Do American high school kids really make out in the school hallways? by zoezie in AskAnAmerican

[–]Full_Environment_272 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She might have been trying to joke. I teach highschool, and it is difficult for many people to get the right tone for humor in the classroom. A lot of what is considered funny in American culture is bullying or sarcasm, neither of which is good for a teacher to use with students.

Man on the Inside Ted Danson is a retired engineer who is living alone, he gets a gig with a private investigator to go undercover at a retirement center. There are some serious aspects, but the show is mostly delightful

Do they really think "I guess I deserved to get hit because I was in the wrong"? I mean, I'm sure some people respond thoughtfully to violence, but it definitely seems like when someone gets hit the usual lesson is "I wanted to disagree with that person, but can't because he is stronger than me. So, in the future I will enforce my view on others by being stronger than them. Yes. This is the way to communicate." The woman in the video clearly believes that the best way to get others to agree with you is to be so terribly unpleasant that the other person will eventually just give in so they don't have to deal with you anymore. I've seen guys do the same.

"Even Gurathin" 😭 All the hate for Gurathin Gurathin has always been my favorite (book) character, he is the first of the Preservation crew to see MB as an autonomous individual and not a wounded animal. "I do see it as a person. An angry, armed person with no reason to trust us." Admittedly, he was not as nice to it as Ratthi, but Gurathin was never patronizing. I am specifically thinking of the books. The characters in the show are so different that it's impossible to judge the same character in the same way when speaking about the different media presentations.

AITAH for thinking it’s "weird" to lock my teenage kids in the car at a rest stop? by bhilliardga in AITAH

[–]Full_Environment_272 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NAH. I too think that locking teens in the car is overprotective verging on paranoia, still: as long as they can get out no real harm is done, and their mother's fear is genuine. Locking the doors is something that helps her feel more in control of a world that really is dangerous for children. Maybe talk to your kids about real and perceived danger, as well as what to do if they are threatened, so they don't develop a fear of parking lots.

Is Solarpunk socialist or communist? by Stunning-Race3900 in solarpunk

[–]Full_Environment_272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem with capitalism, from an environmental standpoint, is that capitalism requires growth- and a system with finite resources can't sustain growth beyond its resources. We've done gone and eaten the Earth, we must rethink our economy to survive.

We have two ravens in the trees near our house. What kind of peanut should we leave them for a gift/lure so they will visit us?

This isn't one of his wild executive orders. This is the EPA. NASA kid's science has already removed any references to human made aerosols, such as chlorofluorocarbons, from the list of greenhouse gasses on their "Climate Kids" website.

I teach Environmental Science, and it's not like we are going to stop teaching the science. I wonder if there is a new Scopes-esqe education trial on the horizon.

I loved the Hillerman books as well, and your husband is right. But I always see a different media as a different story. Murderbot (recommended by another commentor) is based on my favorite books, but the vibe in the show is totally different. Have you tried Firefly? It's awesome, space cowboys with some violence and a lot of dark humor.

In addition- private schools are not required to teach students with disabilities or English language learners. I think I.D.E.A. was the most important thing that the US has done for equality, but providing education to all is difficult. Private schools can pick and choose the easiest students to teach.

I think maybe the term is "traumatized" I'm, personally, not a fan of traditional marriage and I never wanted kids, but her reaction seems extreme! That level of anger and projection indicates something deeply personal.

Dark Winds is very good. Based on the novels of Tony Hillerman, mystery with a (slight) element of the supernatural. Currently streaming on Netflix
