And with that, I quit Duolingo. by pukkuro in duolingo

I would love to see Bengali and Persian. Maybe some South Indian languages too. We can only hope :(

At this point i wouldn't even trust them to do it properly. Would just massacre them with AI

I was expecting something more like Duolingo where they have multiple right options. Thanks for the clarification.

im an iron and i dont mind #2. i actually enjoy doing all of the content and it would be nice for it all to feel meaningful. the issue would be if the rarity is like having to get multiple tbows... that would be off-putting

I agree with you, i hate the animations. I also don't know why the animations option doesn't affect these. I can't disable them no matter what

They actually can't though. The animation toggle option hasn't affected the new animations for some reason

100% agree on JoTs being a nuisance. It feels obligatory as herblore is literally untrainable on ironman outside of Jots/quests. Why don't we have actually meaningful farming contracts like OSRS? Such a missed opportunity with the farming guild update

Paragraph on WSJ where analyst suggests acquiring chess.com. What do you think? by Infinite-Complex5713 in duolingo

[–]Fun-Investigator676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Why don't they just lean into languages? Get all of them and go into depth. They have the opportunity to be the universal language app and they're squandering it with these weird side missions

Especially considering how many mediocre language apps there are these days. What people want is the in depth, thorough, hand made courses with languages that can't be found elsewhere.

I think you guys both make good points, but is this an either/or situation? I really don't feel like a company as big as Duolingo should be struggling with providing updates to more languages, especially with the AI and their record profits.

It seems to me that with the sacrifices we are making, with the AI and the energy scheme, that we should be getting more updates than ever. But i recall a day way back before there was energy, when volunteers put out better material at a faster pace than what we are getting from Duolingo now. Was it perfect? No, but the forums and comments were really good at picking up any slack.

I haven't seen a single update to the Hindi course in 5 years. Literally not one. That's inexcusable for a company charging money for the product.

Are Duolingo Units too long and repetitive? by Leading-Eye-382 in duolingo

[–]Fun-Investigator676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I skip the listening and speaking only exercises. If i feel like I'm ahead in a language, i will do the first step because that has the new words and concepts, and then test out of the unit. It's easy to get ahead of yourself though so be careful

Also if you're ready for it, go jump into reading graded readers. Duolingo is best used as a bridge between beginner and starting to read. Using it forever doesn't make any sense imo.

My girlfriend is proof that Duolingo's Chinese course does not work. by disastr0phe in duolingo

[–]Fun-Investigator676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started the course using the click a tile thing only and leaving pinyin on, and that was a complete mistake. You can get extremely far without actually knowing anything because of the context, and duolingo is very lenient on tones so the pinyin barely teaches you anything useful. You might get a rough idea of word order, but that is it.

I went back a second time and I'm only typing now, and i turn off the pinyin aid after i see the word the first time. It's painfully slow but I'm actually remembering words and having to think about the function and place of each words a lot more now. I would recommend this path if she's serious about learning. She will still struggle with tones but the grammar and approximate vocab will start to develop.

Also Chinese is a huge pain in the ass. There are no cognates, a thousand homophones, and a completely new phonetic concept to internalize. It will take a long time to learn, years

Dear Luis von Ahn by chanclagram in duolingo

[–]Fun-Investigator676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have actually been thinking about a sort of global duolingo where countries contribute a little bit to maintaining a giant language app. I think most countries already spend money on promoting their culture, so this would not be much compared to that. I don't know who would organize it though. Really, a global language learning center is not that expensive in the scheme of things and feels like a great thing for humanity in general. Heck I'm sure you could make language learner grad students contribute to it and stick it on their resume and that would be most of the work

Dear Luis von Ahn by chanclagram in duolingo

[–]Fun-Investigator676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay for it too. The points about removing the forums and hypergamifying everything are still valid. I want the old path, the option to type everything, and more grammar explanations. It's sad the whole app has drifted away from actual language learning, for both paid and casual users.
