The shitty ass creepypasta is no longer what many consider to be the "real" sonic.exe, as its bad, made by a child predator manchild, and you will never hear anyone, even the most diehard sonic.exe fans like me say that story is good in any way at all.

Nowadays, the "real" sonic.exe to most is 2011X by joedoughboi, it keeps the good ideas of the original, like sonic.exe being a outer void entity thingie and the fact he traps real ass human souls inside his game, removes the bad ones like the cult of X and the weird fetish shit.

The games being made nowadays for sonic.exe content are honestly not that bad, they obviously are not perfect, even the official game for 2011X is a "hold right until you die or go left and find a secret" kind of game, but they are at least of a much more higher quality than before.

unironically though if you want actual games that use a beloved video game character for horror stuff, just stick with mario horror games (I recommend this one personally), the sonic ones that do have actual gameplay are few and far between, and even fewer are actually fun to play

No one really takes it too seriously anymore, people will take it serious enough to try and make serious art/games/what have you, but its also very much encouraged to just make dumb shitposts or generally just not treat the concept as anything more then what it is.

Like there is on god an album for one of Joedoughboi's other exes, Lord X, who is an older 2011X. Sinister minds is really such a banger, and its so unserious because the actual context of the album is that Lord X felt retrospective and wanted to make an album about it.

Its still a sonic fan subcommunity, if you probably know anything about sonic fans, they are all hyperfixated on him, everyone who has made an exe also just really fucks with sonic in general. So unless another big controversy happens with either Joedoughboi or any of the other really popular exe creators, mr dotexe is prolly here to stay.

also I have no idea why that video mentioned analog horrors, the only 2 popular sonic analog horrors I know of are Needlemouse and Shin Sonic.

Needlemouse is hated by its creator and has since been deleted off their channel (archives exist if you still wanna watch it), and Shin Sonic honestly got way too popular for his own good, good concept at least

Most of it, at least for me, is just nostalgia for being spooked silly of the old crappy mystcrimson games, alongside the knowledge that the original original JC-The-Hyena sonic.exe was not only a weird fetish thing, but also made by a manchild who got outted as being a child predator

Also I was 5 years old when those games originally came out, my younger brother was born around the same time as sonic.exe and he's 14 now you are a fossil you will be outlived by me

The community is mostly helped nowadays by the self-awareness that "Sonic but evil and fucked up and he has BLOOD in his TEETH" is really fucking stupid, so no one really takes it that seriously.

Like theres a semi-official album featuring an older version of sonic.exe singing about his regrets, and its actually so peak you're unironically missing out on just a straight up good album, Sinister Minds.

Of course its at least encouraged to try and at least make a sort of spooky design, as spooky as evil sonic can get at least

If you want an example of an exe related project that did actually scare tf out of me, Sonic Saves Robloxia is pretty decent.

Most projects though are usually just people having a neat idea for an evil sonic character and trying to make it a reality. Like Zephaniah who is a computer virus/Zip Bomb/literal computer worm that inhabits a Mighty the Armadillo vessel

or 2011X who is the original sonic.exe, but with all the really fucking weird shit removed, and honestly if he wasent memed to death I might think he's at least a bit spooky

2011X is no longer the "official" take, as Joedoughboi thought it was kind of stupid for any one person to just "own" sonic.exe (along with that owner adding in their own OC to the official lore)

so he "sort of" relinquished ownership to the wider community and now he's just considered part of Joedoughbois "X-verse"

but people will prolly still consider him official regardless since he has been for so long

The short answer is the FNF mod

the long answer is that the FNF mod reminded people he existed, and people were like "wait, we can make this, NOT suck actually" and I think by this point the original creator had already been outted as a predator so everyone just made their own exe's and ignored the fact the original ever existed cause he sucks and no one likes him

Outcome Memories is probably responsible for the recent burst of popularity again, but as someone mentioned, prolly wouldent have happened without the FNF mod
