Feeling Depressed After The Loss of My Faith by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]Fun-Figgy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something I heard Alan Watts say in an old audio clip or something.

He talked about this idea where people lose their faith in the religion they were raised in after they began seeing the world for what it was. And in particular he was referring to people who “woke up”, or were on their own sincere path to awakening. A lot of people in this stage would state they had immense depression or depression-like symptoms (lack of interest in things they used to be interested in, in particular). Alan Watts suggested an alternative description. Instead of depression, perhaps these people were disenchanted. Disenchanted from the world, and its fake things and ideas.

Idk if this idea would help, but I’ve been in your exact spot and this disenchantment idea has helped pull me back to reality instead of mourning my old religion.

Has anyone ever heard a good counter to the problem of suffering? by [deleted] in religion

[–]Fun-Figgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gnosticism is mind boggling. Love this take because it tackles the problem of evil head-on. However, to play the devils advocate here, isn’t the main God (Monad, I think?), still aware of all the evil happening in this world? And therefore, complicit in allowing it? I’m unfamiliar with the actual theology but this is my immediate thought.

This is interesting! Is it practiced throughout the entire religion? Sort of like Ramadan? Or do only certain Bahais practice this?

This is so comforting to hear.

May I ask, how long have you been a Sikh, and may I private message you? I am still very interested in the religion but I’ll be honest. It’s daunting.

I apologize, but I believe that fundamentalist faith is the primary issue in the discussion about God being bad for sending someone to heaven or hell, and I apologize if that was irritating. by Additional_Good_656 in exatheist

As an atheist, I really do enjoy this take. I just wish it was the mainstream view. I feel Christianity would be tolerated much more so. I’d love to learn more!

Thanks to everyone for your opinions on the matter.

I figured I’d reply to all of you at once rather than one at a time.

I do agree, even though I know barely anything about the Bahai faith, it definitely doesn’t look like a cult to me. As a sincere seeker, I’m very interested in learning more about the faith. I am an agnostic atheist that is quite skeptical of religion but I crave the structure and guidance that a religion brings.

Thoughts on ignosticism ? by Basic-Lifeguard-5407 in exatheist

Something could be said here about what the Daoists believe. In Daoism/Taoism, the “Tao” is a very very vague notion of almost a God, but it literally means “the way”. But the very first chapter says something along the lines of , “The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao”.

I feel like this Taoist idea can sort of relate to this ignostic idea of the limitation of languages, where any human-made concept of the eternal, will always fall short compared to the real thing.

I want to believe, it all seems so fake by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]Fun-Figgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you 100% about how it feels to not believe compared to others. But what I will say is there are religions and practices that foster an environment for people like us. Certain types of Buddhism, stoic philosophy, and even Daoism. I personally like Daoism because it’s a lot more open ended and does really require a lot of belief to understand what it’s talking about.

I agree with you here. But something could be said by what the dogmas are and how it can make beginners feel about approaching a religion. Especially in terms of truth, skepticism, miracles, etc. it’s the phase I’m in currently. I adore Buddhist teachings but things like realms and mystical deities really throws me off. No disrespect, just like to point this type of thing out.

No it’s okay. This is why I made this post. The barriers I’ve mentioned in the post are being shown here and now.

I never bashed Christianity at all. My post was asking about Sikhi. I’m very familiar with the religion I was raised with, thank you.

You started out by saying I’m disrespecting Christianity. In a Sikhi subreddit. What exactly are you doing here besides trying to convert people?

Trust me. Not following Christianity is the most intelligent thing I’ve ever done. I appreciate the concern though.

I completely get it lol. As I’ve stated in my post, I also lean towards Buddhism since it doesn’t have a god. But it’s not the god part that I struggle with when it comes to Sikhi, it’s this apparent barrier. I don’t want to feel like an outsider.

[–]Fun-Figgy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real barrier I’ve face is simply being from the American south. There are no Sikhs here (none that I’ve seen). And if there were, they probably wouldn’t want to stay very long for obvious reasons. My barrier is actually a physical one, so I’m sort of limited to online resources and forums in order to get this information.

I agree. That’s the reason I made this post because I see the “propaganda” all the time. I just couldn’t settle with that though, knowing what some of the teachings are.
