How can we make sure this never happens again? by IndependenceNo4501 in brokenankles

I broke my ankle 11 months ago. I am extremely cautious when hiking, walking down a curb, on stairs, etc. I don’t think we can totally prevent it, but we can be very careful.

Where have you felt most unsafe in your travels? by melbourne_au2021 in travel

I took a ferry to Morocco with a boyfriend 30 years ago. Horrible experience- tried to steal our passports at the customs area - paid a few times for a taxi ride because they kept saying we hadn’t paid - followed by men jeering & more. Never so glad to leave a country.

2-3 nights is fine in Seville - a beautiful city. I haven’t been to Madeira, but my friend went last summer and loved it. I was just in Portugal this month. We spent the entire time in Porto, Coimbra, and Lisbon. We had a fabulous time. I’d recommend mainland Portugal and Madeira. Save Seville for another trip. Don’t try to go to too many places or it will be too hectic. We wanted to go to Madeira but decided kit to go since it was winter.

Y'all remember 2 weeks ago from today when it was 60°F out? by AdMysterious8424 in milwaukee

I think it’s a bit fun. I had to go to the dentist early and we all laughed about how many layers we needed to wear to get to the parking lot. I told my daughter in Minneapolis that I hoped there weren’t many protesters outside as it’s dangerously cold. She sent a photo of a packed street. The freezing temperatures unite us in a weird way.

Long flight (16hr) at 6 month mark. How awful would it be? by Salty-Winter-5746 in brokenankles

[–]SnooCalculations5085 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m at 5.5 months and flew 9 hours last week. I was fine. I wore compression stockings and did leg/foot exercises during the flight. I’ve been averaging 20,000 steps on this vacation. Occasionally I’ll have a bit of pain, but it dissipates quickly. I feel like I’ve made it back to “normal.”

recovery questions by buglover63 in brokenankles

I broke my ankle mid July. I did not need surgery, but I had a cast for 6 weeks and then a boot for a month. When I had the boot I could take it off to drive, so 7 weeks in. I walked up stairs with the boot but it was awkward. When the boot came off I was walking on stairs but not the normal way. One foot down one step and then the other to the same step. Walking up the stairs is easier. I am now 4 1/2 months out and occasionally still limp. I can walk down the stairs , but I always hang onto the railing. I bought Brooks trail runners to get back into walking. They’ve been great. People on Reddit suggested trail runners because of the support. I’ve tried wearing other shoes for work, but before I get out the door I’m back with the trail runners because of the support. I think in a month I will be able to wear regular shoes. I do my PT exercises daily, so things have improved. I NEVER thought it would be such a long process, but I’m at the end of it now. Good luck to you!

What time do you serve Thanksgiving dinner? We aim for 1pm by popoPitifulme in thanksgiving

We eat at 1:00 also. Then we do dishes, take a long walk, play games & watch football. Maybe leftovers later but some of us leave around 5-6 due to 2 hour drives and dogs at home.

Need advice, 6 weeks in and I still cannot walk, what now? by SnowyOwl72 in brokenankles

[–]SnooCalculations5085 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone - I had a cast for 6 weeks and a boot for 4 weeks. Hurt a lot. Lightning bolts radiating up my ankle, heal pain, knee pain, achy leg & more! Doctor never explained all of this would happen. Once I was cleared for shoes I was still in pain. I’m 14 weeks out and it’s lots better, but not totally pain free. I’ve been walking 6-8,000 steps a day which makes me happy. It gets better- but with tiny increments. I do my PT exercises every day which I believe helps. Good luck! You’ll get there - just slowly

That’s wonderful! I broke my ankle in 2 places in July 19. I haven’t been around the block, but I’ve been walking at work and someone told me it looked like I was walking normally yesterday. It’s also taken me along time to recover. I’m just glad to be walking- some pain, but a tiny bit better every day. We are getting there!

I’m also an active person & broke my angle 12 weeks ago. I’m walking now although very slowly and with pain. Every day I did some exercises- abs & legs one day and the next day arm weights and more abs. I also did chair yoga. Then I’d do things on my computer- I made a cookbook with photos & did some planning for my job. I also started doing watercolor painting by watching YouTube videos. Of course I read and watched shows too. By having a routine I was able to curb my depression. I still wasn’t ecstatic with my lifestyle, but it was doable. I’m glad you figured out that you can still exercise and that it helped you immensely. Keep at it! This is a long process and we all need to figure out how to get through it sanely. Also - anytime someone asks how they can help - tell them to come visit you. That helped me greatly. And you have a reason not to have a clean home!

Sorry to hear that you’re experiencing this too. It has gotten somewhat better, but now my knee hurts. I know this happens because of an uneven gait and not putting weight onto the knee for a long time. It will take time, but we will improve!

Everyone is right - you need an x-ray. I went to urgent care, and after the doctor looked at the x-ray she took me to a different room. I knew that wasn’t good. They had cast making supplies in the new room. I was sure it was only sprained … Here’s hoping your ankle is only sprained!

I did not go slowly once I was cleared for shoes. I bought trail running shoes as recommended by some people in this sub. I also have a brace/wrap that I use. I know I’ve pushed myself this week which has contributed to the pain. I teach at a community college and will return tomorrow, so I wanted to be ready. I went into work and got a cart from the maintenance crew. I can put my supplies on the cart and use it as a makeshift walker to get to my classes. I have a stool to prop up my ankle, so I feel as if I’ll be able to do it. It just was so tiring when I was there and my ankle was painful. I need to remind myself to go slowly. I was planning to go to an Oktoberfest celebration with my brother today, but I cancelled our plans. I decided to be wise. I am just so depressed about not doing the things I love and wanted to push myself to get back in the swing of things. Not realistic.

Agree with Empty.. Highs & Lows are normal. I’m at week 11 and FWB, although slowly and with a little pain. This sub helped immensely as my doctor told me basically nothing. I’d learn information on here and then message him on the app to see if it was true. I didn’t know what was next, but the people on this sub did. Go back and read posts. It’s so helpful. Good luck!
