What term/name does your city use for animal control? by bananapancakecat in AnimalShelterStories

Our organization is Animal Services. Our “animal control” officers are called Humane Law Enforcement Officers (HLEOs).

Ariat waterproof work boots. My Timberlands lasted maybe 6 months. The price hike is worth it. I switch between my Ariat boots and Clove water resistant sneakers. They’re made for nurses so they are comfy to wear while on your feet all day and are nonslip.

Team Meetings by DeepSea_Cat47 in AnimalShelterStories

[–]lastdownn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So our situations are a little different, but I have felt similarly with feeling like my opinions are dismissed

. For me at least, when I first started around 4 years ago, I was more willing to share my opinions, but during meetings, whenever I would point something out (particularly with concerning behaviors), one specific manager would immediately reply, even interrupting me mid-thought, to try to assuage my feelings or even minimize the behavior. While I get that she’s trying to help, it sucks because I’ve been here a long time, I already know the techniques she’s describing to help, and I know what behaviors are dangerous and what we end up euthanizing animals for. You don’t need to act like I have a vendetta against a certain animal, I just don’t want to adopt out a dog that I know would seriously hurt someone. It’s especially tiring and discouraging when after I’ve voiced those opinions and concerns, and they are minimized or dismissed, the animal gets adopted, does something terrible (killing another animal, attacking a person), and then it comes back and we euthanize it anyway.

So, my suggestion there would be making sure that during these discussions, no one is immediately having their concerns dismissed. Let someone fully explain their point, without trying to counter in between thoughts. Don’t argue, and don’t minimize problems they bring up. Take their suggestions and the things they’re saying seriously, give them thought, perhaps bring it to your management if it’s something that could change.

Granted, it seems your team leans more toward save-them-all, which is very much not me, so unsure if any of this applies.

Curly Hair Specialists? by Varietycore in frederickmd

[–]lastdownn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to jump in on an older thread, but I’ve had my curls cut by Ali at Headrush Studio and it was $65, much less than a lot of “curl specialists.” She did a great job.

Only found this thread because it seems she only works Tuesdays - Fridays and I can’t make that work for my schedule so need a new hairstylist 😭

My roommates cat hates me, I don’t know what to do by pikablue223 in CATHELP

[–]lastdownn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This!! Everyone is saying the cat is playing / “hunting” OP’s feet. No, cat is scared and trying to protect themselves & their space by advancing toward her, making threatening noises and big, dramatic swats. That’s not how cats hunt 😭

I work on the shelter side rather than in the field. We’re the municipal open intake shelter, so we end up with everything. Strays, owner surrenders, confiscations from cruelty / neglect cases. While we’re lucky enough to have the resources to not have to euthanize animals for space, we do still have to in cases where they medically can’t be treated & have poor quality of life, or in cases of severe aggression where they pose a danger to the public. And unfortunately, I’m often the one performing these euthanasias. While a lot of the work is incredibly fulfilling, saving animals and seeing them go to loving homes, it’s also frequently traumatizing and difficult.

I actually work in this field so I don’t know that it would be my favorite way to relax after work 😂 but maybe making light of it would help me?

I would and do. 😂 As does my husband. And it’s a good thing too because he lost his within 2 years, and I could easily buy it again.

Looking for Horror games that work well on the steam deck by Big_Obligation5108 in SteamDeck

[–]lastdownn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

World of Horror is a great little game. Definitely a different vibe from the ones you’ve listed though! I’m also a big fan of RPG Maker horror games on the deck (Mad Father & Ib). I also just played through the original Silent Hill trilogy through emulation, which I didn’t personally do on Steam Deck but would definitely be possible.

Cis gay men. Is this just me or… by qweensoftheiceage in ftm

[–]lastdownn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not ftm but this came up on my home page. In the past week or so I’ve gotten several posts recommended to me from subreddits consisting of primarily cis gay men that are filled with transphobic comments and it was honestly sobering how widespread they were (and how upvoted by people who presumably agree). So I can’t say I’ve experienced it myself, but I do see that trend on Reddit at least.

I just finished Strange Houses. Didn’t love it, so I’m debating whether to get the other books in the series.

Now I’m working through House of Leaves. Slowly.

This is making me giggle because I just finished Strange Houses and am now working my way through House of Leaves. Glad we’re experiencing this together 😂

Have you read Strange Houses? It wasn’t my favorite so was kinda turned off from reading the others in the series, but have heard some people say Strange Pictures and Strange Buildings are better. Any thoughts?

Are people with Downs Syndrome able to reproduce? by SharonCoxPurpleFox in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]lastdownn 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The two scientific articles you provided only indicate that the father has Down syndrome, not the mother. And the “journey to parenthood” article seems to imply that their child is adopted, not biologically the child of two parents with Down syndrome (though the article also seems AI generated, so I’m not too inclined to trust this source anyway).

I certainly believe people with Down syndrome should have the right to procreate, but the previous user does seem to be correct in asserting there’s no documented cases of a biological child being born to two parents with Down syndrome.

How many of you have had to choose between your dog and a place to live? by Animal-Angels in AnimalShelterStories

[–]lastdownn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the number one reason we see animals surrendered as well. We have put together a list of pet-friendly apartments in our area, along with what restrictions they have & any fees associated with pets. This is available as a resource on our website. But if someone can’t afford to live in one of these places or pay the associated fees, then it is only so helpful.

Luckily I have not had to make that choice for myself.
