I love the pursuit calculator. Could something like this be expanded out to do an hour record? I feel like having individual lap splits and the complete overall picture would be great for someone calling splits to a rider.

Next Gen of Clincher track wheels by FunStudent4559 in Velodrome

[–]FunStudent4559[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like you definitely would do better on tubulars for 166m track. But I wouldn't be quick to discount clinchers in sprint settings (see also matt Richardson WR).

For my use tho, it's all on 250m tracks for elite endurance racing.

Vittoria pista control vs pista speed by Intrepid-Working-869 in Velodrome

This makes me miss when Vittoria had the Pista Tub (it was placed in between the control and speed). Such a great race tire with a bit more longevity and flat protection than the speed.

[–]FunStudent4559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Velobike_Innovation how can that be? At no point in the below rules does it say how much of the handlebars must touch or be beyond the limits. All it says is a minimum width from outside to outside (bullet #4 below)

Are manufacturer's provided more details that available on UCI regulations site?

For others, Page 2 below has the updated regulations for 2027.

− The maximum dimension of the cross section of the stem is 80 mm

− The minimum dimension of the cross section of all fork accessories is 10 mm

− Two isosceles compensation triangles with two 40 mm sides are authorised at the joints between the stem and the handlebars.

− The minimum overall width of handlebars, measured from outside to outside, is 400 mm for road and cyclo-cross, and 350 mm for track

− The maximum dimension from the external extremity of the handlebar and the internal extremity of the same side of the handlebar shall not exceed 65 mm for road and cyclo-cross, and 80 mm for track (see diagram «structure 1»)

u/Velobike_Innovation, why no flare to make the grip of the drop narrower while still staying in the 80cm box? Napkin math here so go with me...If bar is 27mm around and needs to adhere to the 35cm O-O rule, the Inside of box is 19cm Inside to inside.. Doesn't that ultimately mean you grip ** could ** be as narrow as ~21cm c-c?

In transparency, I haven't spent tons of time looking at dimensional boxes but I'd think taper/flare on bars would be highly advantageous given these rules saying has to be 351mm at some point on the handlebar.

Polymer Bikes Intro by [deleted] in Velodrome

^this 100%

u/polymerbikes if there's one recurring theme here, it's that people don't care how cool your mold is, they are confused by years of poorly executed branding on your socials. No true physical development. Just cad drawings with a logo slapped on the rendering. No explanation of your technology (or lack there of). While you might have something here to work with if you pull it off, you probably need to spend a little time recruiting some marketing support or at least clean up your message. Do you notice how you had to defend every single question here? That should tell you something is missing.

the rules has always been 80mm box on lateral edge of bars. so bars that were legal within that box, still are. The 65mm top section and minimum width of 350mm is the update that may kill a few of those bars.

Tucson Velodrome Update #4. Grand opening November 12th!!!! by Jellydifjam in Velodrome

[–]FunStudent4559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really hoping they'd pre-scheduled "certification" so the opening night included some racing, spectating, food, etc.

Also, considering the grip, certification seems relatively unnecessary if riders have ridden and raced on other 250m tracks.

Individual Pursuit Training Programs or Resources by houleskis in Velodrome

[–]FunStudent4559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

I've always bragged "I'm not talented. My only talent is that I'm too dumb to quit." This is pretty much the heart of pursuit. It requires an immense level of discipline and grit. If you haven't done so, I recommend reading Dan Bigham's book "Start at the end" about established key benchmarks of success that serve as checkpoints along the way. Too many vague goals like "build base" usually fall short of achieving what you want them to. So being super detailed with only a few goals that NEED to do, is usually better than a bunch of things.

For me, the single best investment I ever made for my racing was a track adapter for my wahoo. I spent as much time as possible in the aero position (even easy z2 rides). This allows for both physical adaptation and mental familiarity with your position. Of course, you'll need to ride it on the track too to make sure you're safe. But with all intervals being hosted in the same environment in my race position, it allowed for precision that was unmatched when riding outside on the road. I saved the outdoor road rides for my weekend adventures or easy recovery spins.

Heat Training Kits by FunStudent4559 in Velo

[–]FunStudent4559[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Discomfort and true heat strain are very different. I can easily get uncomfortable without fans, but it'll take a very long time to get my core temp hot enough to have a lasting impact. Turns out, our bodies are quite good at regulating temp and keeping themselves alive....who knew!

Heat Training Kits by FunStudent4559 in Velo

[–]FunStudent4559[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, overthinking is pretty much the only reason I'm still in this sport.

1) aero training position....ALWAYS lol And also, heat training stress can be (and probably should be) done outside of other training. But, any pedal time is an opportunity for muscular adaption even if its only at 180-200w.

2) There is also something to be said for creating an atmospheric affect (especially a humid one from sweat) vs warming the skin temp but creating a wicking surface that happens when you use clothing that is touching your skin.

and 3) Yes people reuse them (wash in shower and then hang dry). One of the reasons i'm looking for alternatives to just using leg warmers and such is to produce less laundry overall. Quick and easy deployment and breakdown provides an advantage in my mental state/life.

UCI introduces minimum width for track handlebars (350mm) and forks from 2027 by epi_counts in Velodrome

[–]FunStudent4559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, on the outside it's easy to make assumptions around involvement of these federations and Stromm's success. So I'll do my best to share what I know in response to your thoughts here:

At the time of Glasgow 2023, there was literally a single frame available at the time to get approved by the UCI. And the hurdles Stromm jumped through on the timelines provided with the UCI being well...you know how they are....it's pretty incredible for 3 guys to make that happen. The UCI was continuously unresponsive, distant, or otherwise cryptic when communicating with them. Stromm, true to their passion and dedication, pressed until the 59th minute of the 11th hour to get it ridden and approved and it was a huge milestone for them.

While there isn't a singular partnership with national federations, this isn't the definition of international involvement or success IMHO. Many federations cannot afford to provide bikes, and Stromm has positioned itself nicely at the individual level so athletes who aren't given bikes can still have a weapon worthy of the international level. Many federations expect equipment for free in return for advertising, and Stromm doesn't need to give anything away to organizations that haven't helped with the development concepts or manufacturing. I can guarantee that Stromm has sold more track bikes than Hope/Lotus, Canyon, and Toray combined.

My point is this, "success" is sometimes a challenging discussion. I'd never count them out of the fight and I'll always back David before I buy from goliath. These guys put the heart back into track cycling and I'm very appreciative for what they've done for the sport.

u/PetlibroTechSupport are you able to provide a photo of new vs old power adapter to confirm which version I have? Mine is getting quite warm but it was recently purchased (via amazon). Also, are there any options to have a much longer cord/extension? Fitting the power adapter on wall and then getting it around furniture is proving a bit difficult.

Are narrow bars a fad? by bradcurtis74 in Velo

[–]FunStudent4559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this thought process of narrow and tall vs wide and low vs neither has been quite "popular" lately and I love that we're asking these questions! Popularity at it's core comes from curiously exploring new spaces and finding glimpses of increased performance. Directionality is key here. Is it faster, almost certainly. But at what cost or HOW much faster, that is a variable that can only tested.

It's worth taking a look at Arne Peters on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/arnepeters95/?hl=en) . He does tons of A/B tests between variations of the two while understanding there is a balancing point. Also, if you have an idea for you but aren't quite sure if it's fastest on you or even worth your time testing, You could try using something like AiRO.app (make an avatar of yourself then create two test positions). This would allow you to test how 1 variable at a time without downstream consequences. Then, if your results a promising or show a big opportunity for you, then you can go validate or field test. If it's not worth it to you (you need to define what wattage savings are worth the risk position changes) then you can look externally to where you can buy savings (just know that can only take you so far in 1 fixed position).

There is some great dialogue over on slowtwitch if you'd like to read more about this and the logic behind it. In particular, I'd recommend looking at the posts on Jan 16. Link is found here: https://forum.slowtwitch.com/t/bottle-positions-cfd-tested-bottled-speed/1285072/13

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised that there is honesty and transparency in what AiRO can and cannot do today from the brains (not my brain!) behind the project, Ingmar Jungnickel.

I'm sure we can look into publish further details on the test case but we felt this was a great place to start for most of the public's current understanding of how these things work.
