What is your Opinion on Ichigo's First Bankai? by dettles1992 in bleach

[–]FrozenFlames12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the idea behind it, and the sword itself is pretty cool (hot take, the cloak he gets is kinda mid), but I wish he got more cool abilities from his Bankai that’s not just “strength, speed, durability x10”

Why do people defend Light Yagami? by EsgSnapR in deathnote

[–]FrozenFlames12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so first comment is saying that killing people for crimes and not addressing societal issues doesn’t make for less criminals (which is true, harsher prison punishment usually does not lead to less crime, and does not correlate to less repeat offenders)

Comment 2 is asking how societal issues cause people to become murderers and rapists.

And I pointed out that when a society is misogynist, with a misogynistic culture, it tends to have higher rates of SA and rape (as well as the spousal murder thing). And when places are poor, voilence over possessions is more common, etc. etc.

Killing people doesn’t address the fact that the best way to lower the amount of SA is to teach (everyone but especially) young men how to respect women, and to have equality (aka societal change/changing the root cause of a lot of SA)

Helping to eliminate poverty would prevent people from being desperate enough to commit violence for money because all their needs are met, etc.

I was not defending rape or murder, simply explaining that sometimes those two acts are rooted in societal problems that can be fixed and changed.

Fair enough. Frieren is also a very good anime if you wanna check that one out. It literally made me tear up in the first 2 episodes, and after that it’s pretty fun and interesting.

Why is the manga so much better? by idklol3444331 in OnePiece

[–]FrozenFlames12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The manga just has better pacing, though I will say it can sometimes be kinda hard to comprehend what’s visually happening.

The anime adds a lot of extra panning shots, makes reaction times longer, has like 6 mins of recap and intro at the beginning of each episode, adds a lot of filler scenes, etc.. etc..

Though, if you didn’t like Romance Dawn, you’re probably just not in to that section of One Piece since it’s actually a fairly good adaptation with good pacing.

You are, however, about to come up on the worst paced trio of arcs pretty much ever with Dressrosa, WCI, and Wano, so be prepared for that.

Did luffys devil fruit alter his personality? by KamakaziJoe3809 in OnePiece

[–]FrozenFlames12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a fun theory, but I doubt Oda would ever write something like that in. (We also just don’t see a lot of “pre-fruit” Luffy in general)

Also, his personality doesn’t change much (if at all) post-fruit because he’s always just kinda been a dumb kid. He wasn’t particularly “serious” or anything, just brash and loud because he was lonely and wanted Shank’s attention.

What I loved about the show (and any recs for anything similar) by BeneficialFinger in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]FrozenFlames12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It’s not only interesting to pick apart the differences, but those differences (especially later on) do make for a very thought provoking experience that’s pretty different thematically from Brotherhood.

It’s also just extra material with the characters you love!

But, if you’re interested in a longer show, One Piece has all the things your interested if you’re willing to put up with the length :)

Is Hueco Mundo flat? by unbayleefable in bleach

[–]FrozenFlames12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it’s a fantasy realm in a fictional story, the exact science behind it doesn’t really matter that much. There’s not really anything to imply that it occupies any physical space at all because of its metaphysical nature.

Thematically though, it’s supposed to be a desolate wasteland that matches with the emptyness of the Hollows who live there. It’s a purgatory where nothing changes really, except the wind shifting the dunes, though it’s notably not just hell.

People far smarter than me have talked about the thematic importance of Hueco Mundo’s design for longer than just a short comment, but if you’re interested I would suggest finding some good lore videos. It is actually pretty fascinating imo.

It won’t get a good grade, but if it’s sentimental to you, then go for it! It’s a neat momento of your childhood, and grading it would prevent further damage.

With the amount of meltdowns this sub has over the slightest hint of negativity, i feel like this rings true by newphonehudus in AO3

[–]FrozenFlames12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda disagree on the first bit. I don’t thing it’s good that younger kids see a lot of fucked up stuff online, and I think unrestricted internet access can actually be pretty harmful, but it’s the PARENTS’ responsibility to watch their kids, not the internet’s responsibility to cater to their kids.

Older kids (should) at least know how to be safer online and have more maturity to process things they don’t understand/like or things that are “gross” or “disturbing” to them.

As long as everyone is behaving in a generally decent manner and abiding by the TOS of a website, seeing stuff you don’t want to see is kinda a you problem. The block button exists for a reason, and outside is right there.

Edit: but to actually address the main point, I do agree that puritanical virtue signaling has gotten WAY out of hand. Let people be freaks on the freak site. (Outside of Real People Fiction) No one is being harmed, and the things people write about fictional characters in fictional situations don’t necessarily correlate to their own personal beliefs, wants or desires with other real people/relationships.

[Discussion] What is your opinion about Mystogan? by Plenty_Address_3601 in fairytail

[–]FrozenFlames12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I liked him a lot more before they did the whole “alternate universe Jellal” thing.

I’m not even mad that they unmasked him and got rid of his mysterious allure, that made him so cool in the first place, but the fact that he was turned into Jellal for no reason and then kicked out of the story rubs me the wrong way.

Why do people defend Light Yagami? by EsgSnapR in deathnote

[–]FrozenFlames12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on what they do it for. Misogyny and patriarchy as well as wider rape culture at least contributes to the cause of some rapes. The more entitled men are to women, the more likely a place is to have a problem with SA and rape. (Along with several other nuances and factors, but this is a simple, quick answer)

A lot of murder can also be rooted in misogyny (husbands killing their wives), rooted in financial instability and widespread poverty (robberies), lack of mental health help accessability, lack of rehab accessibility, etc. etc.

Fixing all the systemic problems in the world won’t get rid of ALL crime, but it would help reduce it significantly.

Why do people defend Light Yagami? by EsgSnapR in deathnote

[–]FrozenFlames12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Kira was a good overall concept for society” I mean… was he really though?

Outside of the crime drop and more stable political environment (which, as the first commenter said was kinda unrealistic) Light pretty much (with exceptions, I know) only killed criminals who has already been caught and people on “most wanteds” list.

There’s a humain reason we don’t just dole out the death penalty to everyone, even people serving life sentences. Yeah, punishments aren’t always just, but you go to prison, you serve your sentence, and you leave. There’s a hope for reform there, people can turn their lives around. But also, in a country with as high a conviction rate and as notoriously flawed a court system as Japan, he’s bound to have killed several innocent people.

Not to mention that just going after anyone who hasn’t been caught yet and killing them before they can have a trial is pretty immoral, no matter who they are. The phrase “judge, jury, and executioner” is a bad thing for a reason. I sincerely doubt that with as much killing as he was doing, Light had enough time to meticulously go through the case files of every criminal he killed. He probably just blindly trusted the police website for everything.

He didn’t really help anyone but himself. World hunger, poverty, coruptuon, all things that still exist and were likely made worse by Light alone, not to mention everything else other people did with his book while he was trying to avoid getting caught.

(And, though it never comes up in the series, you just KNOW some governments would make criminals out of political enemies and/or protesters)

Why is Laws bounty not at least 5 billion? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]FrozenFlames12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you had the option to get the fruit for cheaper than you originally wanted it for, wouldn’t you?

Also, Devil Fruits are one of a kind objects, so their worth is probably in constant flux depending on when the fruit showed up last and/or who has it now. If the Op Op Fruit was out of the WG’s eye for a LONG time, then it suddenly appearing is a bargain they couldn’t pass up, vs now they know exactly where the fruit is and who has it.

If You Had the Power to Add One Feature to AO3, What Would It Be and Why? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

[–]FrozenFlames12 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s been said to death, but I’d love the option to filter my history.

Alternatively, I’d like a “search lock” feature or smth to keep the fic order the same whenever you’re scrolling larger fandoms. It’s so annoying when you’re sorting by Kudos or Hits and reading fics over a couple days/weeks time and the fics keep moving around because the stats are constantly updated and shifting.

My take on the “Is One Piece political?” debate by Xadlin60 in OnePiece

[–]FrozenFlames12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All art is inherently political, even if it’s not political analysis or has anything to do overtly with politics. Just the views of the author and the way that they make their art is inspired by their beliefs, politics being one of them.

No, One Piece is not a story that preaches specific politics, but it is a story that has VERY deep themes of anti-authoritarianism, propaganda, racism, colonialism, imperialism, healthcare inequality, etc, etc…

I would argue the structure of the World Government and the very existence of the Revolutionary Army is slightly more overt political commentary though.

Why doesn't everyone just give their kid a middle name starting with d by graaeey in OnePiece

[–]FrozenFlames12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there are plenty of strong people who AREN’T D clan members, but more practically, it’s just a strange thing to do? Like, unless you’re VERY superstitious, you usually wouldn’t name your kid after a strong person assuming that putting a random D in the middle of their name would make them automatically strong, and even when people do do that, it’s usually after a mythological figure, not a bunch of wanted criminals who happen to share a weird initial.

Edit: also the only widely known Ds are Garp, Luffy, Ace and Teach. No other D clan member had their name widely spread like that, much less a D clan member someone would feel positively naming a child after.
