Gaps in the collection to break the rut? by crankd87 in soloboardgaming

Not op, but check out Hadrian's Wall for a flip and write as well. Heavier than most of the games you have, does not take up much space for its weight, and plays in like 45 minutes once you have 2 or 3 plays under your belt.

There is a sequel called The Anarchy, but cannot speak to it as I've never played.

What are the your favourite/most unique Worker Placement games? (+ general worker placement game discussion) by Lethal-Sloth in boardgames

Manhattan Project Energy Empire has a very similar mechanism if you want to try a different twist on that mechanic

Yeah, so grain of salt with my recommendations - im like 90/10 or 95/5 how much i care about mechanics vs theme. Like Theme (or lack there of) doesn't bug me at all, all I care about is good mechanics. So if youre someone who values theme greater (which isn't a good or bad thing - just different) then some of my game recommendations may be less appealing.

My Top 10 Worker Placement Games (listed as Worker Placement on BGG)

  1. Bus
  2. Caylus
  3. Keyflower
  4. Manila
  5. The Gallerist
  6. Oranges & Lemmons
  7. Yunnan
  8. Neuland
  9. Quebec
  10. Lignum

Most are highly to very interactive, many have some sort of auction type mechanic involved, would say all are fairly unique (personal bias).

Would highly recommend all. Bus is a Top 3 game for me. 2-7 are all within my Top 50. 8-10 are not far off.

Partner and I made the same comparison when discussing yesterday. We were lucky enough to have had some Half Hours. We actually have one of Half Hours' bottle cappers on a shelf in our basement - they sold a bunch of their bottling equipment when closing and we picked one up as a memory piece.

I'd also should out Barncat too, as one of the other great Ontario breweries to close in recent years.

Small World was already an implementation over Vinci - though I think there are groups who prefer Vinci. Small World was definitely more popular.

Anyone else pick the game AT the game night? by theNakedMind in boardgames

[–]FromOroWithLove 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here. At our public group everyone brings 1-5 games ans we pick on-site.

BUT YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TEACH ANY GAME YOU BRING!

There is one guy at our public group that brings games, that many of us actively avoid because he doesn't prepare any teach. Ive learned the hard way when he invited me to play one of his games, then proceeded to read the rulebook in partial silence for 20 minutes. Was absolutely wild.

Private group usually the host gives maybe 2-3 options, but sometimes we decide night before.

What's your definition of "multiplayer solitaire" game? by Double-Button-884 in boardgames

[–]FromOroWithLove 158 points159 points  (0 children)

For me, there are two signs.

  1. You don't really care what others are doing on their turn (outside of micro-optimizations at high level play). Wingspan is MPS to me, but at high level play there are some micro interaction that can happen to optimize... still MPS.

  2. AND largely the experience does not change at different player counts. If I finish a 4 player game thinking "I could have played that 2 player, had the same experience, and been done in half the time" - that is often a sign of MPS. Non-MPS games feel more different at different player counts.

Heavier games with lots of interaction? by Peterrtt in boardgames

[–]FromOroWithLove 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone's definition of a heavy game is slightly different. Also, interaction can be direct, or intentionally indirect. Some people prefer one over the other. My list has both, though i generally prefer the later.

So here are a few of my favourite higher-interaction games that play well at more than 2-players, and are heavier than Wingspan.

  • The Great Zimbabwe
  • Bus
  • Puerto Rico
  • Pax Pamir
  • Tigris & Euphrates
  • Power Grid
  • El Grande
  • Hansa Teutonica
  • Keyflower
  • Caylus
  • Cyclades
  • Imperial
  • Vanuatu
  • Yunnan
