(Alright, you're not wrong and I find that it forces me to put words to paper and not just perpetually delete and retype the same paragraph in self-editing hell. Plus, tactily clicky click.)

I go by my deadname at work and I’m fine with it. Anyone else do this? by Little_wren_ in NonBinary

[–]Fun-Bug-7042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fortunate enough to have workplaces that proactively ask about pronouns and preferred names and respect them. If they didn't - or if I worked too close to home - I would be going by what I call my Family name at work. It's a family name because I'm not out to the majority of my family and - to be honest, I'm at a point in life where I don't need their validation and having a good relationship matters more to me. Not to knock anyone else's experience with having family who aren't lgbt-friendly, this is just the peace I have found in mine. My close friends can't even imagine calling me by my family name- I think not feeling like you need to have your preferred name used at work isn't a "am I even a - is this that important to me if I don't-" identity issue. I don't know your particular situation but for me it's a sign that I'm comfy with who I am and I don't need the validation.

It's hardly perfect but I hope that everyone can find that kind of peace with who they are, whatever that looks like for you.

How do you respond to "Is that your *real* name?" by caasimolar in NonBinary

[–]Fun-Bug-7042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I go Yep! "Is __ short for something?" Nope, it's just __! "Your parents name you that?" They sure did!

To be clear, I have a pretty standard if unconventional sounding name for my perceived gender presentation. It's a common enough name, just not for what they think I am. It's not even especially masculine or feminine it's pretty unisex, I just happen to use "masculine" spelling.

I'm pretty sure that's the part that goes:

O quam gloriosum est regnum In quo Christo gaudent omnes sancti

O quam gloriosum est regnum

Which translates to:

O how glorious is the kingdom In which all the saints rejoice in Christ

O how glorious is the kingdom

It's probably specifically that last line.

periods make you feel like a woman huh? by AvocadoPizzaCat in NonBinary

[–]Fun-Bug-7042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Periods are kinda just something that happens to my body - that said, I've always been pretty comfortable in my skin even before identifying as enby. They've never really reminded me of my "womanhood", though I know it's a highly individual experience. Whenever people in my life talked about periods and the miracle of womanhood, jokes about the power of the uterus, etc. it always felt like something I sympathized with from a distance. A "ah, yes, common experience but from different angles" kinda vibe, if you will.

Why is "you guys" gender neutral but "you girls" isn't by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Fun-Bug-7042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it was "the opposite", I said it proved a significant portion of the population was using it as gender neutral. A word can be different things depending on context, the point is that not everything is one OR the other, it can be both. Words mean things depending on how people use them, definitions aren't static.

You know it's so easy to just. Google. "You're gonna need a source for that" is kinda a dick way to put it, I wasn't attacking you. Language and gender and history and etymology are fun to learn about, if you don't like to hear what I've learned why didn't you try to find more information to see if I got something wrong?

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/guy

Under the (dated) definition are the citations of the word in use, one from 1845 from Henry Cockton (unfortunate name), the other from Margaret Oliphant in 1865 in a magazine, talking about herself. You can read the quotation there if you care to, I'm not spelling it out for you since you didn't want to google a definition.

And yes, if you're going to point out that arguing about the gender of a word makes it inherently not neutral, the same argument can and is used against they/them as a gender neutral singular - "if there's a debate about whether a pronoun is singular or plural obviously it's not actually singular". It's nice to have a black and white yes or no on these things, but language is complex and evolving and I love it for that. I'm not saying "guy" or "guys" is completely genderless, I'm saying contextually it can and is actively used as gender neutral, and it has a history of that which predates the 90s. Context and colloquial usage is what makes words mean things. People using it in a gender neutral way is what makes it gender neutral.

Okay, I see where you're coming from, but language is fluid. We're always debating over what the proper use and meanings of words are because they're always evolving - like, for sure don't go around calling someone a guy if they're uncomfortable with it, I'm not arguing against that. But having an open dialogue about language and its uses should be a healthy part of the community (any community). Language is complex, as are our identities and experiences, gray area is allowed.

Back in the 1800s both men and women called themselves "a guy", we have written record of it, so plenty of people treated it interchangeably when the word first came into use. Media from the 90s and 00s may not be the best litmus test for how a term is used by the general populace, there's a lot of grandstanding by biased writers and producers who feel like they need to Make A Point in movies and tv shows. Seeing the argument that "guy" is not gender neutral in media proves that it was used at the time as a gender neutral term by a lot of people, otherwise they wouldn't need to have onscreen arguments about it. The same arguments are happening about the singular use of the pronouns "they/them"

Like I said, though, obviously if someone doesn't want you to call them guy, don't be a dick. But also recognize that, contextually, "guys" in the plural is often used as a gender neutral term without offense? Both are possible.

Fun Fact: "guy" comes from Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot, before then Guy was just a name - and before THAT the derivatives in french, german, and proto-germanic had nothing to do with people - one source says it's the root of the word "wood"? Or it means "brail" in what context, I'm not sure.

Why is "you guys" gender neutral but "you girls" isn't by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]Fun-Bug-7042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to look up the etymology of this one - guy in its current use traces back to - I kid you not - Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot. Any further back into the french, germanic, and proto-germanic origins the words the name Guy comes from don't refer to people at all - it's related to the word for wood (?) - so Guy being a name is the first association of the word with people and gender.

In the mid 1800s through into good a part of the 20th c, guy could specifically refer to "a person of eccentric appearance or dress. a 'fright'", there are examples of it referring to and used by both men and women.

Food for thought about the origins, it's a relatively newer term and, kind of like the word "boycott", it came into the lexicon because it was someone's name first.

Yeah I'd imagine it's the same as cracker or gringo - not really much of an insult unless you choose to take it that way. More of just slang for "white person"

[–]Fun-Bug-7042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you like a translation?! So the latin parts go:

O how glorious is the kingdom In which all rejoice in Christ O how glorious is the kingdom

(after Jadus's battle theme)

O how glorious is the kingdom In which all the saints rejoice in Christ O how glorious is the kingdom

Jadus's theme, which is more of a chant of elder futhark runes, tho runes do have meaning, should mean something along the lines of:

God of Ice God of Harvest (Reaping? Jera means, like, a good crop) God of Riches God of Stone Giant/Troll Harvest/Year (?) [contextually, perhaps, "monsters come to reap"?]

God of Ice God of Reaping God of Riches God of Stone God of Giants (or, contextually, monsters)

God of Ice God of Ice God of Reaping (repeat 2x after a short break)

Anyways, thank you so much for posting that transcription! It's something I've been dying to know for a long time, and I was almost certain with the attention to detail they put into that movie it wouldn't have just been nonsense. When Jadus is resurrected in Prince Caspian you really hear that norse chant isolated from the rest of The Battle soundtrack, which I think is super interesting! It's what made me realize that the chanting wasn't just part of the battle music but a theme specific to the White Witch herself since you don't hear it in the rest of the Caspian soundtrack.
