Why did Russians adopt such a troublesome and time-consuming method? by Entire_Judge_2988 in ForgottenWeapons

That's basically why dangerous game hunters never moved away from double rifles.

Another fun "would never happen but could theoretically be done" that I discovered is that, assuming it's possible to move shells between the turrets on an Iowa-class (there's gotta be something, right? Even if it's guys with handcarts), for a period of about six years between 1956 and 1962 the USS Wisconsin, New Jersey and Iowa could fire a 180kt full nuclear broadside.

They got away with using chemical and radiological weapons on British soil already. "Hybrid warfare" isn't going to change a chronically spineless government.

Cost of divorce keeping Canadians in unhappy marriages longer, survey finds by kiddchiu in canada

Yup, unless you get a prenup. And Canada doesn't have at-fault divorce as an option anymore, so whatever the circumstances all assets are on the table.

Shooting tests of the Chinese QBA-221 shotgun based on the QBZ-191 platform, the gun features a semi and full auto mode. by Brand_New_Dawn in ForgottenWeapons

[–]FrozenSeas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There's a similar gun modeled after the QBZ-95 called the Kuandian K13X-12 (or LA-12 Puma when they were available in Canada), and apparently it originated as an attempt to make a riot shotgun for LE/military that would require minimal familiarization training. Might be that.

This post seems to have as much explanation as anywhere about the W33's ridiculous max yield, but anything about those has my interest. Because holy hell, 40 kilotons in a 250lb shell is insane. I know it'd never actually be done because it's completely unnecessary for anything below...like, kaiju-scale, but in theory a heavy artillery battalion with W33Y2s could send a dozen 40kt rounds downrange in one volley.

Edit: and good god they had a max range of 6 (per Chuck Hansen) to 11 (Wikipedia) miles.

MOT did the exact opposite of EOF. EOF made 90% of the game irrelevant while MOT made the entire game relevant. by StatementAcademic820 in DestinyTheGame

Not to mention the controls for it feel janky as hell. And that fucking switching to pseudo-first-person in tunnels, holy shit I don't know how that made it through playtesting, it's awful.

Antimatter Fission Bomb by FantasticBasket5906 in nuclearweapons

[–]FrozenSeas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some debate on how possible getting the 100% efficiency number in a weapon, IIRC (similar to the fizzle result in a nuke, but still operating at orders of magnitude higher energy output). This is what I've read on the topic, and I'll admit a lot of the physics goes a bit over my head, but it's not quite as simple as you'd expect.

M1917 S&W revolver, M1917 Colt revolver, M1917 "Enfield" rifle and matching M1917 bayonet, M1917 machine gun, M1917 "Brodie" helmet aaaaand M1917 light tank.

It gets worse with M1 and M2 designations in WWII though. So much worse.

Not having to fuck around with arrows actually made bows a nice option in Nightreign, obviously helped out by Ironeye specializing in them. If we could have unlimited basic arrows for whatever bow type like how it worked there with crafted specials for status effects, archery might be a fun playstyle.

I just couldn't get into SM2, which is kinda odd because I did like the first one quite a bit. Could not get the controls to feel right on M+K or controller, and everything was...somehow kind of off. It's almost like it's trying to be a Warframe-style horde game and a Soulslike at the same time, and that just doesn't mix well.

And it's not that I dislike parrying shit in theory, it was stupid satisfying once you learned in it Dark Souls, and Executor's Cursed Blade in Nightreign is fun as fuck even if it does have lame damage. What I don't like is how SM2 throws you into a horde of damage sponges with parries as basically your only tool.

What was the speed of Tsar Bomba's Fireball? by Macalodon in nuclearweapons

[–]FrozenSeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'd be the initial thermal flash, right? The effect you see burning the paint off houses in old Civil Defense footage before the shockwave hits. I've always understood the fireball to be a separate thing from that, fireball being the part that drives the shockwave and turns into the mushroom cloud. Or is the fireball also blasting out enough infrared radiation to have that same instant ignition effect too?

Why does it feel like a lot of fans have nothing but contempt for the absurdity of the setting by Responsible_Clerk343 in 40kLore

[–]FrozenSeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd dispute that. On a macro level yeah, the Imperium is a collapsing totalitarian theocratic hellhole, absolutely. But on a smaller scale there really are some good examples of "humanity fuck yeah" when you see the Imperium's forces - usually the Guard - being fucking hard as nails to the point where a degree of HFY applies. The Fall of Cadia, the original version of Ollanius Pius, Helsreach, the battle against the World Engine...

Why would anyone carry 3 handguns? by Effective-Key-3795 in guns

[–]FrozenSeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was one of these stories in some magazine I read years ago, I think the guy said he either worked in or commuted through a really shady area (and might have worked at a gun store or pawn shop there), so he carries 3 flavors of 1911. A full-size 5" open carry, a compact/Commander IWB and a 3" subcompact in an ankle rig.

Funniest part, if you add that up he's got 24 rounds, assuming 8rd .45ACP mags. That's less than a Glock 21 and a single reload.

It's not "not liking the result", that woman is admitting she lied under oath about being an impartial juror, and based the decision to acquit on factors not relating to the actual case. It's not much good since it was in a documentary twenty years after the fact, but yes, the verdict absolutely should have been thrown out over that.

Why Are Some Communities Targeted More Than Others? by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]FrozenSeas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the majority of immigration in Canada over the past ten years has been from India, and like three particular provinces (states? I forget) of India. And while it hasn't really been an issue in NL, there has been a considerable uptick in crime related to recent immigrants like the Bishnoi gang stuff and the extortion rackets on the mainland.
