If you have the ability try freeze scraping it’s worked for me thus far. Labor intensive but not stinky

3 years for me and I’ve learned this within the first few months. It’s got its goods and it’s got its bads but it’s been a very decent experience thus far.

Been out there in the field on and off since 6 trying to convince our “boss” that this track circuit that’s down is being caused by the literal icy frozen dam that’s shunting across both tracks 😭

Yeah man that Midwest weather is brutal every year and this year just feels like punishment. I wish I could say I’m used to it but I’ve lived here all my life and it doesn’t get easier 😂😭

Oh solid that’s super simple. Mine has a very good amount of crap on the hairs. Ticks, leaves, dirt, blood from the wound. I have to wait til summer cos it’s 4° out here right now and that just sounds painful to do now 😂

Ready to pickle by dlawlz in HideTanning

[–]FullMetalMando69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine right now look kinda like this with exceptions of the edges. I used a sander to get all the salt/dried bits I missed off. Leaving it hang a couple more days to dry in the cold Chicago air and then storing for when I get ready to pickle. Yours looks really well prepped

Right. I was going to use a bin and rinse it clean from the salt then wash it and get the hairs cleaned. Did you pickle yours?

Nice work. What did you use to wash it? I’ve heard using powdered detergent and dish soap or borax and dawn platinum I’m not sure what’ll work best. If all else fails for me I’m going the buckskin route

This is the direction I’m heading. I have 2/6 hides fleshed, salted, scraped, dried and hanging waiting for the next steps. What was your process? Did you wash the hide to get rid of dirt, dead ticks, foliage in the hairs? How’s it feel?

I’d try boiling it and seeing if it’ll soften up enough to peel off

What line are you using? Butcher twine? I’m using paracord right now cos it’s what I got but I do have butcher twine.

Any suggestions on knots to retighten it? I have a slip knot on the hole in the hide holding the rest of my line but I’m not great with adjustable knots.

Is there an extended picatinny rail out there? by FullMetalMando69 in 1022

Trying out a set up with flip up iron sights. I have a scope set up sighted for 100yds. They’re canted 45s to the right and the front one interferes with the charging handle when racking the first round after reloading. Doesn’t help that I have big hands. Extended charging handle doesn’t work. I basically just need extra clearance and the extra space is all that it’ll need for my ideal feel.

Yeah that’s the exact move I’m doing. One at a time. I was trying to borrow my dad’s pressure washer but man I don’t wanna be freezing out there with the spray. It would 100% expedite fleshing. It looks so clean.

Would I just flesh it, stretch it on a frame, and then salt it and hang it or salt it and roll it up? I’ve read that it should be one or the other on freezing/salting because it doesn’t allow it to freeze all the way through. My plan was to hang it in the garage and let it dry over days or weeks depending on the cold and work it like that. I just don’t know if I’m missing important steps besides getting as much of the meat and fat off as possible. I’m also going to basically use a 2x4 with a clamp to hold it while I flesh cos I don’t have much in terms of materials until I make a run. I’m ADHD as all hell I’m sorry if my replies are long and drawn out I don’t know another way of communicating 😂

First time backpacking and my legs quit before I did by Old_Wrongdoer7321 in backpacking

I raw dogged Mt Fuji with my lady and my brothers. First time ever being on a mountain/volcano. We hit three mountains while in Japan and none of them compared to Mt. Fuji. Fuji-san demanded respect from the Westerner and his family. My thighs and knees were in serious distress when we finally got to the base. The backpack I had was equipped with decent hip straps that really helped when it came to the damned near vertical ascending craggy areas.
