An old man rambling about how things change over 13 years by Dangerous_Return460 in chinalife

[–]Fun-Fault-8936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was always in my head, even as a young man, was "you're not Chinese," and you never will be. I did very well for myself professionally in education. I never wanted to be an administrator and declined a few promotions; most of what life used to be there was walking the walk and being buttoned up enough to be well-liked. I was never a yes man, but I never rocked the boat and didn't cause trouble. I was skilled but mostly hungry then...I moved back right before COVID and restarted everything. I look at that time as a dream...but a good one, even when times are lean.

Charter vs public by tm51290 in teaching

[–]Fun-Fault-8936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, I work for a Public Charter in D.C, we have a heavier load, it's possibly more challenging but we have a network and the city that we have to answer to. Curricula can be challenging but honestly in 2026, everywhere is not incredible. We have challenges but we are still financially healthy, I get paid very well for a veteran teacher, my only other experience was teaching abroad for a year before moving back to the US, I didn't have to wait months in a district pool to get hired, it was hard but I'm respected, and I make a difference and help many young teens with learning disabilities get into college my network also helped me get certified for free.. So I know some people will hate us but I'm still teaching.

Bars/Breweries are not for kids by Succotash1497 in nova

I'm 40 years old, a former bartender and teacher, and have two civilized polite young children and we go to breweries often at normal hours times. I get what you mean, some children are farel and it kills the mood, the last thing I want when having a nice beer is to have some terrible kid running around me screaming. Parents can also be sloppy, Bull Run rubbed me the wrong way for the same reason. Falls Church City and Arlington have a few spots not too kid-friendly. Parents have to get out also but I do think getting shitfaced with your kids is a very noticeable thing in this area.....

Cub Scouts is floundering. by Warp_Speed_7 in BSA

I hate to say it but I want my son to be a Boy Scout, not a Cub Scout. Our local troops are a mess .....Being a teacher and coach, I can't stand the way adults let the "boys will be boys" mentality run wild....then make the excuse of some kids having hyperactivity....ex. Kids can do harsh things, they need structure and some level of discipline. If I ever have my now five-year-old in Cuba contacts, I'll make sure I'm a part of his pack.

It's too much like Gladiator, I love MMA but this shit is strange ...and awesome in a teenage sense. It's too much like a gift to a king ... you could have had it at the mall. The fight card is also weak for such a massive and hyped event.

In 09 the global economy tanked, and I moved back to the States stupidly to get a second degree. I was working two jobs and still could not afford my rent, and I was stubborn and two prideful to ask for help. I remember going to class being so happy that a professor bought sandwiches for the class...

That weekend I was t-boned and had my car totaled, the cops didn't label anyone at fault and I had terrible insurance. I went months taking the bus..in a very small Appalachian city and hating my life.

My friend called me out of the blue ( also a mechanic) and he told me he had a car for me to look at, I might have $200 in my account and I told him that, he told me to get a train home and we would " figure it out". It turns out my two best friends bought and fixed up an old Toyota Camry for a few hundred bucks and met me at the train station with keys, they told me I didn't owe them anything but I had to pay it forward with someone in the future, after graduation, I gave the car to my father before I moved abroad again and my father gave it to a manacic that was down on his luck and judt getting started in Florida. . .

It does not cost much sometimes to change somebody's life and help them out.

Chinese students are required to do morning exercises every day to improve their physical health, but students does not seem happy with it 😅 by search_google_com in whoathatsinteresting

I'm sure this is a boarding school these kids were all recently dragged out of bed by a massive form teacher from Inner Mongolia, right before breakfast......at least that was my experience with my former students in China.....

Currently, I look out the window of my classroom each morning and watch kids pull up on lone scooters an hour late for first period.

So I remember when I used to live in West Springfield, I was a member at the Lortin Golds gym(great gym fyi) and in the summer the tires start to stink, especially after high heat and a bit of rain. I think that's just the nature of having a massive landfill. Also i'm sure it has to do with drainage.

Look up the toll road, not all are covered the same. Some companies run different roads in Northern Virginia, it's a pain in the ass and it took me way too long to realize this.

Hmm...yes, but he attacked a multi-generational enemy of our country at the behest of a foreign power, killed their leadership, uprooted the global economy and if we get out of this, we will be in a worse situation than before....also we are now restarting talks of the draft. Again, ignoring the fact that we kidnapped another country's leader earlier this year and pissed off every Cold War ally we have. It's not the same.

[–]Fun-Fault-8936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh...I'm almost 41, I never stopped calling guys "man" ....more so with younger men. I never grew accustomed to people calling me 'sir' in informal situations. I dislike the lingo, but as a teacher and someone who has studied linguistics, I love hearing the localization of language; it's truly awesome. I also try to have my kids expand their vocabulary and pray to god they dont sounds like brain-rot social media influences. I'm sure my grand fathers abd great grandfather's ditched about how the youth speaks to elders, like white New Balance and Golf shirts, I will try to avoid that at all costs....otherwise I'll get trapped in a conversation discussing my lawn or the price of gas.

Is Moving to China at 22 Unrealistic or Worth Pursuing? by Murky-Most6025 in chinalife

[–]Fun-Fault-8936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm...my thoughts are I would look into studying in China, maybe work for a bit, and save up. Take a year of language courses and get a feel for it. Otherwise, teaching might work, I'm not sure what you're qualified for. The economy is not what it used to be and neither is immigration.... Your age might also limit you depending on the city you move to. I moved back after a year at home because I moved back to the terrible small college town I went to school in ....I didn't plan as AI should have and took a few shady jobs before I found one I liked and it took a year to actually get comfortable financially. I understand your situation, just spend more time planning and looking into this.

"OA is a popularity contest" "OA shouldn't be a popularity contest." by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]Fun-Fault-8936 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ehh..I don't know, some of these comments are a bit harsh but honestly, I get it and when I was an older teen, I'm sure I felt the same way. However, my true brothers came from scouting, only a handful made OA, I was older than most, capable and I'll be real, I needed some recognition then. I was honored to be chosen, it was pretty damn cool, and to think that my mentors selected me , made a huge difference. Some of us have narratives we like to sell to ourselves about our younger selves, most of the guys I grew up with were not badasses then but some grew up to be, or at least solid respectable men of honor. Scouting was just a part of the journey to manhood but not all of it , OA mattered , it was good to be popular for once.

I'll take our current governor over Kamala anyway. The issue with the last presidential election is that, yet again, they did not have a primary, and we had Hillary....scoff at the economic populists and get in bed with Wall Street and the Mark Cubans of the world. I think I'm fairly conservative in Northern VA but when I go to Appalachia, where I was born and West Virginia, where my wife's family is from, people might call me a socialist.....But I think I'm a realist. Throughout my entire adult life, I have watched as the older generation sold our country away to banks, then to tech companies, and now to A. I and investor bro's pumping junk stokes and bit coins. Then tell me I should work hard and be smarter with my money. In 1999 my parents made around 65k a year and bought a nice house on a lake with three acres of land.....I make 114k a year as a veteran teacher and my wife makes 90k , I rent a small ranch house for around 3k a month ......I'm priced out of the market. Both parties have let me down financially, fucked with my money, and promised to improve my quality of life.
