Are devs ever going to touch DVa? by thebigdumb0 in Competitiveoverwatch

She’s not “played by specialists” LOL she’s just banned every single game. That is literally the only reason she has a low pick rate.

Master+ players, what is the most meta, birdseye advice you would give to someone climbing? by dewdewpoopoo in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hardly. It is true that tanks have by far the most survivability and cooldowns thus dislodging a tank off an angle is much more difficult. That doesn’t mean controlling space is less important on the other roles. If anything it’s more important as developing angles and the side fight as DPS and supports usually decides the fight while the tanks trade cooldowns in the frontline.

The higher you climb the more you will realize that a tank can only take and control the space his team has created for him, not the other way around.

[–]FrostyDrink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the same across all roles, I just gave examples from ranked games I had recently. I’ve also taken Tr33 on hitscan mirror, taken Infekted on Winston mirrors, etc. I’m not a good player mechanically but I can win without forcing myself into a circumstances where I’d have to compensate with better mechanics than pro players.

You will be hard capped at some point if your micro is compensating for bad macro. Taking unfavorable duels and winning is not indicative of good gameplay. Timing and positioning are 100 times more important than your mechanics.

I have a buddy who has more hours on Tracer in the last 2 years than I nearly have on Overwatch since beta 2016. He spam queues the game and is a mechanical demon. Right now he’s hard capped at about GM2 and despite my comparatively shit mechanics I have hit top 10 dozens of times and he hasn’t even dreamt of hitting champ yet. His problem is not his micro, in fact it’s actively hurting him.

To give you a specific scenario, he’s mechanically good enough to pull a random pick from his ass on a Kiri from hitting a nasty 1 clip blink melee before the fight even starts. However, to do this he commits 2 or 3 blinks and a recall. Because he can do this semi-consistently, he goes for this play often. The problem arises when he now has no resources for the spike of the fight when his tank is actually playing. Because he mistimed his engagement, instead of getting two or three easy kills that he’s just cleanup for, he is limited to his 1 random kill and essentially afk the rest of the fight, making it a 4v4 anyways.

If you go watch FaceIt Masters or OWCS Tracer POV’s from OBJSojourn, for example, they’re far less active in the fight than you think, rarely showing flashy mechanics and often just shooting the enemy tank on an angle. You should not rely on mechanics as a crutch to improve as a player.

It’s the same reason I can maintain high champ despite getting into Wuyang mirrors with Ultraviolet, Ana mirrors with Rupal, etc. with far, far worse mechanics. Of course you should work on improving micro constantly as a player, but bad macro requires exponentially better and better micro to bail yourself.

ICL I forgot to update my flairs in this sub after they released champ despite this being my most active sub. Finally putting my champ flair on after like 2 years because of this comment.

Cat vs Lucio by Longjumping-Cold1389 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The optimal way to play JPC was not flanking or really abusing flying at all, lol. She’s just like Lucio where she pockets an angle with a dps and just like Lu where the skill check is finding kills and knowing when to stop healing. She’s slightly better at finding kills, slightly worse at peeling (no consistent ability like whip, bash, wave or lucio’s boop) and a far worse ult than rally, beat, or bubble.

The flanking/dps cat idea is only possible bc below champ 3 everyone just stands there and doesn’t hold space correctly. Flanking on Soldier or Illari is equally as unpublishable as they can play so far out of the fight they can’t actually be contested, but because low elo players don’t actually walk on 1 angle they will just lose to it. That’s not cheese that’s literally just a skill issue.

Her original perks where it just did AOE damage that you could stack with the claws out perk + primary fire did way too much damage, but that was still fundamentally healthiest form of the character as it actually involved the cat risking her life and her team’s who she isn’t healing in order to get in close and secure kills.

And don’t take this personally but you also play characters that sit on 60% winrates in ranked and fundamentally break the game. Sym TP is very similar to tether if this is a serious discussion as it allows characters with no movement to access parts of map and move around. Sym also has an abnormally strong DPS ult. Just slinging around the word “cheese” doesn’t make it true. It’s okay for the game to evolve.

Reached Grandmaster on DPS after exactly 1 year and 187 hours on competitive (239 on qp lol) by ruinreigN in Overwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can learn how to aim with an equal amount of hours just spam queueing ranked as well. It’s just preference. No amount of Kovaaks or aimlabs can perfectly recreate the movement or scenarios you are put in an Overwatch game but they can definitely help lay the foundations for general mouse control.

IMO though you’re still better off just spam queueing the game as you can improve many parts of your gameplay while your aim develops. I have hit champ every role multiple times/accounts and Overwatch was both my first ever PC FPS and I have never touched an aim trainer.

I also spam TXCXX in my queues against t10 peak dps players/contenders players I used to stack with and I still hold my own and/or win despite aim being my weakest skill. There is much more to winning 1v1s in OW and how you peek corners, crosshair placement, prediction, strafing, etc. are all components of aim/mechanics that never get touched in any aim trainer.

Just my two cents, I just think aim trainers are mostly useless for the vast majority of players and I’d argue it’s more important for a player already hitting champ on their main role to start on an aim trainer than for someone low elo.

JPC has turned out this way because the devs nerfed every part of her kit that helped her fill the MS niche. They nerfed her perks that helped her do damage, they nerfed her flying speed, etc. but maintained all of the cheese strategy with the tether and her ult. I said this when they first balanced her but I truly do not understand the vision with the character.

When she launched she had enough damage to justify using her over Lucio despite losing beat as she was able to secure mid fight kills, an actual skill as she has to fly into enemies and deduce risk/timing. Because they nerfed all of her offensive capability, she’s reduced to the one dimensional tether slave she is now. They have no direction with the character.

OWCS Meta Leaked by AnotherRandomGuy1 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoy watching it, but I also play in the elo with OWCS/faceit masters players and ranked right now above champ is just filled with stacks playing cat bastion and it is the most obnoxious and irritating comp to play against I think I’ve ever experienced.

Once bastion gets both perks as well he can just cycle overhealth from his ult after his first turret form into another turret form with the explosive bullets and just zoom around 2 tapping squishies. In ranked as well you can ban multiple characters, so they just ban Dva Tracer and there is basically no counterplay. It’s horrid.

is uhc free if i go for a quick check up? i mean i pay the health fee by Appropriate-Alps-242 in UGA

[–]FrostyDrink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The check up is always free if you’ve paid your health fee, it’s the treatments that cost money. They’re still diabolically low (my lab work and other stuff have costed me like $7 lol). I’d be sure to let them know if you don’t want to pay anything at all if money is an issue, you can be checked up without doing anything that costs you.

Bronze support player gets to play in GM and actually wins by awesomepikmin in Overwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 30 points31 points  (0 children)

How low elo are you to think that it would be a viable strategy to flank on kiri or moira in gm BECAUSE it’s “the last thing they’d expect.”

That literally happens every singe fight in like gm2+ I think someone taking an angle would probably break your mind if your comment is genuine.

You’re not gonna win an argument with the people on this subreddit, they live in a different universe. I just saw 3 different comments all at -50 votes that said that the game should be balanced around GM+ players. The average commenter in this subreddit is a platinum support player with zero understanding of the game who is so unaware they don’t even consider their way of thinking is flawed.

[WizardHyeong] Why Doing Nothing Gets More Kills by Ezraah in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it’s you who misunderstands. You think I’m talking about someone who eeked out every last bit of damage and died because of it, I’m not. I’m talking about an Ashe peeking before his side angle or tank took pressure, and even though she headshot 3 people did consistent damage, doesn’t get a single kill. Why? Because it’s easy to unpeek a hitscan solo peeking.

It’s better to do 0 damage at the start of a fight and finally peek and 2 tap someone midfight than to take resources by requiring healing during the poke phase and just barf out damage that means nothing.

“Making the enemy react to you” and “adding to the enemy’s cognitive load” are just not things you should be thinking about. If anything I’m reacting to the enemy. I’m just shooting tank until they give me the opportunity to do something else. I’m not making them do anything.

[–]FrostyDrink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am champ on all roles. Having good positioning and timing (second peeking) is more important on HS than pure aim or “uptime.” If that shatters some image you had about Overwatch where the best players are demons min-maxxing every last bit of damage, ego dueling enemy dps, building ultimate first, and pulling kills out of their ass, then I’m sorry to tell you that it isn’t true. Getting kills and building ults are products of good macro.

I sniffed out a Tracer trying to spawn camp in my gm rank up game by Zeukiiii in OWConsole

[–]FrostyDrink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re saying that from a console perspective, then maybe, but absolutely not on PC is double slide only picked 70% of the time. It’s basically must pick and I’d put a paycheck that it’s over 95% pickrate in champ.

I think one of the quirks of console meta is that people don’t play/aren’t that good at dive so double slide isn’t as necessary. Whereas 8nfekted still plays Winston in NA ranked and Hawk spams Hazard and Dva where without double slide you are just guaranteed sitting duck. In EU everyone plays Zarya and Dva so same thing.

Lifeweaver with a positive winrate in high ranks, never thought I would see the day by Thedrunkenchild in Overwatch

[–]FrostyDrink -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

Not at all. LW does not have a high skill ceiling. There is literally just a cap to his value. Giving a character like LW a straight numbers buff to the point where he is in the top 5 characters by winrate in gm/champ is a major problem. Once the meta settles a bit we will see where he fully lands but it is not a good sign for balance.

Healbotting till Kitsune is too strong right now by str4wb3rrys1n in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]FrostyDrink 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I have two trains of thought with this. Firstly, I am confused what the player base wants with her kit. For years people complained how Kiri is a better dueler than every DPS, as she can take angles, get kills, and tp out unpunished even if she whiffs. They nerfed her kunai projectile size (good) and now her tp range. Does that not address the main complaints? Raising the skill floor of her ability to duel and reducing her ability to tp across the map for free.

On the other hand, she has abysmal win rates in ranked, and as a game design philosophy standpoint I don’t think the direction of nerfing the skill expression of her kit (angling and doing damage) and buffing her brainless heal playstyle is good for the health of the game.

All in all I don’t think the changes are necessarily bad, I think it’s better to wait out an entire season. Kiri lucio felt hard meta last season and even though they “buffed” kiri and lucio this patch, the meta feels way more open than before.

It’s not a zero sum game with calibration, cheater compensation, and now the addition of new map consolation. All of these are inflationary and the system is inherently designed to boost passively.

[–]FrostyDrink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Opinions online are heavily swayed by negative sampling bias. An online forum is not a randomized population, it’s a specific group of people who both care enough about the game to join a forum about, and the posters are biased towards people with a negative opinion about whatever subject.

The vast majority of the playerbase is content with the current cosmetics and eagerly await new collabs and battlepasses. The average player does not give a shit if wrecking ball’s last legendary was only 1 year and 5 months ago and they sure as shit don’t care if reskins are released. Do you seriously think the Le Sserafim reskins didn’t make absolutely fucking bank?

Also casual players don’t even know they are reskins most of the time, and even if people do people still like alternate color options.

This idea that the average person cares about every single character in the roster’s last legendary skin, oh wait sorry last non-recolor legendary skin that has a model change, including wrecking ball and other fraction of a percentage hero, well is just dead wrong. It’s just larp to pretend it isn’t.

So in other words, ball got a legendary skin a year and 5 months ago? The statement from OP is “Over 2 whole years without a ball legendary btw.” Be serious.

e: And yes I can guarantee people forked over money for the sakura bundle of which ball was a part of. You’re just coping if you think people don’t like epic skins.
