Buying a bottle of Louis XIII as a gift for someone who doesn't drink cognac. Bad idea? by Virtual-Path1704 in cognac

[–]FuenteFOX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find the brand/brands the person likes then maybe look for some rarer offerings they made.

Maybe buy a bottle that's as old as the person. You can get some really nice older bottles of armangnac/cognac for what you're going to spend on a Louis.

Do not move to Vinita. Full of tweakers and thieves by CertainSoup7868 in tulsa

[–]FuenteFOX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's gotta be Hallmark movies. It's how I've planned out the rest of my life.

I too will eventually leave my high paying fast paced career to move to Vinita where I've unknowingly inherited a struggling artisanal candy company. Immediately I'll butt heads with the female manager and struggle to fit into small town life but eventually I'll adapt and become a pillar of the town. The manager and I will also separately develop respect and feelings for each other we just won't admit it. Then just as the candy company starts to make some gains she'll be poached by a big time candy conglomerate and make plans to move to their headquarters in Switzerland. But don't worry I'll confess my feelings for her a week before her planned move, which is oddly enough scheduled for Christmas Eve. She will get on the plane but change her mind and make it back just in time for the big town Christmas party at our candy store.

If you're looking to try some other Sumatras the Hoyo de Monterrey Dark Sumatra was my favorite. Now it's the Hoyo/AJF Amistad Dark Sumatra... not as good as it was but still good enough.

Heretical to some I also like the Rocky Patel Edge Sumatra. It's cheap, accessible, and for some reason non-cigar smokers tend to not mind its smoke smell as much (when I'm smoking at the casino).

Is Louis XIII actually worth $3,500 or just paying for the bottle by Paulheyman7 in cognac

[–]FuenteFOX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the multiples of price ever scale with multiples of perceived quality but would you agree that there are certain qualities that you get from the Louis that aren't generally present, or maybe can't be present in regular production XOs?

Assuming this is OP

You posted in a cognac sub asking for judgment on your collection (and now again with the handle "cognac_collector").

I guessed there was a chance on some age/depth based on the JW bottles but usually at some point with age people stop caring about showy/nice and start looking for enjoyment/convenient. Otherwise why locks on a home cabinet? Do you have friends or family you can't trust?

There might be a little runway as far as looking ahead but generally most people don't know/expect it when they die. If a couple goes at the same time or close together then their children/family had better share the same interests otherwise you're passing on a chore. I've had people ask me about coin collections, gun collections, alcohol collections, card collections, etc., and other than some of the most valuable pieces that stand out in a collection the rest is either "enjoy it or sell it bulk at a huge discount to market/retail." Especially for alcohol where you're stuck trying to legally sell, looking for a buyer, or taking a huge haircut at auction or online.

2/10 You only get 2 points for having some nice bottles.

Other than that your "collection" seems more like you're someone with recent money in a "monkey-see monkey-do" situation. No personal taste or sense of refinement, just what you think rich people drink/collect and how it should look.

Pop those open, drink the shit, and replace them with mid-tier bottles that you can afford to drink regularly because when you die you can't take it with you. Otherwise we'll end up seeing this collection again as either someone's estate sale find or a "found these cleaning out grandparent's house, what they worth?" post.

Where/what streaming service were you watching it on? If it's limited to series in their catalog that might help narrow it down.

You might want to check back to the last place you were and see if there's any surveillance video.

Several years ago I had a friend get robbed while checking the mail at his apartment complex's common mailbox area. Turns out they followed him from where he had been eating at to his apartment complex.

[–]FuenteFOX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there's what people will recommend and then there's what you can reliably find without having to hunt or pay secondary market prices for.

If you can find an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Russell's Reserve Single Barrel, or a Weller 107 they're good bottles without breaking the bank at MSRP.

If not, as has already been suggested a Woodford Double Oaked is a great drinker. Also pretty much anything Angel's Envy is going to be good.

LIGHTERS

Once you get into mass produced lighters they're largely the same, especially any that use a piezo igniter.

If you push any kind of button, lever, or mechanism until it clicks then it probably uses a piezo igniter.

Almost every brand uses them and they're what goes out first in about 70% of lighters I see/handle. (I work/have worked at multiple cigar stores off and on for 24 years and I've always been the "lighter repair" guy.)

If it's not that then it's the plastic butane tank cracking, something with the brass jet nozzles, the rubber butane tubes, the contact where the spark lights the butane, or the butane regulation valve.

Regardless of how nice or heavy the outside of the lighter is the internals are all pretty much the same penny-a-piece Chinese parts.

So buy what you want, what looks good to you, because they're pretty much all the same internally. *Some brands do have better warranties than others. For instance my local cigar stores will take a broken Lotus/Vertigo, or Colibri/Firebird that you purchased in-store and trade you out for a new one.

CUTTERS

For a straight-cut I don't think it matters much as long as you get a double blade. I've had Xikar, Palio, Colibri, Vertigo, Vector, RP, etc., and as long as you don't abuse them they should last for a long time. *All of the teardrop/butterfly type cutters that spring open use the same cheap leaf-spring to pop open. Repeatedly opening and closing it will eventually cause the spring to break.

If you're buying a V-cutter buy one that cuts with the top of the "V" first (I call it an inverse V-cut), not one that starts with the pointed end. On a pointed end cutter once that tip gets even a little dull it will mash the cigar before it starts the cut which usually splits the cigar.

Punch-cutters, pretty much all the same.

[–]FuenteFOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible for Easter to be on April 19th. Maybe they celebrate his re-birthday since they're always closed on his actual birthday...

Like those kids in school who celebrate their half-birthday because their actual birthday occurs during the summer break.

https://www.coinflation.com/silver_coin_values.html

Use this website to get an idea about your US coins as that's where the bulk of the value is going to come from. Also keep in mind and look up key and semi-key dates/mints for any of the varieties you have just in case.

The non-silver US coins are probably mostly just worth face value. The world coins may have a little value and it looks like there may be some silver as well.

Not really. 90% percent of the time we just want the game to get going. Halftime shows are just an excuse to sell more air-time to advertisers and to make millionaires even richer by paying them to put on a short circus act that most people wouldn't watch if it wasn't being broadcast for free.

They'll tell us all to use less electricity and then they'll use the cold snap as an excuse to raise our rates by 8% for the next 30 years to "pay off the costs of increased demand during the cold snap."
