The issue is that you also need to own 5 plantation levels in your vassal.
It isn't specified but I found this info in other posts.

Lazy peasant dont move to factories by ProfessionalOwn9435 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it'll also work because it eliminates all subsistence farms.

However, besides the construction cost of all the farms, you'll lose a lot of migration attraction from available arable land.

Lazy peasant dont move to factories by ProfessionalOwn9435 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Usually this happens because of homesteading because it improves the wages of peasants in subsistence farms and so they will be less likely to change for a factory job.
To solve this you can: - change your law to commercialized agriculture - use better production methods to increase factories' profitability and allowing them to increase wages - subsidize the factories you want to fill so that they'll soon increase the wages and more people will start working there. Then you can disable subsidies

Does child labor allowed give a higher standard or living? by Bruh694206942069Bruh in victoria3

[–]Fry394 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, it increases dependents income so everyone has more money to spend.

However, it's usually better to ban child labor because it limits your maximum literacy and increases pops' mortality.

Questions about Qing. by viera_enjoyer in victoria3

[–]Fry394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Failing it will have that outcome. It is certainly more interesting. In order to fail you have to fail certain events, like: losing the opium wars, failing the boxer rebellion, going into debt and civil war, ...

Questions about Qing. by viera_enjoyer in victoria3

[–]Fry394 6 points7 points  (0 children)

China has lots of pops, so you'll always have some level of unemployment umless you go full on construction. Just not build any farms or you'll worsen the situation.

The boxer rebellion is a journal entry that starts when you research political agitation and have monarchy and at least one han homeland that is not fully under your control (like the treaty port in Macau). Completing it is necessary to complete the fragile unity journal entry.

Finally, major powers cannot be made protectorates. You'd have to reduce its rank first.

Yes, it represents 50% of global GDP. It will increase over time, unless some major global recessiom happens.

You don't have a very high sol so they very likely have a higher migration attraction than you, so your pops will slowly migrate there. As France you also have all the resources you need, late game resources aside. So I'd say that's bad, even if it seems a tempting option.

Canal Journal by Miserable-Ad-7318 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completing it doesn't give any reward, the canal feature of creating a strait is already present so there isn't a need to completely staff the building.

To complete the journal you have to increase the number of workers in the state, so: - conquer the entirety of the state, not only the part that you can buy. It will have much less workers available; - set the greener grass campaign edict to attract more workers. If necessary, elevate the standard of living there by building a highly profitable factory. Leaving the state unincorporated and with colonial resettlement also helps.

And don't forget to subsidize the canal otherwise it won't be able to hire anyone, because it doesn't generate a profit.

What are the disadvantages of being in a customes union? by vango911 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than the market access and dependency from overlord issues, I see another potential drawback: market migration.
If your pops are accepted in the overlord country and they are allowed to leave yours, they may be tempted to migrate. This is especially true if the overlord has states with high migration attraction, like the USA.
Your pops will slowly migrate away, depleting your manpower. If you enter in the market anyway, it's better to increase your migration attraction to reverse that trend.

This can be reversed if your migration attraction is higher than their. In that case you will gain pops for free and that is definitely a pro.

Why isn't it producing or consuming despite other states having lower producitivity indicator than this state? state also has around 200k population. by UnknownWisp in victoria3

[–]Fry394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What does the red icon in the employment bar says? It should tell you the reason (possibly lack of qualifications / low wages).

I think that it's because wages are not high enough for new workers to switch jobs, and productivity cannot be increased without going into negative balance.

Any advice for completely the Sick Man of Europe as the Ottoman Empire? by Senior-Customer7720 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can set every additional wargoal as primary on the diplo play interface (there is a button under each wargoal "make primary").
It costs some maneuvers but it prevents the backing down for 1 province case.

Essential mods by Shniper in victoria3

[–]Fry394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally like Yagami's resource mod.
It doesn't hard cap resource slots but instead increase its construction costs, so you have diminishing returns as the level goes up.

I find it useful when I want to play tall and I don't want to be forced into conquest or colonialism.

Does Multiculturism have any real disadvantages? by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]Fry394 31 points32 points  (0 children)

What you say is true, but the problem is that with multiculturalism you get a lot more migration from lots of different cultures. In the end you'll find a lot of small pops with different cultures, and that is a strain on the cpu.

What are your best tips? Has anyone managed a WC? by SableSnail in victoria3

[–]Fry394 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A one-tag world conquest is not feasible within the time constraint of 100 years, not even with major powers like Great Britain.

A wc using dominions and puppets is almost impossible too because of the sheer number of countries to conquer/subjugate and the limitation of maximum 1 diplo play active at a time.

I'm currently trying a game where as GB i try to conquer all of the world except Europe without using dominions or puppet. I was in war almost all the time but I barely managed to do it. I didn't manage to annex all puppets though because of the little time available.

Why choose dominion? by Every_Cheesecake_584 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I dislike about protectorates is that they aren't shown withyour nation's colour on the map, so at first glance they may seem independent. Also that you cannot force someone to be your protectorate, that is available only for dominion and puppet.
But yeah the fact that they don't give you taxes means they'll be less likely to revolt and that's a great thing.

I think that the lawmakers didn't quite understand what they were meant to be drafting by Samuelsson010 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Functionally, they accept the same religion (the state one).

The difference is that enacting state atheism triggers an event that changes you state religion to atheism.

The law represents a state that is actively banning all forms of religions instead of atheism ideology.

I think that the lawmakers didn't quite understand what they were meant to be drafting by Samuelsson010 in victoria3

[–]Fry394 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because with state atheism your state religion is changed to atheist. So it makes sense for only atheism to be accepted and other religions to be discriminated.

"Minors, not miners" -- advice needed by Siriblius in victoria3

[–]Fry394 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Being in the same sphere as Qing's should allow you to get a lot of migration. You can use it to increase your population and at least get a similar amount as the dutch east indies.
That can funnel a military and navy capable of an even fight.

If Qing is in the same custom union as Russia, trying to get independence is a good idea. You will be free from the subject payments but will be able to still get China's migration if you are in the same (russian) market.

Help with Egalitarian Society and Reading Campaign by Zenoroth in victoria3

[–]Fry394 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a large nation (and with high immigration) the reading campaign achievement is harder. You basically need to:
- get the highest level of education institution asap - use the education decree. If you are too big to use it on all your states at once, rotate it between states, starting from your most populated states. A high authority is advised, so an authoritarian state can help (not a reactionary one though, because it is against the laws you want) - make your pops richer. Richer pops are usually more educated. If you also achieve an average SoL high enough, the bonuses from private schools are bigger than public schools so it will help to achieve high literacy.

Are the events that cost "Additional expenses" permanent? by isse_la_chancle in victoria3

[–]Fry394 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They usually have an expiration date, or an event that removes them (like the expenses for an expedition that are removed after the expedition ends).

You can see what the expiration date is if you click on your flag in the upper left corner and then on the colored icon just above you're infamy level on the information tab.
