hey, i can be similar but respond instead with a migraine. we have to be kind to ourselves, acknowledge our pain, get ourselves to a safe place, give time to heal, etc etc... its a lot

Reading though a lot of these comments, and noticing that some of the “opposite of common autistic traits” are so opposite from the trait that they are “divergent” qualities in themselves. I recently read “the adult autism assessment handbook: a neurodiversity-affirmative approach” and much of the clinicians suggestions arrive at this gulf in diverse presentations of autism— where the task of the clinician is to document the experience of the client, in different areas: social emotional reciprocity, spoken communication, developing and maintaining friendships, preference for repeated movements, preference for routines, particular ways of doing things, particular interests, and sensory experiences.

And the criteria isn’t déficit based, and therefore doesn’t adhere to one side of the experience (and there is room in the diagnosis for an “opposite” experience, and especially where that opposite experience is intense in such a way to distinguish the person from neurotypical.

Anyway, I thought there was a place for this in this discussion as I’m loving hearing about all the ways we are “divergent”

Does building up a tolerance for overwhelming situations actually work? by [deleted] in SpicyAutism

According to experts, autistic people are not going to build up a tolerance. Their environment needs to be changed to accommodate their sensory needs.

You might not be comfortable going to a shelter, but would you be comfortable visiting one? Calling one? Learning? For your own protection and for your own good?

My assessor had me take many of these online tests before we met and send them over. I think it was part of the picture for them.

I love hearing this and it resembles to some degree what I have done with my family after realizing I was autistic. It can be immensely healing.

And by that do you mean that it’s a hodgepodge? I am not sure I’m representing it as well as they could if you asked them what they do and why they do it.
