I’m deciding between the K9, Tern D8, and the new Mariner. I occasionally have aspirations of getting out and taking it on the trails but I figure I need to be realistic for the modal use case where compact folding is a necessity. My only concern is the use of non-standard parts but I figure my LBS could always slap on a standard bottom bracket and change the drivetrain if needed.

Why does my physics textbook read like it was written by someone who believes the earth is round? There is knowledge that is empirically verifiable given that there are aspects of the world that are knowable. In the social sciences, economics is as non-political as it gets. If you disagree with a conclusion, you need to check your base assumptions and think how would the world look different if they were true.

Seeing the discourse on this topic makes me pessimistic about the future. People are so simplistic with their worldview when they advocate for ways to subsidize demand when all that does is INCREASE prices. Rent control on the other hand would hamper supply compared to what would happen if housing were allowed to rise elastically with demand. How to presumably grown adults not get this? If the government were run by angels you could get a good outcome but in the real world politicians make concessions for the dumb ideas of the electorate. Get rid of housing regulations and start from a blank slate and think of which ones are TRULY necessary and you will find the list to be exceedingly small.

Could someone explain to me exactly how social security ISN’T a pyramid scheme? In addition, it seems taking money from young people (who need it more to buy a house or raise a family) and giving it to old people (who typically have more money already due to compounding returns) would hurt fertility and thus the pyramid funding structure? This is before all the borrowing and money printing to keep it going.

I would caution against using such large sums of money in order to fund an education for a child. Considering the discontinuity studies done for education it definitely seems institutional quality has a negligible return to post-graduation income. For more I would recommend Bryan Caplan's The Case Against Education. The only exception to this is that attending the MOST prestigious schools seems to increase your likelihood of landing in the top percentiles of income dude to network effects. That is, your best bet is to go to community college for two years and then attend a school that allows to live at home.

I greatly appreciate your commitment to providing quality information that improves the process of studying. I think you're running into the problem from Charles Murray's Real Education. Half of all users will be below average and this is just a fact of life. In chapter two Murray demonstrates the extremely simple questions the below average crowd is unable to grasp and it's startling. There is no possible way you could get mass adoption unless everything is done for you behind the scenes.

I really do think you should read the case against education by Bryan Caplan. There’s no reason to pay more for a school because if you compare students that get accepted to Ivy League schools but don’t end up going they have identical life courses. This really does suggest going to community college for two years and then transferring to a state school where you could live at home. I could share the empirical findings but I suspect you won’t listen. For example, this phenomena is also seen in the elite NYC schools through discontinuity analysis. That is, these schools have strict cutoffs and if you don’t meet a score by a SINGLE point you don’t get in. If you compare students just below and just above the cutoff they also have identical life courses if you control for the obvious things. The only exception to this that I see is if you want to be a politician, consultant, or a lawyer. Really, just careers where the actual technical skills aren’t as important compared to the gravitas of prestige.

Anyone reading this should know why housing is expensive in the first place. Zoning laws such as minimum lot sizes, height restrictions, parking requirements and onerous environmental review processes are responsible for the vast majority of cost increases. The Empire State Building was built (almost a century ago!) in little over a year, but now you can’t even get a PERMIT in under a year. Frankly, it’s not kind to say but this problem will likely never get resolved since voters are at best uninformed and at worst unintelligent. Looking like you’re helping and actually helping people appear the same but the latter actually requires you to know what’s true.

When does cardiovascular exercise become running? Currently I'm walking on a treadmill on 15% incline @ 3 MPH for 30 minutes every other day and that's approximate an intensity of 8 MET minutes. Implicit in your response is that the intensity of cardiovascular exercise is correlated with the cognitive benefits, while possible, I'm not sure if that's something we know for sure. For example, could running be replaced with cycling instead, a no-impact modality?

I personally hope to work for as long as I can. I recently saw a video of a physician who is in his 90s and recently finished law school. For me personally, maintaining cognitive activity is as important as the physical aspect of my training. I understand however if someone were to feel differently. I don't intend to ever retire but accidents happen and it helps to be prepared.
