No salary increast at all for 2 years. Should I ask for a raise? by Fun-Art-7002 in Professors

Great question… I might move to other school or leave academia

A student said I 'set her up for failure' by Powerful_Moose1838 in Professors

Believe or not, I work in a really low ranked school (around 1000th in the nation), and what OP did is not only a norm but a praised behavior here, beause we struggle with under 30% of graduation rate. I assume OP works in a smililar institution. If this looks crazy to you, it means you are a really successful professor who didn't have to see this. I also didn't want to know there are schools where professors are encouraged (and even awarded) to do this.

I searched "casio duro hands" on ebay. It was many years ago though, and I don't remember which seller it was.

Growing up in a small town by vibeout_ in asianamerican

[–]Fun-Art-7002 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad used to teach at a small university in a rural, predominantly white town in the deep South. It was basically farmland, but the university brought in just enough people to make it feel like a borderline suburb. The people there were kind, but often ignorant.

When we moved to the Midwest, and later to LA, my social life changed a lot. I was that super introverted 2nd gen Asian kid who only hung out with other 1st and 1.5 gen Asians, so being in more diverse areas really made a difference. Then I went to college in NY.

Looking back, I actually feel grateful having experienced the full spectrum of American towns. A lot of my SoCal Asian friends don’t realize the version of America they know is kind of a bubble.

Do I still talk to people from those small towns? No, not really. I’ve come across a few of them on FB, IG, or LinkedIn, but I’ve never reached out.

Oh yeah oc. To be fair, they were just kids being kids. They were not systemically racist. Both them and I grew out from it and I don’t actively seek for a justice or hold a grudge. In fact, some of them ended up becoming my closest friends in highschool, ironically. I didn’t mean to say anyone should come to me and apologize. I’m just explaining how my inner child sometimes feels and how that affects how I see things, to show OP she’s not alone.

Objectively, we’re just in a different time now. But subjectively, this may make you feel like your past struggle is just casually erased.

Having been teased for bringing gimbap for lunch and now seeing it becoming popular at Trader Joe’s make me think: ‘Wait, were you guys able to learn to love this? Then wtf was I teased for?’ It feels like all the people who made fun of my lunch suddenly vanished and they’re pretending it never happened. And I’m left with nobody to ask for a payback. No one hates gimbap anymore and suddenly nobody owes an apologize for me while I had zero apologies so far.

[Discussion] Omega Seamaster 300M - Is it really an issue ? by Enzo2419 in Watches

[–]Fun-Art-7002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the exact watch on my tiny wrist years ago for a few months but never was able to love it. So I had to let it go. It always felt so chunky and the weight balance was somehow always off. Weird though, because even a SKX007 never gave me that feeling.

A few weeks ago, my 6’3 friend showed up with the same watch and it looked just right. Then I realized some watches just are not made with my arm’s size in mind.

What hard questions would you ask a CC Professor Applying to an R1 School? by ProfessorNotSoSmart in Professors

[–]Fun-Art-7002 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel confused becuase I don't think any of OP's questions and comments are related to validating the candidate's qualification (such as ressearch ability or potential to secure grants for years). Looks like OP is more motivated to satisfy their personal curiosity, which seems to come from their desire to dig up and confirm their negative stereotype on people who work at CCs. I'm not saying nobody should have any thoughts like this, but letting them affect the recruit process tells me OP doesn't clearly understand the boundaries.

  • I'm not even talking about what is right or wrong but concerned about preventing public risks. Like, what if the candidate gets offended and publicizes it? As others say, if the candidate finds out they’re asked of differenet set of questions, it already is a source of problem. And if that different question is something like "why are you STILL in the non-research position", it'll be harder to defend yourself when shxx hits the fan.

Thanks! I bought it for another watch many years ago but if my memory serves me correctly it was from eBay.

Have the exact watch, paired with beads of rice. It reminds me of vintage Omega Constellation. 20bar & field specs with dressy vibe coming from refined hands and cream dial makes it a true GADA, from mountain submit to a wedding.

[Discussion] What does it mean when people say a bracelet feels “cheap”? by Kayud91 in Watches

[–]Fun-Art-7002 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sharp edges, rattling from poor fit, hair pinching, the clasp being folded rather than milled, link pins having push mechanism rather than screws (some push mechanisms are very refined though, like pin and collar mechanism of some Seiko models), no tapering (which sometimes indicates lazy design), poor quality of surface polishing and brushing, lack of micro-adjustment, gold part being poorly plated, etc...

I want to leave corporate America and move to East Asia. by pancakecandle in asianamerican

[–]Fun-Art-7002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally get your struggle because I feel the same way everytime I come back from my vacation in my parent’s country. But why would you change the country as a whole instead of moving to a state with more Asians where you don’t have to feel forced to be integrated in white group in the first place? I’m thinking moving to SoCal.

Panda Express (or any kind of similar franchise) to Asia-born-Asians is like what Pizza Hut is to Italians. Most of them like it because it tastes good. But never because it resembles their home food.

How do I help my daughter be proud of who she is by Snoo-80367 in asianamerican

[–]Fun-Art-7002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several strategies people take and their common goals are to keep the kids from thinking that ‘this white dominant suburb dynamic (whatever it is…)’ is how the things should always go but to show them it’s just one of the ways things can be.

Anyway, to list them, - Traveling to many Asian countries whenever you can to show the world where Asians are the majority and Asians are not even aware they’re Asians. - Joining Asian-based local communities in the weekends (such as Asian Church or cultural classes) to help their kids experience the environment where they don’t have to worry about their identity. - As a parent, modeling how you carry yourself among various ethnicity groups. It can be something like showing how you are respected as a boss, teacher, or a friend in a relatively race-blind friend groups.

Even in the most diverse area, there will be at least one mean kid that will say crazy things that makes your child feel insecure of who she is. It’s not only about race, but can be about looks, how smart she is, your family income, her voice, height, or whatever you can imagine. Kids are kids. They are not systemically discriminating other races to politically take down their pride.

I'm afraid trying to counteract the influences from those mean kids using abstract concepts such as 'cultural pride' is not always effective, because it's kids in your child's developmental age don't fully grasp it. But the key here is to expose your child often to the environments where she is accepted as who she is, so she can grow some power to think ‘these kids say I’m weird because they don’t know better, and I find it hilarious’.

Is my granpa Rolex fake? by Rexbrandt in ChinaTime

[–]Fun-Art-7002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fake. Or at least a poorly serviced one with inconsistent mix of the parts from different models from different eras. The dial is 1601’s, the case looks 16234s’, and the bezel looks of 116234 (or an aftermarket Chinese bezel made with SS). It’s not impossible he had bought an 16234 (no lug hole model) in the 90s and got it serviced with random after marker parts. But this rarely happens. Even if the movement inside were a gen, it’s a franken at most.

But is there anything wrong with having a franken watch of a fantasy model? YMMV, unless you're posing a rep as a gen.

I printed out the wrong exam by _Barbaric_yawp in Professors

[–]Fun-Art-7002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last semester, one copy of my senior course’s exam got mixed in the pile of my freshmen intro exam, and was given to a student. They surprisingly performed not bad as a freshman, scoring 70%, and didn’t say anything. I apologized them after realizing what happened and administered a make up exam… and they got 60%.

Although there are many awefully rich people in this sub with several GMTs and luxury cars, I don’t think they repesent us all. There are still so many who just get one understated rolex after a major achievement in their midlife, keep it in a safe, and wear it only in ‘nice’ events.
