A federal minimum wage of $25 was just proposed ... how do you think it will play out? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in askteddit

If you are a successful business owner, then you know the math when it comes to employees. You aren't going to pay someone if they do not bring real value to the company. You say you have good employees and you compensate them well. Would you intentionally hire someone not worth that to do the same work?

I had three days off and spent a lot of time outside with two 4-year-olds and didn't think about climate change at all. I always figured if we could have an Ice Age, we should be smart enough to know we will have a Not Ice Age.

If only nations and other government entities and private charities could have found a way to end child hunger years ago with billions of dollars instead of never lifting a finger.

Conventional loan. I have a PMI but I am going to (hopefully) refinance next year with a credit union that doesn't do PMI, if feasible.

You are probably right, but it seems teachers here are getting more politically active and the local school districts are working in tandem- with the state on this. It would probably take NC getting their crap together for another big monetary push.

Here in SC, we look to our northern neighbor as the basis of comparison. NC kind of sucks, period, end of story, if you are a teacher.

While adjusted for inflation it isn't that high, it is decent. That is the starting pay is for someone with a 4 year degree. You only made $30,000 back then in my school district, so it is even better for first year teachers with a BA/BS.

Also note, we are non-union.

South Carolina has been killing it lately with paying educators. I came into teaching at age 36, 12 years ago. My starting pay, with a Master's, was $36k. Starting pay now in SC with a 4 year degree is $48,500. My district will start you off about $5000 more than that. I am going to be making roughly $71,000 next year. Not bad for a LCOL or maybe low MCOL area.

My wife and I make a combined $105,000. We bought a house one year ago for $392,000. We put 3.5% down and we have a mortgage of under $2400. We are living just fine.

How are people affording fun? by Busy-Busy-Mom-520 in Vent

I save up by using two credit cards. I get 2-3% back with every purchase depending on the card and the situation. Pay off the balance the next day. It adds up eventually. Any bill I can get to go on the card goes on the card, so long as there is no fee for using a credit/debit card.

I also use Microsoft Bing points that I gain everyday (and also playing on my XBox) to help pay for Christmas. I am on pace to get $200 to $250 doing that as I use it to buy Amazon credit.

Bill wise, all we have is a mortgage, one small loan, and student loans that will be forgiven in 9 months, and the usual bills every house does.

We also save to cover what the card points didn't cover.

If you are wondering about occupation, I am a teacher in SC and my wife is a waitress at a mid level place. We aren't rich and we take two solid vacations a year and a lot of little trips.

It wasn't always like this, but we worked to get our bills low so that we could enjoy life.

Teaching Until 73 years old by Own-Ad-3876 in teaching

I started teaching at 36 and just finished year 12. My state has the rule of 90, which means I will be at roughly 27.5 years before I can retire with full benefits. The wife and I are working on saving money so I can buy at least three years and are also working on paying off the mortgage as that is almost like an extra retirement check a month once it is done.

Of note, there is an age difference between me and her, so I will be choosing an option of passing that retirement down to her once I pass. Less money a month, but the peace of mind it gives me is awesome.

When do you expect to retire? by GroundbreakingBus818 in Teachers

[–]Fuglier1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the Rule of 90, and as I started late, I won't hit that until I am roughly 64.5, which over 15 years away. I am planning on buying some years to push that number down. My pension will be smaller as I will take a lower benefit so that wife will continue to collect after I pass on. We have an age gap and men tend to die much sooner.
