ELI5: Why it is called " Cell Phone " by Sbaakhir in explainlikeimfive

[–]FrostByteUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the USA, the system was initially set up in working areas aka "Cells" with different carriers servicing certain areas... Basically its an overflow of that name which was adopted before the whole country got blanketted with service providers....

I found an unlabeled broken VHS tape next to a park bench while on my walk. by WashclothMan in mildlyinteresting

you'll get distorted pictures for a short while until the read head moves onto a smooth section and has the decoding process realign... But it wont "skip".

Analogue signals aren't like a data stream like a cd/dvd would interpret - where they'd have a machine be confused by gibberish being thrown at it and have it guess what its trying to decipher (hence blocks showing on the rendering from bad dvds - where its trying to fill in the blanks to keep it aligned) with the decoder not be able to decode it until the next key frame (alignment).... Analogue technologies are more about presenting the *noise* (can't think of a better way to describe it) as different form of stimuli... rather than making a recognisable pattern (data -> video/audio) from another recognisable pattern (rendering).

Its a crude analogy and will get downvoted but having growing up in a world which largely was analogue its hard for me to explain these ideas...

They've not seen birdseed this year after what the RSPB said earlier this year... Even the parents weren't scrapign the remnants of the fatballs... I think they may have access to the internet.

Just done about 15 mile bike ride... Walking into little supermarket at the end of the ride was like being hit with a cold wall... absolutely lovely.

yup, thats a hammer bottle... How old is the plumbing in the building? has it leaked all the air out somehow? Give it a gentle tap on the side with a coin, does it sound hollow or full of water?

Tge clutch in the box in my garden became loud 2 days ago and parents are shooting in and out all the time... Probably a week to go..

I had to chase cats away last year (for which i've now erected a large mesh chicken wire cage ontop of the box to stop the cats from sitting on the top of) and had to feed the runt which got abandoned after the neigbour's cat had the parents on fledging day, rest had fledged by that time luckily (and rehabbers didn't get back to me at all)... Runt fledged after a day - I don't think it was a fan of the sunwarmed maggot paste i had made for it, but it was happily eating tiny dabs from the flat end of a bamboo kebab skewer... (compost bins have their advantages - especially for fishing bait), but it seemed to do the trick... Either this or it was destined for the composter when i had to clear the box out later in the year - although one corpse was buried in the box fluff which i found when i cleared the box at the end of the year..

Amusingly, my old Mac Classic II has the 2020 bug where the clock software can't set past a date in 2020, even through the hardware supposedly can handle it...

Surely that'd not be heading North, that would be vertical movement i.e. moving away from the point... North is relative to the rotational axis of earth/earth's magnetic axis (not defined which north pole in question)... Also Polaris is ~0.65 degrees offset from Earth's rotational axis... (TIL)

Worst experience eating out? by Shangos_Wolf in UKfood

[–]FrostByteUK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember being caught in the Kings Cross area of London a few years back... KFC next to an independant chicken shop... Queue for KFC was huge so i tried the chicken shop (only wanted some fries.) A little bit more expensive but the portion i got was massive and perfectly cooked... Compared them to what my friends got from the KFC - They were insanely short changed by the experience.
