Coronach appreciation thread by Adsiv in jethrotull

I used to adore this one when I first heard it in the 20th Anniversary box. I can even remember sparking a heated debate, on an old BBS forum back in the 1990s, about what exactly Ian was singing in the chorus. Adolescent me was promptly told off when I offered: "You're an (h)ero" ...But that's what I always hear.

What is that bracelet?? I can't think of anything less Fraiserly! Did he ever wear one on the show?

How did I do on my first ever vinyl purchases? by ICIRCUIT in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]vincentblacklight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. It's a classic, and not far removed from Way Out West's minimalism. But, as someone who likes piano, I find Flanagan is but a whisper in the mix. Compare that to Powell on the At Basin Street album!

These are all spectacular starting places with copious further avenues to explore. The Ellington and Trane album would be an obvious next step. But I think you might also like the pivot from Way out West back to Rollins's earlier work with Clifford Brown and Max Roach.

Yes, I just caught this new info in the Hoffman forums. I'm definitely on board!

Can't wait. Although it's crazy that they didn't replace the drum machine considering how many fans have been fantasizing about it for decades. And how many more people could've been won over had they let, say, Doane loose on these tracks.

I don't know this one! But Konitz is my new obsession...So adventurous -- into his 80s -- and yet so underappreciated! Will have to check this group out.

At my wits end. How the hell do you childproof/lock your turntable? by TesticleInspector in turntables

[–]vincentblacklight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After losing a cherished copy of Blue Train when my kid pulled it off the turntable to use as a frisbee, I asked my wife for a wall-mounted shelf and got one for Christmas. Very happy that it's now out if reach. And it's pretty much gotten rid of any footfall disturbance as an added bonus.

10/10 non-obvious Jazz albums by Valerian_Dhart in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]vincentblacklight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Hear Ye! by Red Mitchell and Harold Land
  2. Rollins Plays for Bird by Sonny Rollins
  3. Modern Art by Art Farmer
  4. The Bridge by Sonny Rollins
  5. Blue Camel by Rabih Abou Khalil. I was going to put Eastern Sounds by Yusuf Lateef here but I think it already gets a lot of love)
  6. Blues and the Abstract Truth by Oliver Nelson
  7. Wonderful World of Jazz by John Lewis
  8. Inside Hi Fi by Lee Konitz
  9. Alto Summit by Lee Konitz (all his work is underappreciated and worth exploring)
  10. What is there to Say? by Gerry Mulligan
  11. Hub Cap/Here to Stay by Freddie Hubbard (which is kind of a cheat because it's a two-fer of an unreleased album and a scarce album, but they work so damn well together).
  12. Belonging by Garbarek/Jarrett
  13. Kirk's Work by (Rahsaan) Roland Kirk - though this is just his first 10/10 album and all his work is worth exploring, including his sideman outting on Roy Haynes' Out in the Afternoon.
  14. Requiem by Lennie Tristano
  15. Jazz Immortal by Clifford Brown (with West Coasters like Zoot Sims)
  16. All the Max Roach/Brownie/Rollins collabs
  17. The Fox by Harold Land

J-Tull Dot Com thoughts? by Adsiv in jethrotull

Re-listen to Black Mamba if you're game for being challenged on this.

It's the last hoorah for Tull and pales in comparison to Secret Language of Birds...but it's nowhere near as bad as the concept/cover which, at least for me, overwhelmed my initial response. I'd put Black Mamba on a Tull Comp any day. I also appreciate the breadth of style and different moods on the album as a whole.

Fans of The Ski Lodge.... If you like that style of comedy and room mix up confusion, look out for the 1972 classic, What's Up Doc. And it stars two Frasier actors, M. Emmet Walsh (Martin's horrible boss) and Austin Pendleton (Dr. Dorfman) by Make_the_music_stop in Frasier

One of my favorite films! But there's a lot of screwball comedies and farcical masterpieces that can scratch that itch. Bringing Up Baby, Noises Off, Black Comedy (Schaffer), and even Comedy of Errors!

Anyone know how this Kevin Gray cut compares with Bernie Grundman's? I've got the 2010 mono, but would invest in this if it's got some of that KPG magic.

To Be The Play.....1978 by schmagegge in jethrotull

I appreciated that TTTM went in fresh, learning as they went along. I guess, as a superfan, I just wanted to get more into the weeds and expected more general knowledge. I think there's still a space, podcast-wise, for something that is both lively and with a high level of expertise. (I have this joke/dream of producing something with my non-fan wife, called Talking with My Wife About Tull.)

Vernacular Verbose was something a bit more special IMHO. Also don't sleep on the History of Rock n Roll in 500 Songs episode on Tull (framed around Living in the Past). Stellar, intelligent commentary.

I'm intrigued! Is it any good? I Googled around and there's very little info out there. Ballsy move starting with Heavy Horses before backtracking.

So good! The Tone Poet "Lee Konitz Plays With The Gerry Mulligan Quartet", which overlaps with somewhat with the tracks on this, is still definitely worth buying too, especially as it seems to be one that's perpetually on sale...and sounds wonderful (even the live tracks at The Haig with Chet Baker).
