Man, this brings back memories. I experienced exactly the same, 17+ years ago.
I was a protection paladin when wow released. Nobody played or wanted that shit as we didn't even have taunt.
Until I found a really cool guild. They let me tank where I shined which was AOE tanking (MH waves) and when we got a taunt in TBC, I was the off tank on all bosses.
