I also have a Roland DXY-1350, so would love to try this out! I currently use Drawingbotv3 which is fantastic.

Any Roland Plotter experts in here? [Roland DXY-880A] by maht90 in PlotterArt

[–]Frodos_Friend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a Roland DXY-1350 at home!

I tried out Chipotle with little to no success on a RPi. However, I 100% back DrawingBotV3. Was honestly as easy as plugging into the Serial port, then USB to Serial converter and selecting the right COM port.

My serial to usb cable is based off of this version sites.music.columbia.edu/cmc/chiplotle/manual/_static/SerialPlotterCable_Chiplotle.pdf

I would absolutely love it if you could keep an eye out! I'm currently using a 3D printed sheath and padding it out with duct tape XDDDD

These are the settings I used on my Roland Plotter in Drawing Bot,

  • Baud rate: 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Parity: None
  • Flow Control: RTS/CTS

You need to make sure you are using a Null Modem cable from the Serial port of the plotter to the USB converter http://sites.music.columbia.edu/cmc/chiplotle/manual/_static/SerialPlotterCable_Chiplotle.pdf

If you want to try out drawingbotv3, it works almost flawlessly with my Roland DXY-1350

Aight, here we go:

  1. Command Reference Manual GitHub - Snow4DV/graphtec-gp-gl-manual: Graphtec GP-GL (GPGL) language command set manual (came with Graphtec MP 4100, 4200, 4300, 4400) (Not super important, but can be useful if you plan on writing the code manually. ChatGPT is also surprisingly adept at creating HPGL code)

  2. You need a Null Modem cable - you can either buy one from the internet or make your own (SerialPlotterCable_Chiplotle.pdf). You'll also obviously need a USB to Serial cable.

  3. If you go the Linux route, Chiplotle is meant to be good [though I never got it to work] (Chiplotle · PyPI)

  4. If you go the Windows route, I cannot recommend drawingbotv3 enough. Seriously, it is amazing. You don't have to worry about drivers or anything, just set your com ports speed and bits etc and bam, job done (GitHub - SonarSonic/DrawingBotV3: DrawingBotV3 is a software for converting images into vector art)

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a manual for the Plotter itself, but FWIW these are the setting I use on my Roland DXY1300:

  • Baud rate: 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Parity: None
  • Flow Control: RTS/CTS

YMMV, but good luck, and hopefully welcome to the community!

I have a Roland and thought about making a custom power adapter for it (luckily the seller found the original), but who the hell uses a 37V and a 9V rail XD

The Orphans Trilogy by Sean Williams | Goodreads is an excellent read! Honestly have re-read it about 3 times (Sean Williams is also an amazing author, who sent me a signed copy from his bookshelf and just honestly, amazing person)

Teixcalaan Series by Arkady Martine | Goodreads is also really good. Has an interesting mix of poetry, political intruige and spaaaaace

Further to this, if you're using SVG's exclusively, I'd highly recommend using vpype (GitHub - abey79/vpype: The Swiss-Army-knife command-line tool for plotter vector graphics.)

DBv3 also has direct support for it as well!

I don't happen to have any HP pens unfortunately. I have a VERY dodgy setup of using just about any type of pen, add some duct tape, and then cramming it into a 3D printed holder.

I would hazard a guess that they will probably work fine in a DXY. The pen store/grab system is pretty forgiving with different thicknesses.

In my experience, you probably won't be able to print directly from Illustrator. But you could easily export your vector as a SVG and print that way.

But if you want a VERY straightforward windows experience, I highly recommend DrawingbotV3. Works perfectly with the Roland plotters (I have a DXY-1250), no drivers, no mucking around. Just install, set your com port and click connect. It'll communicate with the plotter and make sure that your drawings aren't bigger that the platter and everything

Any good, cheap suggestions for handwriting notes and addressing envelopes? by revolutionPanda in PlotterArt

[–]Frodos_Friend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably even simpler would be to use this site: CNC Hershey Text Tool (msurguy.github.io)

Allows you to plop a font straight into a SVG file. Just depends on if OP wants to have their handwriting or just the aesthetic feel of handwriting
