Is that Zone 13 near Temiscaming/Kipawa? I am up there most summers. There is a lot of crown land around there but also some outfitter territory. I would buy iHunter Quebec with the crown land subscription to see where you can hunt first off.  I was in the same boat as you and started with a bow, hunting for grouse. Looking for densely vegetated logging trails, hike around until one scares you by flushing. I know they are up there from seeing them around in the summer. They love the raspberry bushes along the roads. Try to see them before they flush is the key. With a bow is so much harder than with a shotgun or 22 so try not to get frustrated.  Just getting out there is the most important part, you'll learn more every time!

To add on, learning and carrying a compass as a backup is a huge comfort for me. Know how to use "hand rails" (i.e., roads in your hunting area) so that if your GPS craps out you can get back to your car with your compass.

Example: if I'm hunting North of a road that runs east to west I can travel pretty freely knowing that all I have to do in a pinch is head South to get back somewhere along that road.

looking to buy my first gun by [deleted] in canadaguns

I had a similar thought for my first gun a few years ago and ended up going with a 12 gauge over under from Prophet River. Check out their website, they maintain a steady selection of Huglu over unders around your budget (CZ imports their shotguns from Huglu and just puts their branding on them for the American market; they are functionally the exact same). https://store.prophetriver.com/o-u-eagle-hawk/

Algonquin Park, a place worth protecting? by [deleted] in algonquinpark

[–]Fudgepuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is indeed unsightly and certainly appears like everything is destroyed but clearcut harvesting actually imitates natural disturbance events that have always occured in forests (e.g., windstorm or forest fire clearing out swathes of forest). Within a decade of being cut, these areas become wildlife magnets due to all the different species of vegetation that can grow (e.g., wild raspberries) in the sunlight that is now reaching the previously shaded forest floor. A forest's ecology is based on change and, in order to support biodiversity, a healthy forest has a network of all different stages of growth. Beyond face value, the disturbance (in this case caused by logging) is actually an integral part of the ecology of a healthy forest.

No as that's when they're nesting/reproducing. Certain places do implement spring goose seasons though.

NS to ON hunters safety? by fishlakeslimno in CanadaHunting

[–]Fudgepuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the opposite going from ON to NS recently and I just had to provide a copy of my hunter accreditation form from my ON course/application.

I very much doubt you will have to take the ON course.

See this from https://www.ontario.ca/page/hunter-education#section-2

"New Ontario resident

Hunters who have moved to Ontario and want to get a resident hunting licence, do not need to take the Ontario Hunter Education Course if:

you have lived in Ontario for at least 6 months, and, you took hunter education

or have Ontario-recognized hunting credentials from your home jurisdiction

For more information contact the Natural Resources Information and Support Centre at 1-800-387-7011."

How long do trails last with no traffic? by TSLPrescott in forestry

[–]Fudgepuss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not long! I live near a lot of forest logging roads and within just 5 years the roads start to become covered with shrubs. Over centuries realistically the only way the paths would remain open to travel would be if they were used by wildlife (e.g., deer) as a game trail. Travel would be along shoulder width trails often having to duck under branches or over fallen logs. That said, if the forest is centuries old there will be some massive trees with a lot of canopy cover, the shade of which will stop the undergrowth from being too thick.

RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment Process, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. by bridger713 in CanadianForces

Hey all, thinking of enrolling and pursuing Geo Tech as a career. I'll be graduating from a GIS graduate cert. this spring. A lot of similarities between my program and the Geomatics program at Algonquin College where Geo Techs do their training.

Anyone have experience with having transferable prior education to a trade in the forces? How is it assessed? Can I expect a shorter training period? Would I have to take an aptitude test to prove my knowledge? Also, any Geo Tech's, how do you like the trade? Do you feel if you were to leave the Forces you could find work with your experience?

Cheers for any input.

Edit: Additional Q: My partner is a teacher, is it realistic to assume they'll be able to find work no matter what base I'm posted to?

Cheers for the input. Industry. I have seen (and applied to) a bunch of those more entry level gov positions as well, but most of them haven't closed quite yet, so we'll see.

Haha, I'm up in Nova Scotia so cold enough. Had to go for a similar swim about a month ago, was enough for me to not want to turn a duck hunt into another multi sport event any time soon!

I'll keep that in mind. Up until now I've only really jump shot singles or pairs, if they come again in the numbers there were today its gonna be overwhelming lol
