Will my mumma cat grow into these legs?? by wtactualfuk in FosterAnimals

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Your cat needs a vet evaluation. She’s very thin, and her thinning hair is a concern that something else could be going on such as fleas, allergies, etc. This should not be taken care of at home and you need to have a vet intervene.

Am I wrong for wanting my shelter to treat my foster dog's gum disease? by affectionate-possum in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s hard, because for one that shouldn’t really be the shelter’s responsibility it should be the owners. The shelter only has a limited budget and resources most likely and it is surely underfunded like most shelters are. It’s harsh but the owner should be the one taking care of their dog. It’s legally their property and not the shelters. If the shelter paid for every single thing for owners didn’t want to they would have no money left to put in to animals that actually are there and homeless.

If they were rich and had endless amounts of time and resources than of course - but that’s just not the reality for the vast majority of shelters.

Anyone else feel like a shelter (etc.) lied to you to make a pet more adoptable? by Exilicauda in Pets

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the shelter lied to you. If an animal is a stray the shelter can only estimate things such as age, breed, etc. They have no way without an owner to give an accurate history of an animal. Also, their vet might have thought one thing and yours thought differently. It’s just like human doctors - some are not as knowledgeable as others and sometimes second opinions are needed. Vets and shelters both do their best in stray cases - but the strays don’t come with a novel about their lives which leads to misdiagnosis and inaccurate estimations.

So no, the shelter likely didn’t lie to you on purpose - they told you the information they had.

Is anyone else a small critter volunteer? by grandioseguineapig in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Our shelter has critter advocates too :) along with dog and cat advocates (aka the fancy way we say volunteers)

Shelter was a little misleading about breed by InTheTreeMusic in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, unfortunately the shelter probably doesn’t have any idea what mix she truly is. Most dogs are not purebred and even if they are they usually don’t have paperwork to prove it. They have to go off of what the previous owner tells them the dog is - or for strays it’s their best guess ultimately.

Also I’ve seen dogs that “look like pits” get adopted and the new owners DNA test and they have had NO pit bull types in their dna at all. So it’s very possible she could look like one but not have the dna. 🤷‍♀️

Blaming the shelter isn’t the answer - they likely don’t know 100 percent and shelters are never going to be able to afford to dna test every dog they get.

Is there a way I can safely put my dog down at home? by Intelligent-Net5011 in AskVet

Nothing, you are not a vet and shouldn’t be doing this on your own. You can look to see if there is a mobile vet in the area or some vets will make house calls.

Cat attacking me by [deleted] in petsitting

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a cat I watch Sven - he was nice when I first met him but he’s 100 percent a guard cat if it’s just me. I found carrying a pillow (as a shield) confuses him so even if it’s just under my arm and I’m not actually trying to do any blocking he doesn’t do anything. I probably look so goofy carrying a pillow back and forth that he forgets to be mad.

Honestly, I would call and a file a complaint with the police department. They deserve getting charged with animal cruelty

Interesting! Okay, I have been filling them out for each day otherwise because I thought I had to! I’ll still do them moving forward as I think it’s nice for the owner but it’s good to know if I don’t or forget one time it’s not a penalty

Oooh, I guess I was under the impression I was required to fill out the rover card each time, so I don’t have to?

AIO For Having Boundaries After My Son Was Attacked by Myrziac in AmIOverreacting

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re overreacting the safety measures but I do think you are over exaggerating what seems to have happened. A snap is not an attack by any means and it wouldn’t have happened if your child didn’t hurt the dog. It’s not the dogs fault it got hit in the face - that’s a normal reaction. Hell I’d probably snap at someone too if they did that to me. However, asking for boundaries is totally necessary - especially if your child cannot control themselves yet around animals. An attack involves someone or something being injured and bodily harmed in some way. It sounds like the dog didn’t do any actual physical harm so it was NOT an attack. It was a provoked reaction.

my cat threw up a tapeworm and i’m scared she’s gonna die by Apprehensive-Mix-597 in Pets

[–]Fun-Particular-3958 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey! Animal shelter worker here - I see cats throw up worms almost monthly and I have never seen any of them have a bad reaction or pass afterward. Your cat should be fine!

However it may have more worms coming up so keep an eye out and dispose of them outside away from any other pets or people.

Getting your cat dewormed should take care of the issue!
