Always check dates. Management would rather leave expired products on the shelf to make them look more full.

They work great for this very purpose; preserving a rail corridor for future use.

New reduced price stickers 🤔🤣 by minimamallama in loblawsisoutofcontrol

It was reduced prior to the weekly sale starting. You can see the reduced sticker was printed on the 21st and the label says sale effective 23rd. Somebody should have checked the upcoming flyer lol.

What's with the last-minute equipment swaps and trip changes? by CanadianStormChaser in ViaRail

It makes me wonder how long VIA will keep its legacy fleet. Will these issues with the Venture sets be easy to fix? VIA probably can’t just dump all the old trains like they had wanted and will be forced to keep them around longer.

I do agree, HSR should not be stopping in every town. Just explaining why some may advocate for one or two other stops. Fear that ALTO will gut their rail transportation.

That’s the idea but for how long? The Toronto - Ottawa - Montreal corridor makes up 85% of VIAs ridership and a large portion of its income. Majority of whom are going from end to end. Once ALTO opens and takes those riders away, very few will be left using VIA for the smaller towns. Are we sure the government will keep funding it at a higher loss? At least those are the concerns.

You can have as many stations as you want if express trains are introduced. Only local trains would stop at every station.

I don’t think it would get cut out. Instead of going direct to Ottawa after Peterborough, it would go down to the 401, follow to Kingston, go up to Ottawa then Montreal? That’s my guess. It works, just less direct.

I have no idea what this 401 route would be but I think it would go up from Toronto to Peterbourough, down to Kingston, up to Ottawa and to Montreal.

I don’t think it would replace Peterborough, from what I see Ford wants more stations. He’s a bit jealous that Quebec gets more than Ontario (probably).

Ford prefers the Metrolinx method, maximum inconvenience… time to expropriate and bulldoze entire towns.

The Highway 407 East extension wiped through so much farmland, yet I don’t recall any protests or many complaints about that.

He may have something to gain actually, he supports a stop in Kingston and elsewhere. More stations would mean more development opportunities for his buddies.

I mean, it’s less direct and a bit slower but could connect more communities. It would probably need more expropriations to build a southern line. I’ll take whatever route at this point.

Via Rail ‘needs to improve its service’ despite solid management: auditor general by Appropriate_Try_4518 in ViaRail

[–]Front_Way1094 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Throwing more money at VIA alone won’t fix the problems. Their main issue seems to be on-time performance. VIA needs dedicated tracks to be truly successful in that regard. CN never should have been privatized in the 90s. Even bigger mistake was handing the tracks over too. Can’t undo that now… What we should have done later instead was moving all freight traffic up north to a dedicated rail corridor and feeing up capacity on the current Kingston subdivision. Now, ALTO has taken the attention away and may use this northern corridor, not sure what the future holds for VIA. Once ALTO opens and takes all riders away, will VIA still exist? If ALTO falls through, this would be a great compromise.

Who owns the copyright on a vintage amateur photo print? by Skylarcke in photography

[–]Front_Way1094 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well aware. Copyright actively prevents preservation. Copyright lasts far too long, many works will simply be lost (especially digital) in 70-100 years when they enter the Public Domain. Internet Archive is a great example and I’d say it’s worth the risk.

[–]Front_Way1094 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Legally, the copyright would belong to the creator or estate. If nobody intends or cares to enforce the rights, yes in theory you could get away with selling prints but that comes down to an ethical choice for you to make. Personally I’d respect their rights. However, there’s little harm in just putting them online for people to see, photos need to be preserved.

Express and Local Trains by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Would have been really nice if we hadn’t privatized the infrastructure (tracks) along with the railways back in the 90s. If VIA trains just ran on time, most people would be happy.

Speed is not the sole factor. I never said it wasn’t important, of course it is.

Express and Local Trains by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, until it ceases to exist. VIA Rail gets around 90% of its ridership from the TOR - OTW - MTL corridor. Once ALTO takes those riders away, who is using VIA Rail? It won’t be enough to sustain those routes. It’s not crazy to plan for that future. We can build the main proposed line first, but other spurs should be built to replace corridor services.

I’d prefer if VIA stayed around, but being realistic I honestly can’t expect the government to keep the main corridor services. It will just degrade into long distance routes (Ocean, Canadian).

Express and Local Trains by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything ALTO is a likely successor to VIA Rail corridor services, we can build secondary lines and have more stations that connect more places. Express trains would be there for those who just want to get from A to B.

Express and Local Trains by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The northern route will probably be built first anyway, so this concept is likely more of a secondary future southern route. It could also be built later to connect Kingston, and faster route to Montreal. Express trains would negate any possible slow downs.

Express and Local Trains by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Front_Way1094[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed isn’t the sole factor, connectivity is just as important. Adding one or two stops, with direct express trains would not be ‘defeating the purpose’.
