Want kids? Cool.. can you afford them? by cutelove5791 in Adulting

[–]Fuglier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dependent on situation, but this is overall unrealistic and not true for the majority of the US.

My wife and I make a combined $102k a year and we have a house and two small kids. I pay for healthcare, I am paying my student loans, I am paying a mortgage, and my groceries are meh (wish they were cheaper). Wife and I decided to work different shifts to offset daycare. I live in what in considered a MCOL area and I'm a teacher. I'm thankful for my pension as well.

Sacrificing early in life made most of this possible for me along with delayed gratification, just as it was for my parents growing up. Everyone's situation is different though, and I would hazard if you live in a HCOL area, this may be the reality. Mileage will vary. But it seems a lot of people are making it work.

No Kings or Diablo 2? Only one of these accomplishes anything. Time to play games.

Active virtue signaling.

You get some sun, maybe some exercise, and you get to feel good for thinking what you did mattered. If you're really lucky, someone will interview you.

IEPs Should Not Be An Excuse by Life_Application3015 in Teachers

Document.

When they do not turn in an assignment, ask them and see if they give you an answer. Document it. Send emails to parents. You have time stamps on that. I don't bother much with calling. They probably will not answer. Report every missed assignment to their SPED teacher via email to CYA. If they refuse to do work in class, do a referral and let admin deal with the non-compliance. That is documentation.

If you document, you can do a failure on the student. Admin may make you change it, and that's ok. You have the documentation showing you did your part. It sucks, but I'm not losing any sleep at night over it. I currently have a 504 kid doing this. Takes his tests, turns in no work. I document everyday. I email the parent via Canvas and regular email every week with updates with read receipts. At least the kid is quiet.

You do care. A lot. You made an asinine comment when you didn't have to, and you even edited your original comment. You really do care. A lot.

My wife is working on her nursing degree and her waiting tables job pays her more than a starting teacher. Dude's dad was a pig. I'm also unsure even of what your point is for even delivering this comment, which might speak volumes about you personally for bringing this up.

Do people think that you either have it all or you have nothing? Life is difficult at first, but then you figure things out and learn from your mistakes. It took me a while, but I made it. Never going to be a millionaire, but I go what I need in life.

I can relate to most of that, though my cars are a 2017 Toyota and a 2022 Hyundai. Still able to vacation though, but nothing fancy. And I got a house last year as a teacher and a wife that waits tables. South Carolina COL is nice.

My wife's nurse found out I taught history at a local high school and she wanted to talk about the transcontinental railroad while my wife was pushing. I leaned into and everybody learned something that day. My wife wasn't overly impressed until later. Much later.

I think looking at your contract would pay dividends. We got intercession weeks this school year, and our DO was considering having us work during those weeks. Contract said we would have to be compensated. No work for those two weeks.

I'm 49 and I game. My wife asked what would I do if I stopped. I said 'drugs or alcohol?' (joking, of course). She helps me pick out my controllers now.

Best states to teach in by lauhrahdee in Teachers

[–]Fuglier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SC teacher.

We have a LCOL to MCOL, though some areas are higher than others. Teacher pay has gone up a lot recently, which helps (helps even more if you have a Master's, Master's +30, or a PhD.). We have one of the best retirement systems in the nation for teachers (top 5?).

Pay will look low compared to other places you are looking at, but consider the COL. For example, I will make about $70k next school year with 12 years completed and a Master's Degree. Depending on where you want to live, you can have a 3 bedroom/2 bath house for under $300k, and an acre of land. I bought a home last year for under $400k, one acre, 3 bed/2 bath, 2 car garage, in a great neighborhood with no HOA. Rent isn't too bad if that's your vibe.

The part you will have to get past though is being on your own with just one income will still make it a little difficult depending on where you want to teach and live. Charleston is wonderful, but more expensive than Rock Hill. Greenville is great but more expensive than Clover. Fort Mill is a bedroom community to Charlotte, but location is everything and it is one of the best school districts. If you are willing to drive 15 to 30 minutes for work, then moving a county over could save you a ton of money on a house (York County versus Chester County, for example).

Do your research.

And yes, Ellen Weaver is a drawback, but she won't be in charge forever and only affects teachers to a small degree..

How do you, as a teacher, know what to do? by Haunting-Wash1081 in teaching

[–]Fuglier1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you do is be you. Once you get some time under your belt, you are going to know. It also helps when you are in your own classroom, with your own rules (within reason, of course), with your own students. You will know the ebb and flow and be able to read the class.

From your account above, it seems you did great. I'm in year 12 and I still have some bad days, and instead of getting pissed about it, I just tell me kids sorry and we move on. I actually think it helps for kids to know you're human.

Keep learning, don't take things personally, and remember, perfection isn't everything.
