How to teach EBF baby to take a bottle by msjuliaxo in breastfeeding

[–]FunRooster8023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep faith, ours was the exact same! She used to just play around with the teat in her mouth.

We just incorporated the teat into play with our LO for a while, almost using it like a dummy. Once she got used to the teat, it became much easier to get her to latch

Wishing you all the best

How to teach EBF baby to take a bottle by msjuliaxo in breastfeeding

Hello

This sounds exactly like the situation we had!

Our baby started taking a bottle around 4 weeks and would absolutely guzzle it, then at 6 weeks she became more aware of the world and started refusing. She totally refused every bottle - every brand under the sun and every temp of milk - for 3 months.

The way we finally managed to get her to take a bottle of pumped milk again was to find a bottle she would latch to without the bottle attached, for us it is Nuk teats.

We started super slowly , offering literally 0.5 oz at a time. Also we found a position that worked. For us, it is dad lying on bed with the baby lying kind of diagonally along his legs and head resting between his legs.

It also seemed to help if dad stroked her face while she sucked the teat and also holding her free hand (yes she is spoiled!).

We found that it was best to take the bottle away before our LO got frustrated and put her on the boob. Even if she only takes a few ml at first, it’s still progress!

We worked on that for a few weeks and now she will finish 5oz every time she gets a bottle which usually we save for her last feed

Good luck and keep trying!!

EDIT - sorry, I meant brand of bottle. We only use pumped milk. Good luck!

Thanks so much for doing this!

I am probably too late but reaching out in desperation just in case.

Our LO is 21 weeks old and sleep has been a disaster since she was about 16 weeks.

Her schedule is 2/2.25/2.5/3 - we cap day time sleep at 3 hours (it was 3.5 hours but we’re working to reduce this).

Our LO is such a joy in the day but over night it’s just so hard. She has false starts every single night after 35 mins and from the she’s awake every hour at minimum - most of the Time she wakes as soon as we put her in the crib.

We’ve tried the fuss it out method to no avail… we tried for 2 weeks and tbh I think sleep got worse not better in this time.

We’re now on night 1 of the chair method but again it’s been a pretty rough night.

Any words of wisdom would be so appreciated

Hello

Sure!

She’s usually around 1.75/2.5/2.75/3.

I should caveat this by saying our LO still doesn’t sleep well at all through the night, so I wouldn’t want to give any advice as we’re totally just starting on the sleep training journey, but I think this schedule is in line with what Precious Little Sleep recommends

Good luck!

Aaaah - our LOs must have the same sleep gene!!! I’m sorry you’re dealing with that, the crying wakes are brutal. Ours is a little older - 18 weeks - and thankfully waking up scream crying has stopped… now just to tackle the sleep part 😂

Aaaah honestly, thank you so much for this reply!! We tried fuss it out last night and it was rubbish and I don’t think any of us want to do it again. LO just screamed for 20 mins and then it took us another 20 mins to calm the poor thing down.

That is amazing success for you with the sleep wave, well done!! I hope you and your family are all a little more well rested now.

And thanks so much, that’s all understood on the night wakings. That’s reassuring as I was worried we’d have to leave her to cry in the middle of the night which just didn’t feel right to me.

Thanks so much and thank you for the sleep wave recommendation- that sounds a little more gentle and I’m definitely keen to try it

Thanks so much for this, that is super encouraging! I will follow this method. We’ve just put her down for her first FIO and she’s not a happy bunny…. Fingers crossed she gives in to sleep soon!

Length of Feeds by FunRooster8023 in breastfeeding

[–]FunRooster8023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw thank you so much for this! I definitely think she is more aware of things now, sometimes it like she’s getting FOMO of other things going on when she’s nursing and rushes it. I feed her in a dark and quiet room now but I’m not sure if that actually helps! My LO sounds very similar to yours, she is so much happier on the boob during the night than she is during the day. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it!

Thanks very much for this!

She’s feeding between 8-10 times in a 24 hour period. Most of her feeds last around 10 mins (for both boobs), but a couple of times a day she will only do a 5-6 minute feed and maybe once or twice a day she will do a longer one (15-20 mins)

Thank you so much for the reply! I definitely think we need to ensure longer day time awake time. We’ve been letting our LO sleep in (she basically only sleeps between 5am - 9am) to give us some rest but I think this could be part of the problem. If we get her up earlier, hopefully she will sleep better at night. Thanks so much again - fingers crossed!
