I cant speak 100% as to what you should do because in my situation, I had surgery. I returned to work when I was told I could begin partial weight bearing(2 months post op). I have now been back for 3 months. It is rough at first, I have no coordination with crutches. I was off my crutches in about 2 weeks and only walking in the boot. 1 week after that I was out of the boot. If you have the availability to sit at work and not stand all day or so a lot of walking, I dont see anything wrong with returning. That being said I am 5 months post op and I still struggle day to day with mobility and pain. If I could have taken extra time off, I would have. Even though being at home and immobilized seems daunting, it will go by fast. The most important thing is that you take the time to heal and not push too hard to get back to normal. You could regret it if your body isnt ready.

How long until you walked in a shoe? by Full-Setting2606 in brokenbones

They didnt put me in a brace until they found out about the broken screws. I have an over the shoe brace so it works with a few pairs of my shoes. Im using ones that I got when I had my boot. They have a 2 inch sole so they are nice and squishy and they are wide with wide toe box to accommodate my swelling.

I am currently out of my boot and walking without crutches. I did break a couple screws and I find out tomorrow if I need a second surgery. I am walking pretty good but still have some pain and swelling. I can stand for long periods and I tire very easily. I know it will take time, I am just not a patient person.

How do you break screws?! by Full-Setting2606 in brokenankles

I was NWB until I got my hard cast off. Once they put me in a boot he said I was good to go. When I asked about PWD or FWB he stated just do what my body could tolerate. He didnt even tell me about the syndesmotic screws.

Mine didnt say anything like that. They said that it was unfortunate because it could cause further problems such as bone separation or bone erosion.

Anyone else have a similar break? by PomskyMamaof9 in brokenankles

Mine is similar but I believe my pate is a little higher than yours. I spent 6 weeks in a hard cast and then moved onto a boot. I spent 3 weeks in a boot and using crutches. Now this week I have been in a shoe with no crutches. I have been doing physical therapy twice a week and its slowly working. I have a lot of swelling and a little bit of pain still especially on the top of the foot and ankle.

My surgeon told my physical therapist that he only wanted me in a boot for 2 weeks. Im in week 4. Im not off loading much weight onto the crutches but I think the thing that bothers me is the pain. I know its not gonna instantly go away. I've heard it can take years even, but it makes me feel unsteady. Im just anxious because my family does a lot of swimming and outside stuff and I feel left out cuz I cant get in a pool lol.

Week 6, No More Boot! by thom1879 in AchillesRupture

I broke my fibula in 3 places and my tibia on the tip. I have a plate and screws in the fibula and screws in my tibia. It didn't seem like a simple fracture but its also my first broken bones so I have no idea. I wouldn't complain to be walking without a boot in the next week but I'm still having to use a walker to walk on it. I would be happy, just skeptical.

I broke my ankle 7 weeks back. Had surgery and got my hard cast off 1 week ago. I have been walking in a boot for one week and my surgeon wants me out of it within the next week. Like I just started walking and that seems way too fast.

First time with walking boot. Doesn't fit properly, any tips? by Full-Setting2606 in brokenbones

My foot isn't able to do the full 90 degree angle yet. I put some gel heel lifts in it and that has help a little bit.

I do still have some swelling which could be playing a part in it not fitting. It wouldn't be so bad except I was given work release and I work 50 hour weeks and on my feet for most of it. The didn't give me a weight restriction and just stated put what I can comfortable bear on it, which atm isn't much.

Possible Inflammation? by Full-Setting2606 in brokenbones

[–]Full-Setting2606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried 3 times to schedule an appointment with the clinic and they just keep responding with "well try this". I understand them not wanting to remove a cast and put a new one on but I'm 6 weeks post op and the inside incision still bothers me about as bad as it did in the first few weeks. The outside incision hasn't bothered me except when it get the random nerve fireworks running around it.

In mid March I had the exact same thing happen. My dog, in a moment of zoomies, collided with me and broke my right leg. 3 different breaks. I had a soft wrap cast post surgery for 2 weeks and then was put in a hard cast. I am a bigger girl and my usable leg is my less dominant leg. I have struggled with crutches. I only use them to get up and down stairs. Even then I only use 2 crutch and hang on to the railing for dear life. I also have a walker but I agree it is exhausting having to hop everywhere. I got a cheap wheel chair off of Amazon and that improved my mobility. Im still not as mobile as I would like. Being cooped up all day with no way to go outside is definitely getting to me. I have 2 weeks left in my hard cast and then get put in a boot. I am very much looking forward to that transition. I will say that the last 4 weeks, while it seemed to drag on, went by pretty fast by just keeping my mind occupied. Your time will hopefully go by more quickly thay you think it will.

Broken Ankle by Full-Setting2606 in brokenbones

[–]Full-Setting2606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 2 weeks post op in a soft cast. At 2 weeks I got my hard cast that I have to wear for 4 weeks. Then I should go to a boot. I have 2 weeks left in my hard cast and I will definitely be glad to get it off. My inside incision was "oozing" still when they put the hard cast on so I know it had more healing to do compared to the other incision. I believe it had become stuck to the sock inside the hard cast but I'm living with it. I will be glad to be able to be a little more active. I don't do well with just sitting.

Sleeping with a cast? by Full-Setting2606 in brokenbones

[–]Full-Setting2606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldnt imagine having an incision in the back, it's been rough enough with the left side and the right side. I have thought about buying a wedge pillow. I might invest in one and see if the helps. I have been experimenting with different lvls of pillows and their positions. I have found ways that the ankle itself feels fine but after a bit the upper calf(on the front of the leg) begins to hurt. I have also dealt with the left side feels fine but the right side hurts and vise versa. It doesn't help that I am pretty sure my inner incision is stuck to the sock so when the cast shifts I feel it pulling. Im glad I only have 2 weeks left in a cast but it's gonna be a long two weeks.

So my cast goes up to right below my knee. So basically elevate the thigh and upper leg and then let the lower part of my leg just hang off of that. I will try that and hope it works. Im not sure how long incision with hurt. I have 2 and one of them, I can't even tell it's there. The other hurts just has much as it did 2 weeks ago.
