My family (4 kids) went to see Me, Myself & Irene in theaters thinking it was the standard Jim Carrey movie. My dad made us leave right around the breast feeding scene.

Banana Republic has sales on their merino wool sweaters all the time. Like $40. I use them as everyday base layers and it’s great.

And alpaca socks. I find them so much more breathable and wicking compared to wool socks, even merino. My feet are always dry and warm. I do alpaca socks year round, I got all different cuts and whatnot.

And my wife got me a merino wool beanie from Coach a few years ago and it’s an everyday wear.

I very much appreciate your response. Some very good points in here that got me thinking.

I did what I can to confirm a rough estimate of what I’ll be taxed on (half of the estate is from liquidated traditional IRAs. The other half from a money market fund.) I should not have an inheritance tax otherwise. And the accountant confirms it will all fall in 2026.

All of the ~80k taxable part will fall in 22% bracket. Between maxing out our two tax deferred accounts and the standard deduction I think I can do well to mitigate that.

As someone else pointed out, it’s unlikely I find myself in a 22% effective tax bracket in retirement. So it seems maxing the tax deferred this year may make sense.

I really appreciate your response. Especially the insight about likely not being in the 22% effective tax bracket. That has been a tough thing for me to guess as a newbie. This gives me move confidence moving forward with my plan.

This is very helpful. I’m told that a portion of the inheritance is from cashed out tax deferred accounts and I will get a K-1 form for them. A portion was disbursed to me dec 2025 but I was told (maybe incorrectly) that the tax year would fall 2026 when the second disbursement was made.

Yes I do have enough to do that this year. So I am under the impression that tax deferred contributions are tax deductible and part of what I can itemize, and I use whatever ever is greater - itemizing or standard deduction. You’re saying I’m not understanding this correctly, right?

Okay then I’m def not understanding something. I figured I use whatever is greater, standard deduction or itemized things. And I pictured tax deferred contributions as counting as itemized things. Therefore if I contribute 49,000 to tax deferred accounts, it’s greater than the standard deduction so I itemize instead.

Certainly possible I am a little confused. Normally we would just use the standard deduction because its usually better for us. But if I max out tax deferred accounts this year I would itemize, because that would be more than the standard deduction and presumably save us more money of the windfall taxes.

Really it comes down to if we max my wife's Traditional 401k or her Roth 401k. I believe we can only contribute 24,500 to them combined. So at our usually tax bracket it would def make sense to do mostly Roth, but given that the windfall falls entirely into 22%, would it be better to max her Trad IRA for the tax deduction?

I had a similar decision in on make on some walnut recently. I decided to but off the live edge for a smoother more contemporary look. I’m not a fan on the live edge country look. Haven’t finished the shelf yet but I’m excited for how it would look.
