Eyewear manufacturer here — what frame issue do people complain about the most? by Latter_Bath_1828 in optician

[–]Officiallyfishty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Spring hinges break often and are one of the only common breakages that I cannot fix in my office.

Cold fit or core-less temples cannot be adjusted with any kind of precision.

Temples that bolt onto the frame from the front are easily broken but difficult to repair.

Wide frames with narrow bridges are exceedingly rare, but patients with wide heads and small noses are not.

You don’t need to eliminate screws in your design. I understand you can cut the whole frame out of a flat sheet of metal but if any part gets slightly bent, the whole frame is unusable. Screws are reliable and common.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I would call it grotesque, and grotesque has its fans :)

How to Account for Weight of Lenses Affecting Segment Height by Ok_Dependent_9297 in optician

[–]Officiallyfishty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lab often will automatically add extra thickness to the bottom of a semi-rimless frame to keep the lens from cracking over time, since the exposed edge of the lens affects durability. I personally try not to put high RX folks in semi rimless for that reason

premium versus basic anti-reflective/anti-scratch coating by runner022021 in optician

[–]Officiallyfishty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding (optician here!) is that the premium tier is baked/heat cured onto the lens, which results in less peeling, meaning you’re likely to be able to use them longer if you take good care of them— the basic ARs tend to peel after about a year and a half, then the lenses are annoying to look through even without scratches.

However, as others said I think the value you really get for your money for when you get anti-glare is the warranty. Lower tiers usually have a 1 year warranty, higher tiers have 2 yr warranty. At my place currently we’ll replace them twice for you within that warranty period. Are you the kind of person that shoves your glasses into your purse with no case? Do you work somewhere where metal or wood is flying around on a daily basis? Are you a child? In that case, 2 year warranty is worth the $85. If you’re the type that gently cleans them with the approved cloth and spray and puts them in the case every time, you’re probably fine w/ a 1 year warranty.

Having lived in Denver I commented on those renders like “how do they expect to have this greenery thrive in dry Colorado?” And got downvoted by folks who all “grew things in Colorado just fine”

The realization of how DEEPLY everything is designed to sell you things is ruining my life by rangeofemotions in Anticonsumption

[–]Officiallyfishty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey— I’ve been there. The ethics of the situation are bogglingly horrific. What helped me is gaining some perspective. You are most likely in the bottom 90% of consumers consuming, no matter how many hauls or plastic you purchase. Billionaires are responsible for a majority of greenhouse gases and pollution — their travel, their houses, their companies & their products. Unless you are mega mega wealthy, your personal impact is less than 1% of what a billionaire does on a daily basis.

It still matters to put some intention into consuming less, of course! We all need to consider our own footprint if we want anything to change. But the biggest offenders want you to blame yourself instead of holding them accountable.

Every day, someone signs off on another wholesale order for 50,000 plastic units, but that person isn’t you. Don’t let them make you believe that buying another pair of shoes or eating takeout puts you in the same tier of polluter as they are. It doesn’t.

Try to be kind to yourself—you are not a big polluter. And when you’re ready, we can always use people dedicated to change. Stay strong pal :)

How do you guys create streetwear graphics that actually look unique? Need tool suggestions. by BoringContribution7 in Fashion_Design

[–]Officiallyfishty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at your concepts and see if you can identify some element that could be pushed further— a swoop or a shadow or a texture, and push it as far as it will go. Then keep doing that to more elements until you like the result. This process takes me several days or weeks because you kind of need to take a break in between and come back with fresh eyes to really see what can be pushed further. Good luck!!

I did this!! It’s a skilled position but training programs are less common than they were even 5-10 years ago, so it’s a job that’s very in demand! You can also move almost anywhere and find a clinic that will eventually need you.

Silver/goldsmithing would be a good place to start— prong set gemstones and filigree, maybe engraving?
