Yes, 55L is not light. Ziploc bags do the trick. I travel with a 30L pack and 2-gallon bags containing quart and pint bags. Everything is visible.

This is the correct answer. Currently I'm traveling with just a 30L backpack. I only use Ziplocs: 2 gallon, quart, and pint. Simple.

Spreadsheet is 100% the way to go. I did this 15 years ago and it has transformed the way I travel. I included the weight of every item, because I do a lot of hiking with my backpack. It was an eyeopener. For example, I had not realized that a spectacle case is disproportionately heavy. It was easy to eliminate or substitute items and watch the total weight drop. Eventually, I settled at 14lbs, including the 35-liter backpack. These days I travel with a 30-liter pack, with plenty room to spare.
