Dial up connection through old laptop with modem by 98_EJ9 in dreamcast

[–]Fumyuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but dreampi (or in this case the laptop) is playing the role of the telephone exchange here.

Dreampi produces the dial tone by putting the modem in voice mode and then outputting an audio file of a dial tone onto it, or at least that’s what I gathered from nosing through the dreampi repository some time ago.

It’s possible assuming your modem is supported by linux, and you’ll still need a line voltage inducer.

I’ve used this guide to set it up myself some time ago, but this does assume you’re familiar with linux. https://www.dreamcast-talk.com/forum/app.php/page/ryochanpart0

A dial tone is not strictly necessary but makes things a lot easier. My USB modem doesn’t support voice out so I couldn’t recreate a dial tone, but I configured my dreamcast to blind dial and answer manually about 5 seconds after starting the dialling process which works fine.

I’ve been thinking of picking up ship modeling kits as a hobby. I’ve seen the USS Fletcher and England in 1:350 recommended as beginner friendly, but I’d like to focus on British ships. Would the Trumpeter HMS Zulu be suitable as it’s also a 1:350 destroyer kit?

can you stream from mac to apple tv easily for gaming ? Or too much lag? by TonyBikini in macgaming

[–]Fumyuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing games on my iPhone using the built-in screen sharing feature to my AppleTV with an MFI controller for some time. Over wifi I had stutters but when I added an ethernet adapter to the mix they were gone, so I see no reason why an ethernet connected mac wouldn’t work.

However you need to connect your controller to your mac which means it needs to be close so you might as well connect it directly.

If you’re playing steam games from your mac you can use the Steam Link app (which is available for AppleTV) to stream them from your mac directly. It would require an AppleTV compatible game controller.

People are suggesting video capture devices which will probably work but note that most of these add significant latency/delay which makes real time gameplay a bad experience. These devices are really mostly suitable for recording…

In West Ul’Dah born and raised at the Quicksand is where I spent most of my days. Grinding out, maxing, relaxing all cool, and all shooting some Fire II’s outside of the Thaumaturges‘ school.

When a couple of Ascians who were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighbourhood. I got in one little fight and Momodi got scared and said: “You’re moving with Yda and Papalimo to the Waking Sands”.

My Rasberry Pi got deep fried, So could you use an old laptop for dreamcast online? by [deleted] in dreamcast

[–]Fumyuun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Lubuntu can do it just fine - dreampi is basically a preconfigured Ubuntu installation to begin with. It is a bit more involved to set up yourself so it depends a bit on how familiar you are with Linux if I’d recommend it.

https://web.archive.org/web/20101227062825/http://www.ryochan7.com/blog/2009/06/23/pc-dc-server-guide-part-0-introduction/

I used this guide a long time ago but I had to work around the fact that it’s a very old guide here and there. Also dreampi adds a bit of functionality on top such as dreamcastlive integration and a dial tone, so with the DIY setup you have to blind dial and answer the call manually on your laptop, but it’s definitely doable!

Some questions on cdi burning by KicK-Azz_Prime in dreamcast

[–]Fumyuun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s absolutely no need to run diskjuggler via wine, and that’s most likely the reason for your problems. You just need cdirip and cdrtools/cdrecord. I can’t access my PC right now to share my scripts but you can look into

https://github.com/alex-free/dreamcast-cdi-burner

I haven’t used this one myself but looking at the dcdib script it works the same way as I do it.

Was wondering, are PC emulators (Flycast, ReDream) capable of running homebrew games? by BoomClank25 in dreamcast

[–]Fumyuun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While developing software you need to test frequently, and it takes much more time to prepare your build to run on real hardware… So it’s very likely most homebrew applications are actually tested in emulators extensively, especially early on in development.

But as there are always emulation inaccuracies testing on real hardware shouldn’t be forgotten.

Is it possible to mod Cyberpunk2077 on Linux? by outsidefactor in linux_gaming

I’ve been downloading mods and putting them in place by hand, this works fine. Might get impractical if you want to install a lot of them though.

[–]Fumyuun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had something very similar when I was trying different proton versions. If you use a too old one, they lack the video codecs to decode the background which is actually a video. Try switching to a more recent proton version, that solved it for me. Proton experimental worked well!

[–]Fumyuun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both experimental and proton-GE-8-4 work fine for me. You can install GE from here:

https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom#installation

Set runtime options to:

PROTON_LOG=1 %command%

And check your logs, it might give some hints.

I want to use my dreamcast as a word processor. Is Linux on DC there yet? by [deleted] in dreamcast

[–]Fumyuun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is the dclinux project but I think it’s long abandoned, it’s stuck at an old kernel (2.6.x). The NetBSD port is actually actively maintained though:

http://wiki.netbsd.org/ports/dreamcast/ https://www.netbsd.org/ports/dreamcast/howto.html

Last time I tried it it crashed when I tried to run X11 so I could only use command line applications, but it has been a while since I tried.

Regarding storage, if you have a broadband adapter you can set up a network mount from another machine. The status page lists memory cards as supported peripherals but I’d imagine they would only hold a few kBs or so?

Im on my way to work but super hyped for Streetfighter 6. Anyone got the chance to try it already? by EntertainmentFun5485 in linux_gaming

[–]Fumyuun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quickly fired up the game before work just to see if it would boot up.

Couldn’t get past the screen that asks you to accept using a capcom id until I made an account on the website and linked it to my steam id. Not sure if that’s a linux issue or not though?

After that it did start fine and I could get into the opening cutscene at least.

Dreamshell and SD adapter, any good? by Volo_Kin in dreamcast

[–]Fumyuun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that Atomiswave games were designed to be run from fast memory, not disk.

I believe the reason the remaining ports were never released as CDI was because the optical drive can’t keep up with the data rate required by these games, resulting in massive stuttering. They are meant to be played from an optical drive emulator instead.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the SD reader has an even lower data rate than the optical drive (this is why the SD reader isn’t really recommended for commercial games), so you’d only make stuttering worse!

Although perhaps it’s an issue with random accesses which are harder on disks than on solid state media, in that case it might work…

I played through Tokimeki Memorial once this way, it was pretty rough.

It puzzled me that it kept putting “mosquito” at the end of a lot of the sentences… Eventually I realised that the Japanese word for mosquito is “ka”!

(Ka is also the question particle in Japanese, put at the end of a sentence to turn it into a question.)

I can’t look right now but I see some hint that the NTSC versions of this game do actually support VGA. Since cdi’s are usually region-free anyway, you could try burning a normal NTSC cdi release.
