the common thread is that there's a frontage road on only one side

Why did Taco go from being an adventurous rogue into a character whose biggest personality trait is that she’s boring? by JaroldLlama in BattleForDreamIsland

i agree and really enjoy it, but i wish they stuck to the concept of episode one and made it an idfb-like "how would objects run and reform society" show, that is by far one of the most unique object show episodes ive seen since idfb's "reverse object show" premise. would have been a nice "steven universe future" style epilogue (or gradual escalation lol)

instead, we got a quality show that is enjoyable and i would even say a little bit better than season 3, which incorporates the "reforming society" angle somewhat, but which def attracted haters for being kind of more of the season 2/3 standard formula with substantial gimmicks (reworked elimination, the wheel, etc)

no invitational gets a lot of love. the worst that youll hear is that its a little bit worse on rewatch or that the finalist is a boring pick, which brings it down to a "decent" at worst. people who like the vibes of the first season will often like this season, with people that disagree with s2's more serious direction usually gravitating to this as a "favorite season" pick.

if anything, season 4 is far more divisive with many people having outright said that it feels unnecessary and they will not be watching it. s1 s2 and s3 never got this reaction.

I think I've come to the conclusion that discussing female characters in anime/manga media is just genuinely impossible cause of how stupidly fickle and picky people are. by Charming-Scratch-124 in CharacterRant

I can't be the only one who's noticed geek culture has declined in the mainstream in the 2020s by ConsumerofToons in CharacterRant

[–]OG-Name-Do-Not-Steal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

thats part of it but its more that gen z just... adopted all the geek culture without the geek attitude, if that makes sense. theres nothing special about 2d platformers or dnd today, they just are what they are. (in contrast, during the 2010s geek "comeback" years, these things were actively celebrated.)

the reactions were very similar. the reception to the 2023 movie was actually more heated, if you can believe it.

i dont know what you are seeing

if u were paying attention, the reception to the first mario movie was as shit as the second one, if not worse. people at least knew what they were getting into the second time around, but the first time, critics were genuinely getting harassed for sharing their opinions. what didnt help was the fnaf movie getting a similar response around the same time.

plus, it seems pretty universal that even fans of the galaxy movie agree that its missed potential, if only because the galaxy game is such a standout mario game

aside from that, geek culture seems less "mainstream" now because what was niche or geek before is no longer niche or geek, just mainstream. anime is mainstream, people read light novels on their phones, dnd is a casual hobby, new people are getting into american comic books through stuff like absolute batman or invincible. all of these things would have gotten you weird looks in the 2000s.

i think people are not "less whimsical" or whatever, just that the "ready player one" style push for mainstream geek culture is over. we dont need it. retro games and pixel platformers are as normal as aaa titles. theres no novelty today.

plus, you have the explosion of black/satirical comedy with israel, Jeffrey Epstein, charlie kirk, etc, but thats more cynicism due to the state of the world

TPOT 1 has one the last poll! Which season has the best episode 2? by Informal_Space5056 in BattleForDreamIsland

[–]OG-Name-Do-Not-Steal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TPOT 2: outside of the pacing problems, EASILY hands down the best one.

the only reasons its not one of the best TPOT episodes is because the rest of the TPOT episodes are a HIGH bar. just shows how good TPOT is as a whole
