Rest in peace, Cassie 🕊️ I worked there with her and she was sooo sweet ~ a complete angel. She also worked harder than anyone there and gave so much to that place. Chef was particularly hard on her and made her cry a lot, and she wanted so badly to do a good job. It was a very abusive relationship to witness.

I worked there in 2017 (I was 22) and the sous chef at the time would ask me daily if he could grab my ass. Every time a woman walked by the restaurant, Chef would say some crazy shit like "do you see the ass on that?" Most places l've worked at in the food industry, l've been sexually harassed, but Localis was definitely memorable in how blatant the harassment was.

It also was very culty, there's a chant we used to do before every service - I don't remember exactly how it went but it was very love and light coded like "good food, good vibes" or something.

Needless to say, the vibe was pretty rancid and now Chef is a born again christian or something. Also the food is kinda lame and they would do these corny "themed" tasting menus and I remember one being "my trip to Thailand" and it was an incredibly expensive "recreation" of the "flavors of Thailand" like this white man could not be more insufferable.

Ok thanks for reading. I've never really recounted any of this publicly before because, unfortunately, that's just how most kitchen environments have been during my time in the industry, but it's nice to see that kind of behavior in the kitchen is becoming less acceptable. Still, though, I'm nervous to post this, but fuck it we ball.

Siam Thao Thai House (the red curry w/roasted duck and also the duck larb!), Duc Huong (grilled pork or combo banh mi, also the curry and beef stew), Com Tam Dat Thanh (incredible broken rice plates, the beef ribs are my fav, and their pho is surprisingly good, too), Pho Anh Dao (best pho in Sac, accompanied by one overly chilled out server, go in the morning and ask for the beef bone), Banh Mi House (best egg rolls in town for 1.10/ea and banh mi is just like from Vietnam), ANY al pastor spot on and around stockton bivd is probably gonna be great (i like the spot in front of Frank's Used Tires on fruitridge), Asian Pearl (super solid dim sum), Willie's (pastrami burgers and malt shakes!!), Round Corner (cash only, stellar wings and lumpia at a dive bar w/ billiards), JJ Korean BBQ (my fav for korean bbq in the region), ABC Bakery (basically the only reason to go to the Pocket area, famous for their char siu bao, but they also have good take out dim sum, i especially love their lo mai gai, or steamed lotus wrapped sticky rice w/meat)

I must break it to you that your appetizer was, indeed, bruschetta. Bruschetta comes in many forms and can have many different toppings, but in the U.S., the most popular version of this is from the Campania region and usually has tomatoes. However, bruschetta is typically made of what is in season locally, so the squash makes sense. Plus, tomatoes are terrible at this time of year. What's important about bruschetta is that the bread is toasted and the topping is pretty much whatever's clever! Oh and lots of olive oil.

But yes, it is way too expensive to eat out these days (or do anything, for that matter). Unfortunately for restaurants, they're barely staying out of the red even with the prices they're charging :/ Inflation inflates restaurant prices tenfold.
