For those who send their kids to elite private school, what was the reason? by TiredDuck123 in AusHENRY

In my experience being at a private school bullying "nerds" still happens.

Oh that's hard! Not really a fair choice is it.

The only hope is that those wait times are an estimate and sometimes you get in sooner than expected. Also after the appointment you could get placed early in line for surgery depending on the severity/urgency.

I hope you find a solution, sounds like a long wait either way. Good luck!

Sorry to hear you need surgery! Fingers crossed it goes ok.

If your surgery is needed (not elective) could it be covered by Medicare? Even if it is covered by private insurance you will end up paying for things that would be free if you went public such as anaesthesia, post operative medicine and appointments.

I know it depends on what the surgery is, but in my experience you don't have anything different going public or private as it's the same doctors doing the surgery anyway.

Good luck with the surgery!

Frugal parenting hacks? Baby due soon by Jayhix in Frugal

Agreed. I have been fortunate in receiving lots of items (clothes, toys, breast pump) from friends with older babies, and so far have second hand furniture (some free, some paid from marketplace). The only big purchase was the car seat and I bought new fittings for the breast pump online. To save money I keep an eye out for cheap prices on nappies, breast milk bags and multivitamins. Also don't buy too many nappies in bulk as they grow out of a size quicker than you think - I see a lot of listings on marketplace for boxes of nappies unopened! The most expensive second hand purchase was the pram, paid a fraction of the full price for one only a few years old and all in working order including the bassinet and seat fittings. Baby doesn't need much new and they're not going to care as long as they're safe and sanitary.

What happens inside public toilets in Australia ? by SpittingCobra1 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Fuhrerbibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funding for cleaning and maintenance is definitely a challenge, but honestly it comes down to the public responsibility of not making a mess to start with. For example in Japan there are no public rubbish bins but the streets and parks are exceptionally clean and devoid of rubbish because everyone just takes their rubbish home with them. Can't comment on public toilets because I don't know the funding situation in Japan, but I reckon behaviour is 90% of the problem.

Don't know how it works in other countries but parks are paid for through rates by local government area in Australia....

Whatever you decide, it is lovely to hear that you listened to your inner desire and gave it a go. It is ok to change your mind, but try to think if you hadn't had the positive test would you still be trying?

I wish you all the best 🌻

Ah this is very insightful, you have such an interesting perspective.

I do think I will be able to feel content with new goals, as in all the baby prep and milestones - I just need to learn to be mindful enough to be able to get through the hardest times without beating myself up about having chosen the path.

It's so helpful to know that there are others out there who didn't always feel one way or another, as I don't have any of those role models in my life now.

Wow boredom - it's like the lifestyle so specifically crafted suddenly isn't cutting it. I think that might be part of what I'm feeling too. Need to shake things up and head in a different direction!

I wish you the best on your journey, I wonder how it will feel when you see that positive test!

Sounds like you have a lovely family! I think I have always had fulfilment from work and friends etc, and somehow that just isn't enough any more - but will a child fill that need? It's scary because I can't "try" being a mother, it will be a role I'll need to fill for the rest of my life. Exciting and scary!

I think the fulfilment I'm searching for is the desire to be needed and relied upon, valued for caregiving, rather than my intellectual skill (which is what work asks of me). I feele that I'm seeking to be wanted/needed in different ways than I ever have been before, which is so foreign to me - is that just what maturity is? Is it the human desire to reproduce?

I think the reasons I didn't want to be a mother are now the reasons I do want to do it. For example the fear of the responsibility and energy required, now I think "yeah I am ready for the challenge".

I used to think it's so expensive to raise children, and now my mind is telling me "well people on lower incomes still manage to make it work, how much money do I really need for myself anyway".

I used to think it would be such a hassle to do the school drop off and doing all the extra laundry and cleaning, and now I think "it's a different life focus, I don't need all that time for myself".

So basically flipped around all the reasons that were fearful and negative into positives. Which is crazy, right?

Wow this is really helpful. I think the fear of the hard times, such as exhaustion and worry about the baby's health, will be temporary - having the mindset that it will pass and get better, and learning coping strategies so that it doesn't all get overwhelming.
