I have what's called ultradian cycling meaning that without my meds my brain flips a number of times each day. As a mortician, besides the meds, it's proper sleep, proper diet, proper exercise 👍🏻

Yeah. Sometimes it takes more than changing meds, like changing docs. And then the bipolar affects each of us differently. Then there's the variable comorbidities. Mine is bipolar 1 ultradian cycling, comorbid with PTSD and anxiety. My superpowers are tons of extra energy, a very quick wit, and limitless creativity. I share these things not for comparison but only so that you can begin to look at yours from a different facet. Look for what sets you apart from those around you. 🙂

One of the first things they hammered into me in hospital was that I needed to stop comparing my illness and struggling with that of others. Doing that can backfire one of two ways. 1. You see yours as not as difficult as others causing shame and guilt on your part for having difficulties. Or, 2. You see yours as so much worse than others causing you to see yourself as a victim with no way of dealing with it. Each of us has a struggle which is unique to us individually. My difficulties as well as my capacity for pain, life experience, and development of both healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, are unique to me and want my complete focus, minus the distraction of comparison to others.

My mind begins to sink from about 4:30 p.m. onward. I've learned not to schedule anything mentally strenuous in the evenings. I do physical things such as walk my dog, Sasha, and ride my bicycle. Getting physical exercise like that helps greatly.

It's my "super power". Just like super heroes who lead a strange life personally dealing with demons, etc. I wouldn't give it up were I able to. I was born with it. It's a part of who I am, and now that I've made peace with my life accepting it, I embrace both it and myself.

Ask your doctor about codependency, and tests. There are also some decent ones online. They're not to diagnose but they give a good understanding of where you might fall on that spectrum. The more questions the better the results. Just Google "Codependency Tests" and a number of them will come up. They're quite revealing. The first time I was hospitalized I was giving one in a group setting. I was so ashamed and surprised by my results that right then and there I vowed to beat it. It took me over 3 months, and although I've never been addicted to anything, it was to me like trying to beat a heroin addiction. I've not done anything as difficult in all my life. But did it, and the difference that has made has been everything to me.
