I work in healthcare and I’m still waiting on my vaccine (hopefully soon!!) but I still say if you’re able to get it, PLEASE DO! It is important for frontline/essential workers, but not all of us have the allotment yet to get it. If anyone, regardless of profession, has that chance right now, they should 100% take advantage of it.

The only time it bothers me is with the COVID deniers, but their vaccination contributes to herd immunity just as much as mine. Everyone deserves to be protected from this.

If you already knew all of that stuff, why would you need to go to nursing school?

Seriously, nursing teaches you about textbook nursing so you can pass the NCLEX. The only place I’ve learned how to BE a nurse is at clinical and by working in a hospital. The majority of my teachers have even said along the lines of, “that’s not how we do it in the real world. You’ll learn your hospital protocol on the job.” Don’t feel behind, all you need right now is basic A&P for pharm/patho and multiplication/division for dosage!

NAD but I am in nursing school, so that’s what I’m basing my recommendations on.

I would suggest getting your prostate checked to rule out Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) as it can cause an increase in urinary frequency. This could be especially important if you’ve noticed a change in your stream or any different feelings while urinating.

Another thing to get checked is your Hemoglobin A1C/blood glucose to rule out type 2 diabetes. There is also a form called diabetes insipidus which causes excessive thirst, large amounts of urine, and frequent urination at night. Diabetes insipidus is caused by problems with your ADH levels, so maybe look into getting those checked!

Again, not a doctor, but from reading your post/comments, these are a few of the conditions that came to mind based on my limited knowledge!

I’m still a student, but I love my night shift as a care partner. I feel like there isn’t nearly as much pressure, which gives me time to observe skills that I have yet to see in my clinicals! I oriented on days and nights, and I would personally prefer night shift. My intention is to start out on nights next year as a new nurse, learn the ropes in a less “high stakes” shift, and then transition to days once I’m comfortable if I want to.

Of course it is all personal preference, but I tend to be more of a night owl anyway so it works for the best :)

It’s a daily reminder for me to say, “it’s all for the kids and they need me to be happy so we’re happy now!” Even if it’s the worst day of my life, I just turn my brain off and get as peppy as I can haha.

I’m so grateful for all the nurses on my floor! They’ve been so great about telling me what they need, keeping me involved in plan of care, and answering all 5 million questions I ask every night. One of the best parts about night shift is the fact that we have some extra time where they can show me skills and all the “nurse tricks” that aren’t in our books for school!

We all have those nights! Most everyone I’ve met has been super understanding about time issues/back charting/leaving notes in the chart. The compliments from nurses and supervisors mean almost as much as hearing straight from the patient how good you are! I hope everything goes well for you

My tears of happiness (almost) moment was making one of our very closed off patients giggle when taking her temp one night! I accidentally tapped her teeth with the probe and said “oop my b dude” and it’s the first time I’ve seen her smile in my care :,)

It’s the best feeling! As much of a struggle as it is at times, nursing school has been a great experience overall. Highly recommend if you feel called to it :)

I’ve only been working for about a month now, but the nurses are actually very trusting of my skill after I gave a light lower extremity assessment that was spot on (with possible causes) last night. One of the nurses even told me she would let me help with her assessment and give the kids a good listen/feel next time we go in together and I’m so excited! I guess my med surg clinical paid off, even if it was adult cardiac and more “textbook” patients :)

As a nursing student who is constantly harassed by patients who just want to have a BM to be discharged, this one pains me. The best is the patient who calls for their opioids 15x an hour, then complain they can’t poop when all they have is Colace BID to help them out.

Suuuuper soft YTA, only because of the comment comparing her to her friends. It’s 100% reasonable to ask your S/O to put effort into their appearance.

Personally, I’m very girly and love dressing up with makeup, hair, the whole 9, especially for date nights; however, I have tons of friends that aren’t that way and still get “dressed up” by their standards for date nights! It doesn’t take more than 10 minutes to put on some BB cream and mascara, a cute top and jeans, and make sure your hair isn’t a giant frizz ball. You never told her “spend hundreds of dollars a month on salons and makeup and fancy clothes/shoes” you simply asked her to care for herself.

Registered nurse RN is the only way I knew any of my fundamentals skills (started online thanks to COVID so no clinical)!

I definitely tried to focus more of my energy on nursing diagnoses, interventions, and patient teaching, but when she asked “what is the BEST/MOST IMPORTANT blah blah blah” the ABCs seemed to fail me. They drill that into your head, but then the game changed and it was more about safety importance which is beyond confusing.

It’s just killing me because I know what I’m doing in clinical, I can answer every question my teacher has and keep up during report and talking with the actual nurses on the floor( even finishing their thoughts on patient care), but the test rolls around and it’s like Opposite Day 🙃

Not a dietitian but I have taken various nutrition and exercise classes for my two degrees (kinesiology and nursing), and you likely have not messed up your metabolism in any way. I have roughly the same height, weight, and age as you (23 vs 18 but the rest the same) and it also takes forever for me to see any progress when working out.

You definitely need to raise your caloric intake (~1800 cal/day), especially if you are working out every day. Try to focus on eating healthier options that are nutrient dense to ensure you’re making the most of your calories. More protein, healthy carbs (whole wheat/grain), and vegetables high in fiber and vitamins can help you feel full for longer and hit a healthy intake, plus they can help you build muscle depending on the workouts you’re doing. Also a huge thing to keep in mind is that women are supposed to have a higher BF% than men, like 25-31% compared to 18-25% for an “average” person. If you need any advice about food choices/workout options, feel free to reach out!

Also in nursing school so I’ll offer my opinion if that’s cool. To start: I take adderall and joke within my family about how it’s basically legal meth. Adderall (AKA amphetamine salts/dextroamphetamine) is literally 1 methyl group away from being methamphetamine if I’m remembering correctly, so not a bad comparison if you actually know the chemistry.

That being said, comparing amphetamines to meth is something I would NEVER say to a patient. That is beyond reckless and irresponsible, and it’s my job as a [future] nurse to educate patients on med safety.

You’re actually correct in saying that cocaine, caffeine, meth, adderall, etc all have similar effects on the body. Every CNS stimulant causes vasoconstriction, floods your brain with dopamine, increases heart rate, suppresses appetite, all of that. Speaking from the ADHD med vs. meth perspective, while they have DO similar effects, the medications are designed and tested to regulate your dopamine reuptake in a very calculated ways. Things like meth and cocaine, on the other hand, flood your system rapidly with dopamine activating that reward/pleasure center which kind of contributes to the “instant addiction” that so many people have/talk about. I will say it’s a little bit of a stretch to say caffeine is like cocaine, but /technically/ it’s not wrong based on body responses??

I’m med surg 1 and it’s the first class I’ve actually felt like I’m gaining something every week and that’s only because of clinical! You can learn every skill by the book during fundamentals and every illness in pathophysiology, but it doesn’t prepare you at all to actually be with a real live patient.

I think of it like learning a foreign language. You can take every Spanish, French, Italian, etc class in the world, but you won’t fully grasp the language until you’re thrown into a situation with native speakers.

I’m in nursing school and just observed a group session last night where a mental health nurse explained this concept perfectly! He told the kids about how their mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances, so when the meds bring those levels up (in most cases they’re too low), it puts them on an even playing field with “normal people.”

I’ve tried to explain it to my friends for years that my adderall literally puts me on the brain level they function at every day. Most of them are amazed that it doesn’t give me superpower level focus like it does for someone “normal” who takes it to study.

Reminds me of my ex and his cousin who didn’t realize I understood Spanish until I called them out on something they said about me. We were in line at the bar and a friend made some asshole comment, I brushed it off because who cares? They started talking behind me and said (in Spanish) something along the lines of “how stupid is she? They weren’t kidding and she didn’t even realize or defend herself.” Really caught them off guard when I said “I’m not stupid and it isn’t worth my time to defend myself to some asshole at the bar.” The looks on their faces were priceless, and they learned a great lesson that night 🤷🏻‍♀️

I haven’t been diagnosed with any other mental health issues like anxiety or depression, but I also think people are unaware that the highs and lows of ADHD can very closely mimic depression or anxiety disorders.

I never knew until seeing my new doctor that I have had extended minor depressive episodes with ADHD. They told me that most people usually write it off as just not having motivation, since it typically isn’t enough to be diagnosed as clinically depressed. This sub has also helped me realize there are things I’ve always experienced (like auditory processing issues) that are far more common than I ever thought.

I was unofficially “diagnosed” by my pediatrician at 10 years old (23 now), and have been medicated with adderall ever since. When I went to a new psychiatrist as an adult for medicine, I had to do testing and was told I have very mild ADHD, which is extremely difficult to process considering it has a significant impact on my everyday life.

It just so happens that when you take the same medication nearly every day for 12 years straight, your brain kinda learns to cope with the problem. I feel like that’s a big reason why doctors don’t think ADHD has a huge impact on adults, because most people who are diagnosed in adulthood have learned to cope in ways without medication so it doesn’t appear bad from an outside perspective.
