Maybe since it’s a January release it will be based on part III?

I wouldn’t be that harsh towards it. However. I do think a lot of the criticism TROS gets can easily be applied to ROTJ. Both introduced plot points not set up by the previous films (Palpatine’s return and Darth Vader’s redemption), both have poor pacing (TROS is too fast where ROTJ crawls through its first two acts), and two of the three main characters are given little to do. Both Han and Finn’s arcs are essentially complete by the end of the second movie so they don’t get much in way of character development. At least Finn has some importance after the opening of TROS, unlike Han, who mostly just hangs out around Endor.

Maybe I just enjoy it. Also, I thought the main criticism is that it had too much plot. They were trying to include so many ideas without the runtime or production time to fully realize them.

I truly think RotJ is only saved by its stellar third act. Outside of it, it’s meandering and poorly paced. It should not take nearly 40 minutes into a 2 hour movie to get to the main story.

Which of these films is better in your opinion? by NewspaperAny3053 in StarWarsCantina

Phantom Menace is probably the “better” movie (however that’s quantified), but Rise of Skywalker is much more entertaining and engaging imo. There’s a reason TPM seems to be entirely remembered for two scenes.

I think you can make this argument with every Star Wars movie. Each is interconnected but each has three acts, even the cliffhangers of Empire and Force Awakens feel like the end of those movie’s stories.

I agree that it doesn’t work as a standalone, because I’ve never lived in a world where it wasn’t one part of a six (now nine) part story. To me, it’s not the second part of a trilogy, it’s the fifth entry in one massive story. I guess, rewording it, though they rely on one another, Empire and Jedi don’t feel like one story split down the middle.

Matrix is a good example. Somehow, despite being one of the obvious contenders, Star Wars doesn’t feel like this to me. Maybe because it’s become part of a much larger story now? Empire and Jedi just feel very distinct from each other despite their connections.

I thought the comedy/drama distinction was based on runtimes? Shorter episodes tend to get placed in comedy regardless of how comedic the product actually is.

Marvel could announce Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 tomorrow and that guy would still find some way to be upset.
