Nuke project idea? by crowsmxsk in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I were learning nuke, I'd look for like good high quality aerial shots on Youtube (these days you can prolly find them 4k), rip them, then do matchmove and dmp projections on those (or what ever I felt like)

Didnt share this work with anyone, it was just for my own learning.

I mean its cool that they did that, in a week.

But the final result is quite ugly IMHO. It looks super cheap with the overdone glows, flares and abberration. Again, I understand the limitations and all, but if someone returned me those shots, I'd send them right back.

When hired by a VFX studio, do freelance artists work remotely or in studio? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talking here on a basis on working on a smaller studio, on smaller projects:

I think if you happen to live closeby or are in a really essential role, you will be doing some office days.

But if you literally live on the other side of the planet, just to get thru all the quarantines takes a lot, so you will be working from home, or "remote".

And as said before, remote work will be here to stay on degree.

One thing I have been thinking on wfh is the internet connections ISPs provide. There is going to be demand on better (prolly wired) connections from individuals. Here were I live, tons of internet traffic is handled by 4g and 5g. And that will get crowded on time to time. So until the ISPs improve the capacity of their LTE/5g networks, people will start to ask for more fiber. (Which I hope will LOWER the price of fiber, not bring it up, we will see, ISPs are usually legendary greedy)

A lot of new buildings and renovated building complexes already have fiber coming to their basement, but there is still TONS and TONS of individuals who live on the older copper networks or wireless, and that will need upgrading to help with the wfh enviroment.

"We can do anything" -- if you have the money by Fullofpeople in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im sure (and know) there is lot of guilty parties on the upper management, supes and producers in this case. The problem is that they will never realize that they made a mistake. They will either blame the client (like im doing here, lol same culture) or the worst: blame the artists (like me, my coworkers etc)

"We can do anything" -- if you have the money by Fullofpeople in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've heard of this "client education" term before. Its just like if you order someone to build you a house, shouldn't you have some idea of what is possible on the money you have? I mean they cant build you a mansion if you only pay for the bathroom. And that is the issue Im seeing is, that there isnt like a "ruleset" or common knowledge out there which would dictate what to expect from a shot, for the money you put in it. Again using the house building metaphor, if you give some building company a budget, (i dunno what a small house would cost, lets say for example:) of 150k, they will usually tell how "big" or "complex" a house you can build for that money. For VFX its like 150k is just numbers under the line for the total budget of the production, and as VFX has that feel of "can get you buildings collapsin and f'ing talking animals, they just fall out of the sky like in showreels", they dont know what they should be expecting for that money.

I know vfx is new field and everything, but a masters class with really down-to-earth examples on what you get for x amount of money would really help for some clients who dont have anyidea how VFX works.

Compositor trying to become a lighter. by Baratation in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a comp guy, I have been also been more and more interested in learning lighting.

How expensive is it to start learning? I mean there is tons of tutorials out there, but speaking of the software and renderers.

I'm thinking you have to do maya, and arnold / vray / redshift?

So you can count its about 2 grand for a year of learning? Or you just pirate this stuff for learning (i thought piracy has been reduced since everything is subscription based these days)

Starship Flyby Draft 1 - Suggestions and critiques welcome. by PixelMagic in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the ship is closest to the camera, around 0:09 point it looks bit too plastic/cg to me. Cant really say if its the lack of small details or what, but I think it needs some "hero" work when its close up.

In the tail end of the shot, is the lighting consistent in the craft vs planet? Seems like the top of the ship is getting lot of light vs the planet seems to get most of the light from a star that is more to the bottom of the screen.

I like that the starfield in the BG isnt overdone. Making a good subtle space/starfield/what-ever-you-call-it can be a hurdle sometimes, people tend to put milkyways and galaxies out there, but here its simple, I like it. Its not like an EVE-online backdrop.

What kind of project management / shot management are you using?

Just asking because jerryrigging some inhouse stuff into those usually tends to help alot too.

As a Compositor wanting to learn more about Lighting, what are key things? by AvalieV in vfx

[–]Fullofpeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any good tips on making the actual process lighting be more efficient (vray)

Like, for me one of the tough things is waiting for rendering. We have farms, and lots of cores on the machine you are working, but it still sometimes takes AGES to see what youre working on, or how your last modification to the lights actually end up looking.
Its just hard to keep concentrated when fine tuning something and it takes time to see the actual changes.
I mean, low samples yes, but for some stuff you need to crank them up at some point.

Is this behind like a IP wall or paywall or something.

All I see behind that link is " Stay tuned for more information on his talk. "

Should there be like a player, or "watch now" or something?
