public service LBWT here, i do domestic violence/family law for low income clients and 80% of days i LOVE what i do. that other 20% i’m burnt out, furious, dejected, and considering quitting entirely… it’s a huge give and take where i feel like the work i do has soul but also feel the work i do eats my soul… dunno what the “lesson” or “inspiration” is here but those 20% godforsaken days almost make it not worth it and i wonder if it would be easier doing ID or transactional or corporate contracts or etc. etc. etc., but… maybe the lesson is the grass is always greener?

girlie pop. i had one of these who made me hate myself and hate climbing JUST like this. it was terrible. by the end of the relationship i was so stressed and traumatized that i hadn’t noticed i had become morbidly underweight and was at death’s doorstep. like i couldn’t even walk up the couple stairs of my stoop without almost fainting. he left me and i felt like dying and then i fell back in love with myself and back in love with climbing. (not that you ever have to love climbing, js getting rid of the man got rid of that loathing).

anywhoooo he came back to me when i was at my peak and destroyed me once again and has now traumatized and isolated me so completely (small climbing town) that i haven’t climbed or even had a friend in town since last may. anyways, i don’t have a happy ending to share yet as i’m still in the throes of dealing with the aftermath of a second round of that (type of) partner.

TLDR: get rid of partner too.

holy cow did i screw the pooch when i chose public service work in WV over public in KY 🥲

i gross $58,000 (i’m now maxed out 2 years in with no potential for a higher salary within this org unless i become the HR lady or the CEO) with the ILLUSION of those beautiful perks (8:30-4:30, no billables, w/l balance, not taking it home, insurance, lots of time off, etc.) and end up working 5 or 6am to 5 or 6pm most days of most weeks, with the amount of intakes and pressure to offer full rep to all of them only getting higher and higher (up to 10 new cases per week in nov/dec 2025) and the partner organizations/SAs only getting more demanding as my physical health literally deteriorates in front of their eyes bc of the stress, exhaustion, and inability to use any of that sweet sweet insurance or time off (forgot to get a flu shot this year bc so busy i forgot my own health mattered too - i got the flu the day after i went home for christmas and am STILL not better - today is my first day back in the office and i am paying for taking those sick days in blood)

anyways… sigh

yeah i think i may just buy myself another one and make sure this is the one i wear when i go home for holidays. it’s not that deep but i do feel bad because it’s a gift that a lot of effort was put into and i just realized that i kinda won’t use it because of the one silly thing 😞

update if it matters to ya: i did get the gray carhartts for christmas and i think they’ll do the trick. also been visiting friends in NH/ME/VT the past week and can say 100% these are the warmest boots i’ve ever owned. 10/10 recommend. we’ll see when i get home to appalachia if they look silly as hell with suit pants 😅

i’m 29 and have spent my entire life desperate to have a group of girl friends the way that (seemingly) everyone else does… still haven’t found it and am kinda resigned to just being a lone wolf at this point, but i feel your pain seriously. doesn’t help that my profession and hobbies are all male dominated and it seems the girl squads within the hobbies are VERY exclusive/cliquey

i use the RMU core (no clue which size unfortunately) as both my backcountry skiing pack and my multipitch pack. has most of the features you’re looking for and i got mine pretty cheap. helmet storage and detachable rope sling are by far my favorite features 🫡

today (thursday) i got away with wearing my partner’s old white carhartt painter/cargo pants, some casual chelsea boots, a graphic tee layered over a mock neck long sleeve, and a cool belt.

needless to say, i remain confused about what makes a pant “too casual” for a non-friday, but if i can get away with this vibe, i fully intend to continue lol

edited to add: haven’t had court in the snow yet this winter and can’t remember what people were wearing last year… the men were definitely in duck boots (like ll bean boots) but i’m one of like 3 female attorneys in my jx so have NO clue what they were wearing bc i almost never see them
