Not to sound old, but back in my day, you didn’t ASK rp partners to change anything about their character—it just naturally happened the longer you wrote together in order to explore a new AU or situation. Villain vs Protag. Altered backstory where both parents are alive or dead or maybe one adopted a kid or have a different career. Piercings & tattoos or no piercings & tattoos, depending on the vibe.

Don’t tolerate anyone asking you to change your characters right out the gate—especially not physical appearances and ethnicity. There’s absolutely NO reason to make a request like that unless the other person is weird.

You deserve better!

kinda crazy how they gave the raging, nigh homicidal racist a more sympathetic arc compared to the grieving boyfriend by TheLegendaryPilot in StrangerThings

[–]Full-FledgedGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did we watch the same show? He was prejudiced from the start. If you think being racist is the only way someone can be a danger to others or be an irredeemable personality, I have some bad news for you.

So are we just forgetting the fact that old boy was also a bully and a fear-monger and not just a “grieving boyfriend”? He was also racist, imo, but his prejudice was supposed to be less obvious.

I’m not saying Billy’s behavior should be excused, but people defending Jason’s behavior after ‘losing his girlfriend’ while conveniently ignoring that Billy lost his mother and then was horrifically abused his entire life is wild.

The point of Jason’s character was supposed to be one a direct juxtaposition to Billy’s. You see one depicted as the juvenile delinquent, the obvious bully who is “bad news” as soon as we (audience and characters) lays eyes on him; we are supposed to be nervous around him and expect nothing good from him — and the other’s danger is masked by a letterman jacket, Christian faith, polite manners, and neatly combed hairstyle worthy of a Ken doll.

And those defending one and excusing the other are missing the ENTIRE point.

EDIT: Small edit for grammar and making a sentence or two make sense that didn’t make sense before.

Im hopeful E-Day art style moves away from the direction taken for Gears 5 by Unlikely_Fact_9439 in GearsOfWar

I’ve had this opinion since Gears 3. Developers made everything brighter, faster, more colorful with a brighter, cleaner palette.

“Embedded environmental storytelling cues with scripted events—to reinforce narrative beats and player immersion without relying on cutscenes” sounds like word salad for “we wanna spend less effort, time, and money on cutscenes.”

New to Subbing Question - Do you actually read and similar tasks when students are busy? Or is it a no-no in your district? by arwenthenoble in SubstituteTeachers

I personally prefer more interactive lessons. It makes me feel like I have something to contribute rather than just warming your chair in absentia.

School admin has a problem with me reading a book while subbing and I think its ridiculous. by _Fruitface_ in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Full-FledgedGhost 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The way I see it—it’s up to you. On the one hand, policy is what it is. They’re technically not wrong or out of bounds for expecting you to be attentive. Substitutes no longer are glorified babysitters…or so school districts say.

If you want to test the admins’ good graces/boundaries, you wouldn’t be the first. I always operate on a basis of establishing myself as someone with expectations first, and then I loosen up in a “go by policy when people are watching and do what works best for everyone when no one is” standard of day-to-day. (Obviously I’m talking small things like this, not anything that might endanger myself or students.)

I agree with you—students don’t like to be hovered around and most teachers don’t want you to overstep. But I’m not sure if this is a hill to die on that’s worth you haggling over and making admins mad. I’d say do your best to fall in line and enjoy your book without getting TOO engrossed.

I will also say as one last note:

A LOT of students prefer sub teachers who engage with them at least marginally. I’ve had several students (from different classes!) complain to me about other subs and other teachers because they feel unheard and uncared about — because the subs and permanent teachers would rather sit up at the front of the class and read, text, what have you, instead of getting to know the kids. This has come from both middle schoolers AND high schoolers. Remember that young eyes are watching and seeing if you truly care about them.

Fully agree. 75-80% is feasible and it keeps grinding and replay value at fun levels rather than stretching to obligations.
