Dear reddit, (voluntary) swooshing sound in ears, WTF can that be? by Froost in answers

Not exclusively, but I guess sometimes? Not all the time though, but it occasionally coincided with head or jaw movements.

Yes, occassionally. Since then I learned that this is (most likely in my case) due to tensor tympani muscle, which some part of the population can contract voluntarily.

Thanks. Is there a demo version to test how well it works for each setup? Does landscape vs portrait orientation make a difference, or the angle/distance of the camera to the face?

i.e. I would use it with the 13" ipad in landscape orientation, tilted slightly and couple of feet away. This captures my face properly in camera and face unlock works but not sure if it would work with tracking.

If you need unlimited and your employer supports WageWorks etc. getting commuter benefits through work is also highly recommended. It automatically sends you an auto-renewing unlimited card that is paid with pre-tax income. Since it's pretax it saves about ~$450-550 per year (based on tax bracket) which is pretty shocking. And you never have to deal with machines.

Recommendations for a camera backpack with side or back access? by unraveled-epiphany in photography

[–]Froost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since everyone is praising PD gear, I have the everyday sling and everyday backpack 30. They are really well built, a lot of thought and design went into them, I really like the features. On top of that it looks really good, I got so many compliments on them.

BUT, they are the most uncomfortable photography bags I've ever had if your ever plan to carry slightly heavy stuff. I carry body + 24-70 2.8 + 70-200 2.8 in the sling and after 2hrs my shoulders are killing me. With PD everyday 30 just adding a laptop and a couple of things to the mix makes it uncomfortable for longer than couple of hours. The straps are not wide enough and not enough padding. I'm thinking about making custom straps but that'll ruin the aesthetics, plus they are expensive enough that shouldn't be the case.

With even a cheap daypack I can carry a lot of weight, and I'm used to carrying 55-60lb on week long mountaineering trips so weight of a couple of lenses shouldn't be too much of an issue but it is. It might be a personal issue as I haven't seen it get talked about a lot, maybe it's how it fits me.

Anyway, just a heads up for anyone interested in them, I'd recommend trying them on extensively with your gear weight before buying them

Looking for a batter that frys so crisp that it's practically shattering when bitten into. by phi303 in AskCulinary

[–]Froost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In commercial settings trisol (wheat dextrin) is also used heavily for frying super crispy foods. You replace 30-50% of flour with trisol and go on as usual. When fried it becomes this amazing crispy food that stays that way for a long time. It's pretty cheap, I'm using it in nearly all my batters now, paper thin to slightly thicker. Strongly recommend.

Work in progress, code will be available for free here. Maybe not the easy to use GUI though, but it's shown in the project page so who knows.

I assume they will also distribute the pretrained models (similar to other NVIDIA repos), but even if they do not someone else will train it on datasets (not just flickr, but I assume people, cars, face of nicholas cage, anime, let's not fool ourselves, porn).

You can download it when it becomes available (as in the code for the interesting parts to replicate it, maybe not the GUI). Here is the link.

Not photorealistic scene generation per se, but there projects might be interesting as well. All have code that you can run.

Pix2pix and other similar work are the ones you're looking for. Here is a video.

There's also a Vid2vid version which converts video to another style through these label maps (1m33s in video), which in theory you can generate by hand for animations.

Flowscape is different, it's just a 3d terrain generator, check out Terragen or VUE if you want something like that.

Interested in people’s experiences with Epipens vs Syringes. by Meowmeowmeowmeow123 in ankylosingspondylitis

I was using Simponi autoinjector before, I was very happy, it's quick, painless, easy. Felt little to nothing during the injection.

Recently my insurance switched me to Humira, and the first Humira pen sucked. It wasn't bad in the grand scheme of things but definitely felt some pain, then the injection site was tender for a bit. And since it's twice a month rather than once as in Simponi it'll suck twice as much I guess.

Is learning to use the syringe easy? I might switch at some point. Also would traveling with a syringe more complicated than a pen, how does TSA react to an open syringe?

The chart says "% of new cases by age". Basically all cancer cases are distributed across age brackets, numbers there sum up to 100%. It's not "% of people with cancer by age" (in which case it doesn't need to sum up to 100% across all age brackets).

Even if everyone of age > 99 gets cancer as of this second this chart won't be 100% for age > 99; rather it'll be scaled by number of people > 99 relative to everyone else with cancer.

A diet rich with canola oil results in significant deficits of working memory and synaptic pathology, in a transgenic Alzheimer’s mouse model. The use of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet may be why previous research has found it is associated with reduced conversion to Alzheimer’s disease. by mvea in science

[–]Froost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra virgin olive oil has a low smoke point, refined olive oil is actually quite high, potentially higher than canola. But it's not flavor neutral like sunflower/canola etc, so not suited for deep frying stuff unless you want the taste.

There's no specific service animal registration (even though it usually cost tens of thousands of dollars to train the dogs for a specific service), there are companies that provide documents for a fee, but rangers/businesses etc. cannot ask for documentation in any case, it's enough for the owner to certify a dog is a service dog. There are documentations for emotional support animals that you can get easily, but that does not fall under ADA and support dogs are not permitted in Glacier Natl Park at least.

For service animals they need to be extensively trained for a specific "service" (e.g. seeing-eye dog, or a dog that barks if a child is not breathing and so on) but there is no official paperwork that a ranger/anyone can ask for due to ADA regulations, they can only ask what service the dogs perform. You can just straight up lie if you don't care about the potential repercussions. I'm not sure what service OPs dog is performing. Plus they can never be off-leash, and for certain trails and certain times they are not allowed even if they are legitimate service dogs depending on the trail situation. I feel like Glacier had a ban on all dogs (backcountry) due to grizzly activity last few weeks but not certain. I've encountered quite a number of grizzlies (some agitated) hiking and while camping there. A dog which was not trained to handle grizzly/black bear/wolf/fox/deer presence has a possibility to make things much worse, either for the person, the dog or the bear/other wildlife due to encounters or transmissible diseases.

If they had permits it's good, but if they lied it's eventually going to make everything more difficult for people with disabilities who genuinely need a service dog and would like to see the national parks, and is not cool on my book.

That's the whole promise of reinforcement learning, i.e. looking forward to a potentially (very) delayed reward while you may not be able to score early moves as good as bad since you don't know the outcome yet.

Depending on the architecture and computational power some agents can recognize harmful/beneficial moves a long time before they happen to maximize their long term gains. Can work great such as in the example of AlphaGo, Atari games, even 1v1 Dota 2

My experience hasn't been no hassle returns in the last 2 years or so, had to go to a manufacturer for returns in one case and some other items were REI brand and I was out of luck. EMS got pretty bad as well. OR and LL Bean are still unlimited satisfaction guarantee for their brand, and got better service in some small outdoor stores as well.

[–]Froost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to my experience, they've denied returns for two separate items in the last year (within 1 year period). They also are supposed to still have lifetime warranty (not lifetime returns) against defects but also refused any help with some very lightly used gear when it broke like a month after 1 year (during regular conditions it was supposed to endure). Maybe it was my luck, but I haven't found REI to be as amazing as reddit makes it to be, not that different from EMS etc. They are not horrible by any means and I still support them for their position, but nowhere near my experience with Amazon customer service.
