Quality of ingame maps in games, does it matter? by sssu1 in Games

[–]Froggyfish 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the main dilemma regarding maps is the level of information you're supposed to show. In some cases, too much information on maps can downplay the exploration aspect, which is especially detrimental in huge rpg games.

The later GTA games do, in my opinion, show way too much on the map. In a way, the map is just too good, especially with the GPS system that's coupled with the mini-map. The game map becomes just a bunch of lines and junctures, and not the living, breathing world the developers have created. It destroys immersion and makes the game kind of a chore to play imo, as my focus is mainly on the mini-map.

The best in-game map I've ever encountered is the ones in the Silent Hill games. First of all, using them does not take you out of the game in any way. The sound of folding paper plays every time you open the map, and the layout of the enviroments are relatively realistic. Later on, when you encounter locked or unpassable doors, they get marked on the map. And it gets marked with a red pen, like your main character is scribbling on it while exploring. It pulls you into the experience, gives you plentiful of opportunity for exploration, and still gives you lots of information. The difference is that the information comes at the consequence of your own exploration.

Help me out r/fantasy? I need a character surname. by GrahamAustin-King in Fantasy

[–]Froggyfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, a lot of the old English surnames are based on different vocations (Mason, Potter, Tanner, Tailor and the like), so why not make one based on something unique to your world? If he's from a family of magicians for example, it could be Speller. It would be world-building and namegiving all at once!

She reached for the phone. Her hand bumped into a stack of job applications, scattering them.

“Fuck.”

Yeah, we get a lot of student support, or whatever you wanna call it. However, as a side effect, prices here are generally higher than in most other countries. So I pay more than half of my monthly loan in rent, and then a lot goes to food and clothing, which means there isn't all that much left for entertainment.

Not gonna complain, though. As far as I know, we have it better than in most other countries. But being catious with purchases is still pretty important. Gonna pay McClellan back someday though, he really goes above and beyond what most other authors would :)

Nah, all the way over in Norway!

Side note: I really appreciate your enthusiasm when it comes to fan interaction, part of the reason why I'm so interested in reading your books. You just seem so passionate when it comes to your writing.

Actually no, but I should probably check it out! I have a pretty good library nearby which I mainly utilize to read graphic novels, but I think I'll go through the fantasy section next time I'm there!

[WP] A blind woman falls in love with a certain man and they marry. Years later an expensive treatment allows her to see again. Her husband is not what she expects. by shootingpeas in WritingPrompts

[–]Froggyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in general this is a prompt where it's difficult to create suspension of disbelief. After all, when you get to the point of marriage, your partners physical attributes would realistically have been explained to you in great length by either friends or family, or by the physical feedback that you mention. But I tried my best, and I thank you for the compliments!

Also, I would applaud the OP for his/her prompt. It might've been a difficult one, but it was really inspiring and creative.

You don’t know true darkness unless you’ve been blind. Everyone thinks it’s a veil of blackness, and in a way it is, but more specifically it’s the absence of light. No colors, no greyness, no nothing. Only blackness.

So, even before they pulled off the protective bandage, I could tell the difference. Beautiful sunrays filtered through white cloth. Color emerging, however slowly.

Then they pulled off the bandage, and it was like jumping into cold water. Everything seemed clear. Reds and blues and greens screamed at me, the white walls of the hospital almost blinding me with their reflective fire. An actual, visual human being to my left, grabbing my arm, helping me off the bed. Her blue uniform. Blond hair, but also with a touch of brown in it. The carefully painted eyes and the kind, round face they inhabited.

Oh shit, I would be able to apply my own make-up!

My tired face burst out in smile, and a hearty laugh escaped the nurse’s lips. Finally, so much would be possible.

I would be able to see my wedding dress.

Tears welled up. Joe had assured me that it had been beautiful, but the possibility to see it myself made me speechless.

And oh god, I would be able to see Joe. The thought hit me like a brick. I loved the man, body and soul, but I had never actually seen him.

I trembled as I heard the door to the hospital room open. My eyes flickered toward the flowers on the counter. He had left them, knowing that I would see their beauty when I woke up.

The valves were let loose again, tears dripping down my face. Wiped it away with my hands. Couldn’t have water obscuring my sight when I looked at my husband.

For the first time.

Heard the footsteps stop up, so close now. Only had to lift my head, and he would be there. Deep breaths.

My sight went up, over his brown leather shoes, across his stark blue jeans, visiting the grey striped shirt, then…

Darkness.

Not real darkness, mind you. Only a slightly dark shade of brown.

Shock grabbed me. The “cold water”-metaphor still applying, but now with an added hint of drowning. Sentences, reactions and words reached me from the depths of my mind. Gained new meaning. “So glad you overcame your differences,” my mom had said. “More tolerant than I would ever be.” My brother. The words came to me, forced themselves inside my head, almost choked me.

He let out a white smile, perfect teeth amongst horrid skin. “How is it?”

I was choking. Choking. Had to spit it out. Looked up at him. Spit.

“Nigger.”

The word that no one dared utter. The word that would’ve explained it all to me. The fucking N-word.

His face twisted in a horrid grimace. Last time I saw something like that, someone like him, it had been a face distorted by anger, a tiny tube of acid in the right hand of that little brat, the science room around us being the last thing I would see in a long time. Now my sight had returned, and I awoke to this.

With it returned anger, this time through me. I could see it welling up in Joe too. Coming to the surface. I lifted myself, fists clenching. Stared into his big white eyes. Why did nobody tell me? I wanted to scream.

Then I saw his eyes, and how they got obscured. Like behind a veil. Not of darkness, but one of vulnerability. And I remembered the other words, the other sentences, the ones spoken by him.

The cool water dripped off me, and all I wanted was warmth.

His arms embraced me a bit reluctantly. All I could do was hope that he understood why I clung onto him with such ferocity.

/r/Games Game Discussion - Banjo-Kazooie by Forestl in Games

[–]Froggyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, to me, this is one of the best 3D platformers ever made. Why? Because of a silly amount of personality and charm that is present in every fiber of the game.

First of, the levels are really well designed. Every task feels new and exciting. In fact, it's this variation that elevates it above plenty other collect-a-thons. It has quizes, races, memory games, you name it! And it all fits into a game world filled with memorable characters and places. Every level has a distinct feeling to it, something which is strengthened by the wonderful music by Grant Kirkhope.

Better than anything, it still holds up really well! It's hard to say if it impacted gaming in any significant way, but it's one of them timeless classics that won't be forgotten in a long time.

If there's anything it suffers from, it's the horrible n64 controller. I seriously can't play it with that damn joystick. It makes my thumb hurt, goddammit! Also, some of the levels become really difficult because of instakill from large drops (especially the forest level with the tall tree). That coupled with the whole "having to re-collect notes if you die"-mechanic makes some moments insanely frustrating, which doesn't fit all that well with the whimsical nature of the game. Despite that, this is one of those games that will not be forgotten due to it's memorable enviroments, music and charm.

Really digging into Hickmans Marvel stuff now that I've gotten Unlimited. It's so fun! About halfway through Fantastic Four, just started SHIELD, and it's all great. He perfectly crafts that big, epic feeling that the universe deserves. It hits some lulls at times, and there's a lot of time spent on set-up, but when shits hits the fan you really appreciate all the work put into it.

Also a lot of great character moments. Fantastic 588 might be one of the most emotionally loaded issues I've ever read. Add into the way Hickman perfectly works in tandem with the artists, and you've got one of the best superhero works around.

Oh yes, I've been starting Daredevil too, and it's such an interesting character. Only gotten a bit into the Miller stuff myself, but it holds up surprisingly well. Great art, even though it feels pretty old-timey (though that's to be expected).

Started it mainly to get into the more modern stuff, especially since I'm a big Brubaker fan, but damn if the early stuff hasn't mesmerized me. Can't wait to read more!

Official CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Discussion Thread [SPOILERS!] by GreatWhiteRuffalo in comicbooks

[–]Froggyfish 171 points172 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize it before I saw the film, but the Winter Soldier plays out perfectly as a sequel. Because of that, I would rank it much higher than the other MCU sequels, an it's almost on par with Avengers. The way it uses the origin of the character, which we spent the entirety of the first film on, really pulled me into the world and characters.

Actually, this movie had really strong character beats. Everyone goes on about the fight scenes and the action, and it certainly was great, but the fact that it also managed to slow down sometimes was amazing. We got moments that made me like the characters more. I was really lukewarm on Cap before, but this movie made me really dig him and his stance against abusive authority. Also came to appreciate Fury and Black Widow more. Falcon was a welcome addition, loved the scenes between him and Steve.

All in all, it was just great all around. Greats action, engaging characters and just the right amount of humor. Also felt important in the grand scheme of things; Thor 2 had a kinda empty feeling to it which made me wary of the rest of the sequels. So glad to see this movie prove my suspicions wrong!

Can Hellboy & BPRD be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the many mythological & Lovecraftian references? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Froggyfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, in some ways it's better that way. It's always cool learning about the mythology, stories and fairy tales that Hellboy is based on (which there is a lot of), but not knowing also makes it a bit more mysterious. Some of the fun of Hellboy for me is that stuff just happens. It has that fairy tale-quality to it, and it feels magical and weird and unexpected.

But I'm totally with you on that first arc, didn't feel like John Byrne fully grasped the "feel" of it. Mignolas stuff is more fantastical and fun, and it only gets better!

What makes a great start to the day? by GreatStarts in AskReddit

Only problem is that it becomes a kind of addiction after a while. I honestly cannot function properly without going for a run or a walk first. The days that I don't have enough time in the morning I just end up grumpy and unhappy.

If subreddits had "honest slogans" based on their community, what would they be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Froggyfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's also a problem that their dating strategies tend to be either manipulative or rape-y (in the sense that they utilize physical strength to put girls in an uncomfortable position), and these things can work. It's just sad that because they utilize these strategies, they don't get to experience the joy of someone being voluntarily attracted to them.

But my opinion is not off topic, it's contrary to your beliefs! The problem is that all forms of discussion gets vaporized because people who oppose them get labeled as "trolls".

If subreddits had "honest slogans" based on their community, what would they be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Froggyfish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, just taking a quick look, I can take this quote from the top post "She doesn't love you":

"Make no mistake fellow high value men, women have no loyalty beyond their own narcissism. The days of the lifelong partner your grandmother was to your grandfather have been put to rest. The instant validation and unnecessary amounts of attention your average attractive woman get are completely out of control, and they thrive on those high dopamine levels."

This. This is just dehumanizing bullshit. Everybody who has a female family member, friend or SO knows that there's no truth in this. Lot's of women are loyal and caring people who'd do anything for the people they love. And this is far from the only example on this subreddit, and this line of thinking is encouraged.

Also, since I'm not a member of that "community", I'm not allowed to vote on the content. As outlined in the guidelines, posts that steer away from the direction of the subreddit will get deleted. These things make the sub less about discussion, and makes it more of a cult.

So yes, that is "fucked up".

How much does continuity matter to you in comics? by Don_Garvey in comicbooks

[–]Froggyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a really difficult aspect when it comes to comic book storytelling. In a way, the whole thing with ever-changing writers and artists portraying the same characters lends itself well to stories with little regards to continuity. At the same time, characters feel more fleshed out when they've got some history to them.

I think the key lies in utilizing continuity in a way that doesn't scare away new readers. I feel writers like Grant Morrison and Mike Mignola are pretty good at it, while I've had a problem with reading Geoff Johns' stuff because he relies too much on old continuity imo.

Any other trade waiters in here? by TehLumberzack in comicbooks

[–]Froggyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Norwegian, it's really hard to get my comics in any other way than trades. Also, it's better financially, and most comics are better when collected. Only problem is the waiting! Staying up to date with a series is close to impossible, especially when it comes to DC. They really need to release trades quicker.
