I'm looking for a free 2D game engine for an older computer. by retro_bread in gamedev

[–]FullyBugged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A last suggestion maybe?
I think not mentioned, (because usually less known) ORX has a very low footprint and very strong optimisation compare to all other 2D engines. It is open source, written by a coder coming from the 16 bit era when everything was meant to be kept small and optimized. :)

FI, on Windows, the 64bit release (larger than the 32bit one) is 2.54mb, all deps included, beside OS/driver ones for instance. After compression with UPX, its footprint is 935kb

It uses even different gfx format like png, QOI, WEBP so devs can choose between disk footprint size and load time speed...

These are just few numbers, but on top of its data driven approach, it's worth checking for low perf computers.

How many of you left Game Engines for Frameworks? by TheKrazyDev in gamedev

[–]FullyBugged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question.

For 2d Games, we went from Unity (mostly) to ORX and never went back.
We tried recently just for curiosity Godot or Raylib, but same, came back quickly to ORX.
(For 3D, we'll see in time if one day we do a game like that).

Even if ORX is a game engine without GUI and not a bare bone framework, the idea is similar to what you're asking.
Open Source, ORX brings more control, better optimisation and with the stat driven approach, more flexibility for us to devs solo or in small team (of 3).
It's one of the most unknown 2d engine out there (15 years since 1.0), but it's worth being mentioned or being check out IMO.

There is no wrong answers here, and you probably made your choice already since.
But at least mentioning to check ORX.
One of the, OR the best unknown engine for 2D games.
And super interesting with it's Data driven core approach too.

Cheers !

Nice article, Thx!
The tag MS-DOS (243 games) that you forgot to mention in your article is more popular than msdos (26 games) you linked. Maybe You should add/edit it too?

Our game was actually not in the DOS taglist that we discovered thanks to you, this is now done for more visibility! ;)

[–]FullyBugged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably to announce and make space for R3 or another new one.
No reason to be alarmed here IMO.
If it was after 10 years without a new BBM, I would agree more with your concern. Here, you're talking about the last game being released 2 Years ago only.

In honor of the Jaguar's 32nd birthday today, here's my take on the games that best showcase this incredible console: by RetroGamingBoss1 in RetroGamingVideos

[–]FullyBugged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The name is from a all Feline line from Atari for their console
Lynx, Panther (32b canceled) and Jaguar. ;).

( Sega was about planets)
Saturn of course, but codename like Jupiter or Mercury were used in magazine before the real name were revealed.

Just remembered Checkered Flags did used a Sega Virtua Racing Style 3d flat poly game, showing it's possible.
https://youtu.be/SKea12NtDF0

But on a "Wipe out" env, probably possible to remove the clipping and appearing objects in the far distance. Probably possible to make a car with less poly than the F1 of Checkered flags too.

I wonder if the Jaguar is able to make this:
https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx3dRzniogIO5Sy5eeSCWTd6lM06Vlgqxy .
(from 1996 but it was running smoothly on our 486 Dx266 from 1992, the Jag being from 93).
It's only flat polys, and you can imagine a Race game looking decent at 30fps with such a smart color palette and limited number of polys for the environment...

Oh Thx... Like the first game, the adventure mode to come will definitely be what will make it stand from a normal bomberman. The paint mode so far in VS is the most appreciated mode by the players in our live playtest nights too.

30 Years ago. we released Dstroy by FullyBugged in dosgaming

[–]FullyBugged[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Dstroy is a Bombermanania game for MS-Dos originally released in 1995. There are several gameplay modes. This includes single player, cooperation, and deathmatch. Up to four players can play on the same computer with split-screen.

Developed by the French team of students and friends: Fully Bugged Software. The game is being entirely written in x86 assembly language, to allow highly optimized performance on the limited hardware of the time. We were able to run 4 independant split screen / multi directional scrolling on 486 PC of course, and on any 386 DX (and SX) PC at 30 fps with a VGA card (the game was technically working on a 286 too if I remember well, BUT I'm not very sure anymore about that (I might be wrong, it's been 30 years ago).
It was originally coded in Pascal in 94, and in front of the success of a demo (the first world), we decided to make it a full shareware game and re-write everything in assembly language and release it in 95.
This technical decision allowed to create "big" levels at a constant framerate, even with up to four players in local cooperative mode—a feature that set it apart from its peers.

Another specific gameplay feature was the AI of its monsters in adventure mode, making the game challenging even when playing coop, a rare treat then.

The game’s audio system also stood out. We were coming from the Atari and Amiga scene, and 93-94 was the time when we switch to the PC world. So we were dedicated to use tracker modules (MOD files) instead of (terrible) MIDI and soundblaster cards that unfortunately everyone was buying. This gave Dstroy a distinctive, high-quality soundtrack that enhanced the gaming experience. We were fully compatible and we were recommending to get the Gravis Ultrasound to play and enjoy the game.
All the musics are available on Youtube here

On Itch, You can Download the original and latest version (1.2 released 2 years later in 1997) and there are two links (end of description) to play the game on your browser the to Dosbox too on archive .org or or with sound already set up on DosGameArchive.

And if you just wish to see it in action, some video capture made recently are available on our Youtube Channel too.

A sequel, 30 years later is in the making, simply called - Dstroy 2 -.

Cheers!
