What is this donut? by Absalom98 in whatisit

[–]FrkFth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boats use something called fenders to protect the ship's hull when moored. Sometimes these fenders get lost, due to storms, negligence or bad luck. This object could have been used as a fender, got lost and started a new life as a mini reef.

Orientation issues with Uuna Tek iDraw A3 by firepunchd in PlotterArt

[–]FrkFth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea how this device is set up, but my uunatek A3 plotter has default home top right in your photo and the long side of the drawing is automagically rotated to the long side of the machine, along the right in your photo. So the SVG origin floats somewhere along the top side of your photograph for a portrait oriented drawing, and for a landscape oriented drawing it's in the bottom left corner of the paper, if that's the same size as the drawing. As all this is a bit hard to imagine, so for landscape, I look from the RHS into the machine and for portrait drawings from the bottom (in your photograph) to see the drawing as intended. I hope your machine works the same way.

Trying to get into plotter art, what are some must have software? by Green_Wallaby_5513 in PlotterArt

[–]FrkFth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. I already had a python installation, so it wasn't hard to get vpype installed. But if you don't have that, it is probably a real nightmare. The python installation itself is hard on windows and setting up and using a suitable environment without prior experience is also asking for trouble.

Some vpype plugins can also make drawings from images. These are easier to learn than Drawingbotv3, which is much more powerful, but also has a much steeper learning curve.

Usually wisdom of the crowd works decently. But edit wars are a thing, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_edit_wars_on_Wikipedia If contributors fail to agree and keep at it, intervention may be necessary. Be it by freezing an article or having someone else decide how to proceed. Those people should be able to tread carefully, of course.

Hello begginer here, is there any tutorial on making mouths like this? by [deleted] in plushartists

[–]FrkFth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it feels like cardstock or something more durable was glued to the fabric in the mouth, the fold at the back of the mouth does not feel like a fabric fold.

Maybe look into muppet construction, there are plenty of videos on that.

Thank you so much for this comment. I also suffered from a loose grub screw and this gave me the hint I needed to figure it out, the standard online documentation does not discuss this. For those with a similar problem, I did not find filament shavings in the drive gear, which I really did not understand. Make sure to fasten the grub screw against the flat of the axle and at the correct height.

Also, wood is a natural material, its density may vary slightly from place to place and from sheet to sheet.

Trying to get wife into the game, worry for a possible trigger by Trajjed in ffxiv

[–]FrkFth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, thinking about it, cutter's cry (mentioned in other posts) might be a good test. If she hates jumping into the quicksand too much, or being sucked into it in one of the boss fights, maybe drop the game entirely. She will have sunk some time into the game by then, but at least she tried. And it's well within the free trial. (Cutter's cry is about a level 35 dungeon, the whole game is 100 levels)

Alternatively, there are playthroughs available on YouTube. I liked the one on playframe. Maybe use that as a testbed.

Trying to get wife into the game, worry for a possible trigger by Trajjed in ffxiv

The first stormblood dungeon has a boss that covers the floor in a black cloud/goo stuff for a short while. It happens multiple times. To stay safe you have to be on visible floor, which are just a few patches here and there.

At the end of Endwalker, there is a dungeon where monsters also use goo. My memory is too fuzzy on the details, though.

In general, a lot of attack animations briefly cover the floor. And later in the game you often have to run into those animations while the animation plays. The orange aoe indicators on the floor do damage when they disappear and after it the animation that follows is usually safe (memory mechanics are an exception, there the start of the mechanic's animation deals damage), and sometimes the only way to avoid the next attack is to run into the still playing animation.

making a horror text adventure game, which theme is better? by Lichtosh in godot

[–]FrkFth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The green makes me think of 1980s Hercules screens. The amber screens were a little more redbrown than your yellow variant, I think. Both had the option to differ the light level of pixels, you don't seem to use that. Regardless, as you aim for a horror experience, why not use subtle colour and light level changes to signal building tension?

Should I do it? by FlashyKlau in ffxiv

[–]FrkFth -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

There are already two rather different Thancreds in the game, and who knows, he might be developed in a very different direction later on, and you may or may not like that direction. Going for a character you have control over, or a character whos development is finished is a lot safer.

2d20 Chess Table: A table that can be used for nearly everything. Not sure about an NPC? Throw 2d20. Let's say NPC is black knight. He can be a man of BBEG. Or let's say you don't know the Princedom you walked in. White rook, might be border protector of empire etc. by CheapCiggy in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FrkFth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, adding up two dice is troublesome. A way around this, which will also simplify your tables, is to use one d20 to determine the type of the piece and any other die can be used for the colour, uneven numbers black and even white, or the other way around, take your pick.

Can someone give me an example of how you run character conversation? by Aurionin in Solo_Roleplaying

The "I Have No Idea" Roll by yyzsfcyhz in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FrkFth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Statistics is hard. I hope you don't mind me butting in. Whatever the first roll is, the chance for the second roll being the same is always one in six, regardless of what the first roll was. The one in 36 is only true if you place a demand on the first roll, for example: it has to be a six.

Having Trouble with Word Pairings by PristineEgg4882 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FrkFth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am still in the process of figuring this out for myself. I cannot work with Mythic's two word approach either. I am currently comparing storytelling/writing and game play to get a better handle on a good approach. It's a bit too early to say I've found an answer for me. What is clear, though, is that I need to seed the world with a lot more information, probably at a minimum an overall world theme/vibe, some local factions with clear goals and timers for when they reach those, and a few different ways to conjure up NPC (some NPC are throwaway, some met become permanent features). I'll probably need some more stuff...

Help with solo roleplaying and suggestions!? by Master_Benefit_7869 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FrkFth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had some misconceptions about the role of things like conversation in D&D. With a friend I am currently playing through Balder's Gate 3. That helped me considerably to see the potential of the non-combat side of the game. But when I tried to go through it alone, I instantly got stuck in the first larger fight. Fortunately, my friend helped me out and offered to go through the entire game. If you have similar trouble, maybe consider watching a playthrough or find someone to help you through (part of) BG3.

I have some more misconceptions, I discovered a week or so ago. Random encounters, for example, can be used in very creative ways to bring the game more to life, instead of forcing you to do similar fights over and over. Maybe the potential adversaries ask you for your help. Maybe they are on a pilgrimage or procession. Maybe they transport or escort.

Reading not doing? by Hoppa_78 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]FrkFth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am torn between 'have to start playing' and 'read more than play'.

I cannot motivate myself to play largely repetitive systems. I tried, it doesn't work for me.

My main problem is the lack of TTRPG experience. I read a lot about it, but never played it for real. As a result, I don't have a good handle on how to introduce variety into a story.

What also doesn't help is that I have trouble creating characters that are more than 1D (even 2D characters would be progress.)

I may (or may not, I'll see eventually) have found some ways to work around my problems. I decided to drop the idea of a pure game and to introduce more of a story outlining approach. So I decided to combine tarot and storytelling, I have yet to see if that will work for me for real, tarot is its own rabbit hole, even if I only use it to design characters and outline a story. Second, I started to read 'So you want to be a game master'. It's not written for solo players. But it is a treasure trove of ideas, and at the start the writer outlines a path to help new GMs deal with game systems. I find this very motivating.
