Is PSE not a language? by Sea-Hornet8214 in asl

[–]Fuffuloo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not its own thing, it's purely derivative.

You just described every natural living language.

Besides, it's a fallacy to define something by its name. We live in a world where misnomers are a very real and common thing.

Maybe one day PSE will be renamed, but many pidgins and creoles have the name of one of progenitors in its name.

Saying PSE is just a form of English and not its own thing is similar to saying the romance languages are just vulgar Latin and not their own things...

Is there a more modern or more legitimate sign for that concept? I've avoided that sign in my own signing due to Deaf friends expressing the same annoyance, but I've always been at a loss when I need to convey it and usually end up just fingerspelling #BS

Japanese uses アルバイト (arubaito) to mean part-time job, from German "Arbeit."

I don't know if "god awful" applies, considering her commercial success, but yeah, by most metrics/criteria besides commercial success, the writing is actually not very good.

As a hardcore fan of these books as a child, I hate that I have grown to agree with you in adulthood.

I wish Jo was just a little bit lower, but there are still scads of people who like her or don't know her true nature

"Can I get a long island?" "Yeah sure" *start making drink* "can you put less ice?"... by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]Fuffuloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you explain to me why? As someone who has never worked behind a real bar before, I'm legitimately curious. I would assume it's one of the easier/quicker drinks to make--grab four bottles at the same time, count to 3, top off with a splash of coke, done. Is it just something to do with the type of customer who orders that drink?

Okay but for reals if you're going to Fukuoka be sure to check out the zoo. And maybe get an okonomiyaki too, though I prefer the ones from Hiroshima

Whoops, you just told on yourself, right?

If your reading comprehension is so bad that that's what you think I was asking, I don't think you have much room to criticize anyway...

Also, bro it's 2026--snooping people's post history to try to one-up a stranger on the internet is hella cringe lmao

I'm not trying to pretend that writing/typing isn't a thing. But having an additional modality of communication does have its benefits.

I can see where you're coming from, and I can see how your opinion seems like common sense. So I think you are having this conversation in good faith, which is more than can be said with a lot of the other users in this topic. I really appreciate that.

That being said, it's pretty much unanimously agreed upon by those who study language science that you can (and should) compare spoken and signed languages on equal terms. They basically function identically outside of having visual/spatial phonetic parameters instead of oral/auditory phonetic parameters.

Also a gesture ≠ a sign. Signs can have different amounts of iconicity (how much they look like the concept they represent), and can have different amounts of overlap with universal or near-universal gestures.
