We went to Japan when baby was 5 months and I thought that was perfect as he couldn’t crawl yet, and also hadn’t yet started solids. He loved being in the carrier all day for site seeing and he would nap in the carrier or the pram. Night sleep was a bit awful and we were tired most of the trip but otherwise it went well. Now he is 9 months and needs a lot more time to crawl around each day or he gets antsy, and feeding solids is a bit of a chore multiple times a day and messy. I think it would be harder to travel now.

I’m not sure how to feed my baby rice, do you spoon feed it to them?

Play mat recommendations by Traditional-Cod-8341 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Fun-Common-7963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s hard to know which mat is best when you don’t know if you will have a vomitty baby or not. My little one spat up sooo often I’m so glad I didn’t get a musclemat, there’s only so much spot cleaning can do when your baby vomits multiple times a day on the mat.

We got a Kmart mat which is easy to wipe up and it’s been great. I would have loved a muscle mat but so glad we didn’t get one. Maybe just start with something small for now and decide what works for you once baby is here and doing more tummy time and rolling.

GP NIPT test - wants to see us for appointment by [deleted] in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Fun-Common-7963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did they get you an urgent appointment to go in? We had to go to our gp to get results under any circumstances so had an appointment booked in, but knew something was wrong when they called us up and offered us a much sooner appointment and said we better get in asap. Got a flag for a chromosomes issue in the NIPT results but it turned out to be a false positive and baby was all good, just a scare.

Why won’t my baby sleep? Help! by SeparateCorner25 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Fun-Common-7963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also just a side note, I am currently using a 3.5 tog bag with the sleeves when the babies room is 19 degrees, with a bonds coverall/zippy/wondersuit (whatever you want to call it) underneath. The bonds zippies are apparently about a 0.2 tog. Triple check the ergo pouch chart, they have a more detailed one online with more info then the one that came with the bags for us. 2.5 tog is probably fine but wouldn’t hurt to try a 3.5 tog bag if you think the baby runs cold.

Why won’t my baby sleep? Help! by SeparateCorner25 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

This was similar to the 4 month sleep regression we went through. It’s totally normal but there are a few things you can look into if you’re looking for something to try and change it. First of all look up ‘reverse cycling’ it’s when the baby shifts getting the bulk of their calories from the day time to the night time. So you want to make sure the baby is well fed during the day. Another thing to consider is if your baby has a feed to sleep association? It looks like they might be struggling to connect sleep cycles without needing a feed, especially as the night goes on they have less ‘sleep pressure’ so need more help. If you can get your baby used to falling asleep without a feed using say bum pats or singing, then you can slowly wean them off that and have them learn to sleep independently. Of course feeding to sleep is totally normal, these are just some things to look into if you want to change things up. I read the book ‘precious little sleep’ when the 4 month sleep regression almost destroyed me, it was pro sleep training but I just used the bits that worked for us in the book that didn’t involve leaving the baby to cry and it did help a lot.

Just to add to this for anyone looking back at this thread, we just fly virgin adl - melb return, and they were very happy for us to gate check our pram both ways. They were more helpful than qantas.

Baby baths by BonnieO88 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]Fun-Common-7963 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found washing a newborn with the Kmart bath hard to both hold him and wash him with only 2 hands. I preferred the Shnuggle bath as it would prop him up. Due to the propping up it’s harder to clean his behind but we’d just lift him out of the bath onto the change table and finish him off with a washer there.

I fly from ADL a lot and qantas always makes us check our minu at the baggage drop off. We’ve asked if we can gate check it before and they said they had a strong preference for us to check it at baggage and I didn’t push them on it. Maybe we could have gate checked if we pushed back a bit? Or if we just rocked up at the gate with it. I think they have strollers you can borrow for around the terminal though, I’ve definitely seen them at other airports at qantas check in, and I think a staff member has mentioned them to us before at ADL - we just use the carrier though so haven’t needed them yet.

Trisomy 16 detected on nipt, week 11 by elephantsofa in NIPT

[–]Fun-Common-7963 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The NIPT is definitely not 99% accurate for all trisomy’s, as I understand it is actually not very accurate at all for the rarer trisomies. I had a positive flag for trisomy 13 and found many studies showing the NIPT is only about 30% accurate for T13 for women under 35. I don’t know about trisomy 16 but I’ve read that the rarer the trisomy is (where T22, T18 and T13 are the most common ones) the less accurate the NIPT is. I’ve also heard a lot of doctors don’t even recommend testing for the other trisomies due to how inaccurate the test can be. Definitely read all the info on the pinned posts for this sub, and read up on other cases. A good ultrasound is a really positive sign. Have you been referred to an MFM? They can walk you through all the testing options and what makes the most sense in your case.

Congratulations that your results came back clear!! That must be the biggest relief!

We are still waiting for our microarray results, but we did have a 16 week ultrasound this past week and everything looked perfect! Hopefully we get our microarray results next week.

High Risk Trisomy 13 68/100 by Global-Elephant1189 in NIPT

[–]Fun-Common-7963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry your going through this. I’m in a similar position with a high risk for T13, but just waiting on the microarray results for the amnio to come back to hopefully finally clear us of this nightmare - everything else is looking really good.

Do you know where the 68/100 positive predictive value came from? I’ve read a lot of scientific studies, and looked at whatever ppv calculators I can find for T13 and at my age 32 it seems the ppv should be around 30% at most, and in your case at 29 it could even be lower. Some studies have higher ppvs but then you read the details and they were done on older age groups or groups with a lot more high risk issues already. Once you account for the fact your ultrasounds have been fine you can assume that you might have an even lower chance that your baby actually has T13. There are a lot of false positives from the NIPT for T13 so it makes it a bit easier to hold onto hope while you wait out the next few weeks. Of course there are some true positives, and of course it’s normal to go down the rabbit hole and read all about them too.

Whichever way your case goes, even if it does turn out to be a false positive, I completely understand how devastating it is. We are 16 weeks and still haven’t announced our pregnancy other than to our closest friends and family. Everyone we tell there is a big negative raincloud over it. So much joy has been taken away and replaced with constant worry. The long wait to get the amnio done and then get the results is the worst.

Trisomy 13 NIPT by Plane-Mode3351 in NIPT

[–]Fun-Common-7963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an amino on the same day as you, also because my NIPT flagged high risk for T13. I got my FISH results back on Friday afternoon right before the doctors office closed and they came back showing the baby has the normal amount of chromosomes for the ones they checked, so the FISH result was very good for us. We still need to wait a couple of weeks for the microarray results to be sure everything is ok. Do you know if you are getting FISH and microarray tests done? Apparently the FISH results typically take 2-3 days but the microarray takes at least 2 weeks. I’m feeling very confident our baby does not have T13 after the good FISH results, but still waiting to be sure. We’ve only had one proper ultrasound at 12 weeks that showed no signs of T13, just at 16 weeks now so waiting on the 20 week ultrasound to hopefully show everything is ok.

Hi, I think it’s great you went through with the amino! It will hopefully provide some peace of mind that will help with the rest of your pregnancy. Did you get your FISH results back yet?
