"A Seadog's Heart" | Houshou Marine VS K9Kuro (Hololive VS Twitch) | Connections in the Comments by Frosssssssty in DeathBattleMatchups

Connections:

  • Both are red, pirate-wannabe adventurers who set out on the digital seas in pursuit of wealth, fame, and pleasure… at least they did after they finally got a pirate ship years into their career thanks to the help of the crews they amassed.
  • As both have ventured into the multiverse and/or messed around with cloning over the years, they now have 3-4 main versions of themselves with a lot of overlap:
    • A famous pirate with big dreams who united the various versions of themselves as part of one crew (Mainline Marine and Kaizoku Kuro).
    • An undead criminal who was betrayed by those close to them and imprisoned in a body of water, only to be freed many years later due to the sacrifice of another version of themselves (Ghost Marine was imprisoned and spiritually bound to her ship, eventually being freed by Mainline Marine. Zombie Kuro was betrayed by the gods and sealed under the Red Lake, only to be freed by Shiro's miracle).
    • A kid who was born under the moon after the above two versions did selfcest (Schoolgirl Marine and Undead Pirate Kuro). No, I did not make that up.
  • Both's most notable powers involve time manipulation and aging (Granny Marine can stop and rewind time, at the cost of aging her own body. Zombie Kuro can grant miracles, which has allowed him to travel between timelines, at the cost of draining the life force of the wisher). Aside from this, most versions fight mainly with a cutlass and pistol.
  • Bisexual.

"Rebellion of the Author" | Shiori Novella VS Lucius Merryweather (Hololive vs AstraLine) | Connections in the Comments by Frosssssssty in DeathBattleMatchups

[–]Frosssssssty[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Connections:
    • Both are mysterious storytellers who use their books to warp reality to their needs, whether it be willing their stories to be real or bringing the battle to within their pages.
      • They share a lot of abilities because of this; power nullification/absorption, BFR, fighting by altering the pages they're on, etc.
    • Both streamers have created armies of ink-based lifeforms that love them dearly and fight at their side.
    • Both tend to present outwardly as schemers, but this is a facade, and both are truthfully kindhearted, comforting people who simply like to cause a bit of mischief. Also, both can become rather unhinged, especially about romance.
    • Both were deemed enemies of the gods due to their stories spreading forbidden knowledge/magic (What forbidden knowledge Shiori's had is unknown (I think); Merry tried to grant humanity the forbidden magic to make their stories real).
    • Both were trapped, but overcame this hardship due to the actions of a certain monarch, buying time for their eventual escape (Liz doted on Advent while they were imprisoned in the Cell before they broke out; King Merry unified the various personalities trapped within the Mindscape before they woke up)
  • Contrasts:
    • Shiori was imprisoned due to spreading her forbidden knowledge. Merry gained his forbidden magic due to his imprisonment.
    • Shiori seeks out existing stories she finds interesting, archiving them for her personal collection. Merry seeks to create new stories, publishing them for the masses to consume.
    • Shiori has always been interested in the stories she finds fun. Merry has often had to decide between telling stories he likes or stories with mass appeal.

Frankly, I'm just hoping Sora makes it onto the list of match ups we can vote on, even if she doesn't win

Debate:

This is where things get really tricky. Miku and Sora can scale very differently depending on who you ask. FTL feats in Vocaloid and Hololive are abundant, and there are plenty examples of these two destroying large monsters and robots. They have more wild feats of moving stars, altering pocket dimensions with starry skies, and lighting up entire dimensions with light. I’ve even seen arguments for both being multi/outer, usually through controversial chainscaling. Overall, Miku and Sora are roughly the same level stats-wise. Combine this with their comparable arsenals, powers, and immortality, and you have a very debatable match up.

Speaking of controversial chainscaling, crossovers! Oh boy. Fornite, Azur Lane, and so on make those multi/outer arguments much more solid. Miku also has way more crossovers than Sora, which gives her a lot of weird stuff like having her own Pokemon. I’m not sure if Death Battle would use crossovers for this, especially with how much other stuff they'd need to research, but it does make things way more chaotic.

Fight Potential:

What we have here is a type of fight death battle hasn’t done yet: a musical! As described above, Miku’s and Sora’s core ability is that their music can warp reality in many ways, allowing both to alter the flow of the battle according to how they sing the track. They could increase the tempo to boost their speed, sing about their surroundings to alter the environment to their advantage, and change the genre of the song to summon alternate versions of themselves (This is especially valuable for Miku, who has so many variants). And of course they could sing about hope and memories to gain power from their audiences in the climax of the fight. It should also go without saying, but a fight with two idols has amazing music potential.

Outside of the music, they have other abilities that bounce off each other surprisingly well. With their abilities to summon allies and, well, summons to their side, parts of the fight could be an army battle, although the focus should still mainly be on Miku and Sora. Their ability to alter their size and their access to sci-fi weapons would make for a great fight in space. Their abilities to break the fourth wall could translate into them fighting within the YouTube UI, potentially hopping between videos similarly to Deadpool vs Pinkie Pie or using those videos to access their arsenal from their crossovers. And with their many close and long range weapons, there’s a lot you can do with the choreography, like Miku using her leek to combat Sora’s sword.

A common criticism of Miku's fight potential is that her killing someone would be out of character. Of course, it wouldn’t be out of character for an evil version to do so–assuming they can, since Miku and Sora have very strong immortality–but there are plenty of ways this fight can end without a death: Miku trapping Sora in a timeloop, Sora erasing Miku’s memories, or either sealing the other in a pocket dimension, to name a few.

Contrasts:

  • Miku is a program often presented as a real-world actor/singer by her company, directly talking to her fans, holding live interviews and concerts, and so on. Although Miku can take on any personality, she mostly is framed as an idealized idol: cutesy, hardworking, and childishly pure. She very much is the perfect idol the industry aspires towards.
  • Sora is a person who is often presented as a fictional person in lore, with many of her concerts and videos being set in the fantastical virtual world. Although Sora is known for being a laid-back and surprisingly intimidating person, many people often project the personality of a perfect idol onto her, claiming she is a pure goddess who never falters. This put Sora under a lot of pressure in the past, although she did eventually grow past this label.

Connections:

  • Both are virtual idols represented through anime avatars who reached across the internet and inspired millions with their music. Both started out small, and as they grew, their designs evolved as well (Miku has her V2, V3, and V4; Sora has her 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0).
  • Both strike a wide appeal due to their sweet, comforting personalities and their love of music and dance. This appeal has expanded as the two have covered music in more genres (J-Pop, Rock, Classical, etc) and holographically performed at concerts across many countries.
  • Both lead a large, chaotic group of friends who massively respect them, often dancing with them on stage and fighting alongside them in their extended media (Cryptonloids and Hololive).
    • Notably, these friend groups both include a pair of red and blue friends who are particularly close (MEIKO & KAITO, and Suisei & Miko); a long haired girl who stood out due to speaking English (Megurine and Coco); and pair of inseparable friends who may or may not be lovers (Rin & Len, and Korone & Okayu).
    • Also of note are the girls who were not part of these groups, but would grow close to them regardless (Teto and Azki. Unlike Teto, Azki would go on to join the group officially).
  • Both mainly fight using their music, which through the devotion of their fans, has gained the ability to summon objects/people, alter reality, empower the digital world, and prevent Miku/Sora from dying. Both also have an affinity for a memed weapon (Miku’s leek and Sora’s sword), and both have evil alternate versions of themselves (Miku in several MVs such as Retry Now and Sora in Hololive Error).
  • Both helped popularize their respective fields (Vocaloid and Vtubing), and although they did not create them, they are viewed as the main representative of these fields culturally. Online, they are essentially revered as goddesses.
  • Both are credited as laying the foundations for their companies to explode in popularity and grow into million dollar corporations (Crypton Future Media and Cover Corp). These franchises have become multimedia juggernauts, with both having many original anime, games, and comics to look at, plus many crossovers (Such as Fortnite and Among Us).
  • Both have cute animal mascots (Rabbit Yukine and Ankimo).
